Default The NEW Definitive AC Bonus Thread

Definitive AC Update: October 6th, 2009

General Notes on AC
  • Base AC = 10 for all characters.
  • There are 10 types of AC bonuses: Armor, Shield, DEX, WIS, Natural, Deflection, Size, Sacred, Luck, Insight and Miscellaneous. DEX and WIS in theory are not a “type” of bonus, but I think it is easiestly included in this manner.
  • DEX bonus is included in all AC calculations in DDO. It can be limited by armor type, materials, and debuffs.
  • WIS Bonus is applicable to anyone with at least one level of Monk. In order to gain your Wisdom Bonus to AC, you Must not be wearing any armor or using a Sheild. You also must not be "Heavily Encumbered". Contrary to popular beleif, you do NOT have to be Centered in order to receive this bonus to your AC. This FOllows PnP and is Considered Working as Intended.
  • Unless the bonus is Dodge or Miscellaneous type, they do not stack. That is, the highest individual bonus in that type is used.
  • Items marked with an asterick(*) have been added or updated in this revision.

Sources of Armor Bonus
  • *Item: Armor (+1-15, essentially Armor Base Bonus + Enchantment bonus, randomly generated) (White Dragonscale armor Receives a +1 Modifier to Armor and DragonTouched receives +2)
  • *Item: Docent (+0-6, WF only, randomly generated – these stack with WF Body Feats below, but not other items such as armored bracers) DragonTouched Docents receive extra Armor Bonus.
  • *Item: Armored Bracers (+1-8, randomly generated)
  • Item: Blackwidow Bracers (+4, Waterworks end reward)
  • Item: Jeeka's Spangle (+2)
  • Item: White Dragonscale Robe (+6, White Dragon Scales)
  • Item: Black Dragonscale Robe (+5, Black Dragon Scales)
  • Item: Robe of Magi (+5, Black Mausoleum from Mentau Chest)
  • Item: Ironweave Robe (+5, from Dragon Chest)
  • Item: Cloth of the Faithful (+5, from Accursed Ascension, SF Side amulet upgrade)
  • Item: Blue Dragonscale Robe (+4, Blue Dragon Scales)
  • Item: Vulkoorim Dervish Robe (+4, from Sands of Menechtarun)
  • Item: Dragoncrafted Robe (+4, Dragon Relics)
  • Item: Giantcrafted Robe (+4, Giant Relics)
  • Item: Beta Noir (+4, bracers from Cursed Crypt)
  • Item: Shroud of the Abbot (+4, from Accursed Ascension raid chest)
  • Item: Elfcrafted Robe (+3, Elf Relics)
  • Item: Robe of Arcane Puisance (+3, from Tempest Spine)
  • Item: Delera's Vestments (+2, from Delera's Tomb end reward)
  • Item: Thanatos Weave Robe (+2, from South Threnal end reward)
  • Spell: Mage Armor (+4)
  • Feat: Warforged Composite Plating (+2, automatic for WF)
  • Feat: Warforged Mithril Body (+5)
  • Feat: Warforged Adamantine Body (+8)

NOTE: Many armors such as KDS or Tourney armor have different specs than is normal (higher DEX bonus, lower base, etc.). If using those, it is important to take that into account.
NOTE: WF may only have 1 body feat at any given time, Composite, Mithril or Adamantine.

Sources of Shield Bonus
  • Item: Shields (+1-9, Randomly Generated)
  • Spell: Shield (+4)
  • Feat: Two Weapon Defense (+1, while dual-wielding)
  • *Ranger Tempest +2,+3,+4 depending on Tier of PrE Class.

Sources of DEX Bonus
NOTE: The following list is ways to increase your DEX Score. Not AC. AC increases for each Even tier of DEX.
NOTE: You need increments of 2 after achieving a base value of 10 DEX to get each incremental +1 bonus.

NOTE: DEX bonus cannot exceed Max Dex Bonus of associated armor type and any Armor Mastery enhancements taken. Tower Shields also impact your Max Dex Bonus if they are lower than that associated with your armor.

Small, Heavy and Large shields do not limit the amout of Dex you can apply to your AC.
Wooden and Steel Tower Shields limit your Dex bonus to 2.
Mithral Tower Shields Limit your Dex Bonus to 4.
Fighters can take the 'Tower Shield Mastery' enhancment line to increase their maximum dex bonus using Tower Shields. Stalwart Defender also has a comopnant to raise the dex limit.

Various Armors also have a maximum Dex limit.
Half Plate: 0
Full Plate: 1
Chainmail: 2
Breastplate: 3
Brigadine:3
Chain Shirt: 4
Studded Leather: 5
Leather: 6
Padded: 8

Metal armor can have one of 2 different modifiers to increase its maximum dex bonus natrualy.
The most sought after is "Mithral" Mithral Increases the max dex bonus by 2. (IE: Mithral Full Plate has a Max dex bonus of 3)
Note: the term "elven" indicates that the armor is also made out of Mithral. Usually found on Chainmail. IE: Elven Chainmail has a 4 Max Dex and is made out of Mithral steel.
the second type for armor is "Darkleaf" which increases max dex bonus by 1. IE: Darkleaf Breastplate would have a Max dex bonus of 4

Fighters can increase the max dex allowed on armor by taking the "Fighter Armor Mastery" Enhancement Line.
Dwarves also receive the Armor Mastery Line(Dwarven) and it may be stacked with Fighter Armor Mastery.
the "Daggertooth's Belt" rare drop from The Crucible mimics the Fighter Armor Mastery II Enhancement. It stacks with Dwaven Armor Mastery, but not FIghter Armor Mastery.
Stalwart Defender and Defender of Sibery's Prestige Enhancments also have components that can increase max dex bonus'

Robes and Outfits have no limitations to the amount of dex you can apply to yoru AC.
  • Stat: Base DEX. Starting Character dex of 8 to 20
  • Item: “Dexterous” prefix (Random Items +1 to +6)
  • Enhancement: Ranger DEX 1-3 (stacks with racial, but not other class, DEX enhancements)
  • Enhancement: Rogue DEX 1-3 (stacks with racial, but not other class, DEX enhancements)
  • Enhancement: Halfling DEX 1-2
  • Enhancement: Elf DEX 1-2
  • Enhancement: Drow DEX 1-2
  • *Tomes: +1,+2,+3,+4 Random Drops, Raid Loot.
  • Spell: Cat’s Grace (+4 – doesn’t stack with any equipped Item)
  • *Item: Shroud Crafted Weapons +1,+2 (Stacking)
  • *Item Tower of Despair Rings +1,+2 (Does not stack with Shroud Items)
  • *Yugoloth Favor Potion +2 (Stacks with everything)
  • *Turbine Store Potion +2 (Stacks with Everything)
  • Alchemical Dex Bonus: House D Collectable Turn Ins. +1,+2,+3
  • Item: Litany of the Dead Trinket: +1 Profane Bonus to all Stats
  • Monk Stance: Air. Provides +2,+3,+4 Dex Bonus While In Stance

*Sources of WIS Bonus
NOTE: The following list is ways to increase your WIS Score. Not AC. AC increases for each Even tier of WIS as long as you have at least 1 Monk Level..
NOTE: You need increments of 2 after achieving a base value of 10 WIS to get each incremental +1 bonus.

NOTE: In order to receive your Wisdom Modifier to AC, you must have at least One level of Monk and not use any armor or Sheilds. You also cannot be Heavily Encumbered.
  • Stat: Base WIS (-1 to +4.) Starting Character dex of 8(-1) to 18(+5)
  • Item: “Wise” prefix (+1-+3, need increments of 2 after achieveing base of 10 DEX to get each incremental +1 bonus)

  • Yugoloth Favor Potion +2 (Stacks with everything)
  • Turbine Store Potion +2 (Unconfirmed if stacks with Yugoloth Potions, But stacks with everything else)
  • Alchemical Wis Bonus: House D Collectable Turn Ins. +1,+2,+3
  • Item: Litany of the Dead Trinket: +1 Profane Bonus to all Stats
  • Monk Stance: Water. Provides +2,+3,+4 Wisdom Bonus while In Stance


Sources of Natural Armor Bonus
  • Item: Pre-order Amulet (+1)
  • Item: Shroud of the Abbot (+4, from Accursed Ascension raid chest)
  • Item: Hammer of Life (+2, Dragon Chest)
  • Item: Seal of Earth (+3, from DQ Chest)
  • Item: Ring of Balance (+2, Invader Tokens)
  • Spell: Madstone Rage (+4, only castable from Madstone Boots from Reaver Raid Chest)
  • Spell: Barkskin (+3-5, Ranger base or potion)
  • Spell: Tenser's Transformation (+4, Wizard/Sorcerer base or scroll)
  • Enhancement: Bladesworn Transformation (+4, WF only, req. Cleric 6/Paladin 9)
  • *Crafted Effect: +4 Natrual (Tier 3 Dragontouched Random Effect)
  • Item:essence of despair( +2 wisdom, +4 natural armor and -4 reflex save.)

Sources of Deflection Bonus
  • Item: "of Protection" Item (+1-5, Randomly Generated)
  • Item: “of Stability” (+2, True Neutral only)
  • Item: "of Greater Stability" (+4, True Neutral only)
  • Item: Sorrel (+4, Shield of Legend option for collectible turn-ins)
  • Item: Iron Manacles (+4, Chaotic Align only (UMD DC20), from Delera's Tomb end reward)
  • Item: Spectacular Optics (+3, from South Threnal end reward)
  • Item: Kundarak Warding Bracers (+3, from Dragon Chest)
  • Item: Ring of the Silver Concord (+2, from Dragon Chest)
  • Item: Cloak of Shadows (+2, from Vampire Chest)
  • Item: Dusty Rose Ioun Stone (+1)
  • Item: Spiked Turban (+3, from Sands of Menechtarun)

  • Item: Chaosgarde Bracers (+2, lawful Align only DC20, from Xorian Cipher)
  • Item: Chattering Ring (+3, from Titan Chest)
  • Item: Icy Raiments(+4) Named drop from Garamol Subterrane Rare Encounter
  • Crafted: Dragontouched Tier 3 Random Rune +3 (Does NOT stack with Chattering RIng)
  • Spell: Haste (+1)
  • Feat: Dodge (+1)
  • Feat: Defensive Stance (+2, while activated)
  • Feat: Combat Expertise (+5, while activated)
  • Feat: Mobility (+4, only when Tumbling)
  • Feat: Uncanny Dodge (+4 or +6, Barbarian/Rogue Only)
  • Enhancement: Dwarven Giant Dodger (+1-3, Dwarf only, only Vs. Giants)
  • Enhancement: Fighter's Mobility (+2-6, requires Mobility, only when Tumbling)
  • Enhancement: Favoured Defense (+1-3, Ranger only, Vs. Favoured Enemies)
  • Race: Giant Evasion (+4, Dwarf only, only Vs. Giants)

  • Levicks Defenders Sets (+3 with Two Items, +5 with all Three Items/Effects (Hound Sheild, Hound Bracers, Tier 3 Dragontouched Effect)
  • Item: Lorinthor's Belt(+1)

Source of Misc Bonuses (Misc bonuses stack)
  • *Action: Active Block (+2, only while Blocking) (NOTE: Paladin Defender of Sibery's and
  • Fighter Slatwart Defender PrE's Add +1 to Blocking AC at each tier)(Total +5)
  • *Class: Paladin's Aura of Good (+1-5)
  • *Class PrE Bonus: Defender of Sibery's III Grants +1 Additional to your Pally AC Aura.
  • Enhancement: Action Boost (+2-5, Paladin/Fighter only)
  • Enhancement: Hero's Companion (+1-3)
  • Enhancement: Human Versatility - Armor Class (+2-5, Human only)
  • *Fighter PrE: Stalwart Defender +1,+2,+3 (Tiers I,II,III) Note: This may also be considered a Dodge Bonus. Need confirmation
  • *Monks gain an additional +1 to +5 AC based on Level. These bonus's are granted at Levels 2,5,10,15, and 20.
  • Item: Band of Sibery's: +2 AC if worn by a Defender of Sibery's III enhanced Character.
  • Item: Cinders Band: +2 AC if worn by a Stalwart Defender III Enhanced Character

Other Notes
  • You can only have one "stance" activated at a time, e.g. Defensive Fighting *or* Combat Expertise.
  • Combat Expertise is also mutually exclusive with offensive toggles.

Should be 1-5, not 1-6. Also, don't forget Docent of the Flames and Docent of the Claw (+5, +1 enhanced plating or something like that).

Would be cool to link the items to the screenshots of them posted on the Definitive Loot thread (would make it more clear which item slots each uses).

Typo with "togain." But also, I think "centered" means that you have to have monk weapons equipped... and Minibagel confirmed that his TWF rapier monk still gets his Centered bonus to AC when using rapiers (Patch 1).

There are +1-3 alchemical stat pots(from house D collectors) that are supposed to stack with yugoloth and store pots I believe.

edit: There are also AC set bonuses on some of the rings that are of unknown type/stacking.

Levik's Defender set can add +3 Insight (2 pieces) or +5 Insight (3 pieces) to AC as well.

Deflection Bonus, can get +5 from dragontouched armor, or by crafting min2 shroud item

Sources of Dodge Bonus (Dodge bonuses Stack) - might want to add that you can craft a shroud item that give you an extra haste when you get hit (air,air,air), I am pretty sure the ac stacks for that

Kind of a nitpick but.. for the dex and wis sections you probably should tell how much dex/wis each item on the list gives instead of how much bonus it gives you, might confuse people with tomes in there, +4 damn that is like a +8 tome! Hopefully everyone who reads this knows what a tome is so probably just ignore this.

ACtually There are some docents that Provide 0 Enhancment as I recall. The +6 Represents the DT and Emerald Claw Docents.

Typo with "togain." But also, I think "centered" means that you have to have monk weapons equipped... and Minibagel confirmed that his TWF rapier monk still gets his Centered bonus to AC when using rapiers (Patch 1).

Cool, I still think that is NOT WAI, but I will adjust my notation.
The centered bonus is misnamed; its the +1 innate ac monks gain at monk1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 .. and its not tied to being centered any more than the wis bonus to ac is.

OK, I think I got all these updates in. I dont think we need to add every named item that provides a Dex or Wisdom bonus unless it stacks (Which reminds me, I have to add the LotD Trinket).

I'm not up on every single Amrath Ring/Set Bonus as far as AC goes. If someone could compile that stuff, it would be appreciated.

I'll tweak the Dex and Wisdom to indicate more clearly that the bonus's reflected are to the DEX or WIS, not AC.

If you're a dos3 and dont have bulwark 4, you're a crazy person

the point is that up to +6 is available

Unfortunalty, there is no prereq to play DDO of "Not being Crazy". The additional Bonus has been noted.

in the department of boosting dex and wis, there are also the monk stances.

and the bard song Inspire Heroics is actually a +4 dodge bonus
