What Developers Can Do and Where Gamers Can Get Help

    --------------------------***--------------------------

ALL HANDS ON DECK! I hereby invite the entire DDO community, throughout the world, and from ALL SERVERS of Eberron proper to our Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11, 2013 !!

A few things have remained a constant here in DDO since 2005. The worldwide community of gamers, daytime and nightly D&D adventuring, the camaraderie of young and old, and a commitment to welcome the armed forces community, family, friends into the fold. Turbine may have created this game, but its those of us that have taken this a step further... that come back to play in the world of Dungeons & Dragons time and time again,to share a camaraderie thats more than skin deep, that continue to make this a special place.

Tyrs Paladium wishes to welcome all to join us to pay tribute to veterans, and their families from the United States, and friendly nations around the world. We gather solely to further our cause, of appreciation to those who risk life and limb, to allow us to awake another day, hug our families/kids/parents, and do whatever it is we want to do.

    * If you do not already reside on Ghallanda, all you need to do is roll a fresh toon on Ghallanda... contact me privately for precise instruction if necessary.

This is for our brave soldiers, I hope to see some of you there!! /Salute

    FEATURING:

Army Captain William Swensen Receives Metal of Honor

Every once in a while, there comes a hero whose bravery earns him or her America’s highest military award, the Medal of Honor. Retired Army Captain William Swenson is one of those heroes.

Captain Swenson was recognized for his courageous actions on September 8, 2009 — the day of a brutal, seven-hour firefight against Taliban insurgents near the border of Pakistan that left four Americans, 10 Afghan soldiers, and a translator dead. Amid the turmoil, Swenson ran back into enemy fire repeatedly to rescue and evacuate both injured Americans and Afghan soldiers.

This coming Monday, we are going to tell his amazing story, and we will honor this great man.

VETERANS & ADAPTIVE DEVICES FOR VIDEO GAMING
...what Developers Can Do To Help.

For the disabled, including our returning veterans, video games can be a lifesaver. But developers have been slow to make their products more accessible. We CAN do more, and SHOULD do more.

U.S. Census data reports that 41.3 million Americans have some level of disability. That’s roughly 14 percent of the population. And if I were a betting Leslie, I'd bet that a larger percentage of disabled play MMOs than those who aren't disabled. Furthermore, Id lay a wager that a larger percentage of disabled gamers actually spend money (and more of it) on MMOs due to the time they spend at their PCs (and likely in game).

NBC did a great story on this a while back. For one musician they portrayed, game accessibility is about changing someone’s life for the better. “If you give the opportunity (to play games) to someone who is home bound, or locked inside a body that doesn’t work but their brain functions perfectly, you have the opportunity to save lives,” was her quote.

Here's an even better quote: “If I have to stare at a wall and become an inanimate object, it’s not a life … It’s not just a game, it’s a community.”

    ---------

Isn't that the very essence of Dungeons & Dragons? To accept anyone into our community that wishes to be a contributing member in our world?

We have to find a better way.

    More planned so stay tuned!

    WHEN:

The Tyrs Paladium guild's Veterans Day Ceremony is held each year on November 11th on Ghallanda. This year the ceremony commences on MONDAY, November 11th, precisely at 3 PM EST and again at 9:00 PM EST.

    WHERE:

    We will meet this
year on the Ghallanda server, in House Deneith, in the Temple of the Sovereign Host.

WHEN IS THAT IN YOUR TIMEZONE? The 3PM event, The 9PM event.

    --------------------------***--------------------------

We highly recommend that you give a little bit of your time and resources to your local community's veteran's association/organization if you are able. Veterans and their families can benefit directly in various ways.

One of my favorite organizations I got involved with this year is:

This year we'll be sending a video of our event oversees directly to US and ally troops, as well as to members of the National Veterans Wheelchair Games which is a sports and rehabilitation program for
military service veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations or certain neurological problems.

Thank you Shorlong! I'll be looking forward to meeting the members of the Dark Creed in DDO, as well as your other games. If they roll up a toon in DDO though, they may get hooked

Thanks Uska. I always thought our community was the greatest gaming community in mmos. That was certainly strained this year with the replacement of the old DDO website, and other Turbine decisions. But as always, every year we do these events, shortly into each ceremony I realize the playerbase itself has never changed. From the yearning for teamwork, to appreciation to the camaraderie.

These ceremonies are always very touching, and fill a real void in the gaming world. Looking forward to seeing you Uska again, bring friends!

Vet here. Not quite social enough to go to events and such, but the support is nice to see. A lot of vets really need it right now.

Well met, 01000010, and thank you for your service. Understood, sending PM.

As for that last part, you are very right indeed... which is one of the major motivating factors we choose to do these events, to raise awareness.

Our video this year for the first time will contain snippets from DDO and from Neverwinter ceremonies. I'm pretty excited to see how it will turn out...

I fail to see how an ingame event in DDO gives any support to veterans, but I guess you can always try.

take it from me, moral support is always right, not everyone can donate time or hard earned cash, but just knowing people out there care, respect and appreciate makes everything we ever did and do worth it.......

Agreed. Just so happens some who attend our ceremonies do donate their time and money, myself included. But many just cannot, for all kinds of reasons. This ceremony is a way to show appreciation where its not expected. Just because we want to. Without additional agendas, or motives otherwise. Its also to get the word out there.

Many people spend more of their day staring at a computer screen than enjoying fresh air. 96% of my clients start looking to buy a home on the internet. Its a completely different world out there than it was even 20 years ago. We feel its important to fill this web-space, as well as we do in person, with love and appreciation for our veterans.expected

Maybe you didn't READ the responses from veterans in this thread? And if you don't want to participate, why not just ignore the thread instead of trying to put a damper on people trying to do something good?

    Thanks HAL.

A few dont get it and they dont bother me as much, because some actually show up and tell me later, "Wow!". And some of those were veterans, and that's what puts a smile on my face and makes me do this every year.

I dont care if only one shows up. If this benefits one person, it was well worth my time.

A long, long time ago in a far away land, I bought a game called Civilization III.

It had cities and mountains and lights and lakes.

    One could build and prosper.

    Make one's own farm.

    Create workers and roads.

Those workers could labor in art and beauty stacking brick by brick...

Till the framework of a Wonder of the World began to emerge.

Libraries could be raised filled with books of knowledge.

Then one day in that new world of wonder and joy, a hoard marched in and razed my Wonder of the World to the ground.

That day, I realized an artist such as myself needed a very special friend to watch over my art.

To those faithful souls, I pay tribute, wherever they might be...

Rolled a PDK toon in Galiland and parked her in the Temple of Unity, as a thank you.

LOL! Dude, I'm just impressed you survived and can think straight after that game! I know people that bought that game 12 years ago that are still playing it today --

I never got into it, cause D&D games meant more to me at the time, Baldurs Gate comes to mind. Minsc ate PDK for breakfast, spinach for lunch, and Chuck Norris for dinner.

As Minsc once said "Cities always teem with evil and decay. Let's give it a good shake and see what falls out!"
