Default A Study in Sable - Guide to thrall identification

Big thanks to Ivantilus, Sevraa and Ruemeridian for all of their assistance, input and patience while gathering this information.

This guide is intended only for determining which NPC is a thrall within the phases of the quest and which items are used to pacify them.

    Quest Items
There are two sets of four items used during the quest. All items have random locations requiring a small amount of searching.

    Pacification Items
These items are used to pacify the NPCs, when revealed as a thrall, and each item is specific to a particular NPC. They are randomly placed throughout the accessible areas when the quest begins.

    • Amulet of the Medusa is used on Flora Reynard
    • Hunter's Map is used on Sir Chadrus Thurling
    • Strong Sleeping Draught is used on Alyk Glenweir
    • Mystic Maze is used on Dareon Krenner

    Identification Items
These items are used to identify an NPC that has become a thrall. Each item has a single use but can be used on any of the NPCs so choose wisely. One of these items will be randomly placed behind each of the four locked areas within the quest.

    • Orb of Sunlight is located in the West Chambers
    • Rat Trap is located in the Wine Cellar (Use the trap to catch the rat in the crypt and use the Rat in a Trap on the NPC)
    • Gem of Revelation is located in the Attic
    • Scraps's Chew Toy is located in the Hedge Maze

Only 1 player should pick up the items within this quest! The items cannot be traded once picked up. If Player A has picked up the Amulet of the Medusa and Player B has picked up the Identification item for a phase where Flora Reynard is a thrall, the party will be unable to pacify her.

    Determining the current thrall
During each phase of the quest another of the NPCs will become a thrall. They will remain a thrall until the end of the quest so it becomes easier to identify them as the quest progresses. During the last phase, just before the end fight, all the NPCs will be a thrall so any party is guaranteed to identify at least one thrall.

Talking to each NPC during each phase of the quest and reading their initial dialog will give clues about which is currently a thrall. Below are the responses each NPC will give when they have become a thrall.

    Alyk Glenweir
    • Day and Night - The voice - it calls to me! So clear, so strong, so commanding.

    Sir Chadrus Thurling
    • Day and Night - How grand it will be to see the master of the house. We'll just 'to' have to wait here patiently for him.

    Flora Reynard
    • Day - So many fine possessions, gathered over centuries! They must not be disturbed!
    • Night - We should not prowl about the house at night, but turn in and wait for our host to arrive.

    Dareon Krenner
    • Day - It's so quiet here, so peaceful. I could just stay here forever, without a thought in my mind...
    • Night - I was just about to retire. Nothing like a soothing night's sleep in the country. It's so quiet here, so peaceful. I could just stay here forever, without a thought in my mind...

picture is wrong. Went to Dareon when his eyes were lit (the first phase) and said he was not a thrall.

I wish I could be more thorough in my feedback, but my partner was crashing hard so we did guess work after the first clue flopped on us.

There is a possibility that the first round there is a different system or randomness to it.

Our run last nite the one was lit that would indicate the lady was the thrall, however it said she was not.

Each subsequent round was accurate. At the time we had a bug showing to investigate that the wine cellar without actually being open. Each of the three other rounds corresponded exactly with the lights to what we had worked out with each house guest. So we assumed based on the process of elimination that something happened with that first round.

So far we have been 3 for 3 in the upper left hand face corresponding with the man who hangs out in the library. And 2 for 2 on the hunter and the sleepy guy with their corresponding lights.

    Thumbs up

Even if ddowiki's how-to is legit I find it hard to memorize.

My prefered method is to ask personal question -> ask about how they feel (second option).

    Thrall dialogues:

I just ran this quest a lot more using different characters and switching between different accounts. The first four were identical to the picture I had posted but after that I started to see a couple of the NPCs change positions but at least two were always the same. The last run they were completely different. I am chalking this up to account specific patterns in the 'randomness' of the game.

I had hoped it was a simple as the wall positions in the crypt where a simple picture could serve as a quick reference but it does not appear that will happen. So the text responses from the NPC dialogs is the only key to determining the thralls.

Thank you. I just read it and what I have just posted and what is posted there are largely the same. I think this method will turn out to be the correct one.

Thanks a lot for the updated information guys, will try this when my partner gets home tonight. I think the mention of the werewolf in the maze and the frankenstien creature on the roof should get some sort of mention in here if possible, if there is a way to disable the lightning of the golem or if to beat it with a melee is to run about and hope with high lightning resist and absorb. The were wolf is pretty standard though.

The were wolf is in the maze at night time at the keeper's shack in the furthest corner.

    Thrall dialogues:

This is exactly the right approach. If you pick the dialog to talk about them or ask a personal question, then pick the 2nd choice, there is a clear difference between what they say when the are/aren't the thrall (as shown in the examples).
    Thelanis:
Annikka (Sorc), Dannikka (F), Jannikka (Rgr)
    Tamikka (Bard), Famikka (Rgr)
    Bellynda (Cl), Mellynda (M)

you can pew pew the golem whille standing safely downstairs.

The lycantrope can be safely pew pewed from on top of the shed, because 300 kg of teeth, claw, fur, muscle and rage, aperently can't jump on top of 1,5 meters of shed.
Being controlled by an human/wolf hybrid intelect is aperently not enough to move around the corner?
Just standing there for 10 min (far to much hp on EE) whille being pelted with arrows....

No wonder these guys are extinct in Eberrron, even those clowns from the silver flame can build a wood box and climb on it when encountering a lycantrope.
From a flesh golem this was to be expected, but from a wherewolf? sight......

Last time I ran this none in our party were able to jump on top of the shack. We were able to do this earlier when the quest came out. I am wondering if they changed this in one of the recent updates
