A few things have remained a constant here in DDO since 2005. The worldwide community of gamers, daytime and nightly D&D adventuring, the camaraderie of young and old, and a commitment to welcome the armed forces community, family, friends into the fold. Turbine may have created this game, but its those of us that have taken this a step further... that come back to play in the world of Dungeons & Dragons time and time again,to share a camaraderie thats more than skin deep, that continue to make DDO a special place.


The Tyrs Paladium guild, a guild filled with many proud veterans from many nations, once again wishes to welcome all to join us to pay tribute to veterans, and their families from the United States, as well as those from nations around the world, who've risked life and limb to fight for human dignity and freedom. We gather solely to further our cause, of appreciation to those who put their lives on the line each and every day, to allow us to awake yet another day, to hug our families, our kids, our parents, and do whatever it is we want to do.

This is the longest running, most witnessed event in DDO history, thanks to all who've attended over the years. As long as there is a demand and DDO servers, we'll be there.

We highly recommend that you give a little bit of your time and resources to your local community's veteran's association/organization if you are able. Veterans and their families can benefit directly in various ways.

One of my favorite organizations I got involved with the past two years is:

This year we'll be sending a video of our event oversees directly to US and ally troops, as well as to members of the National Veterans Wheelchair Games which is a sports and rehabilitation program for
military service veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition due to spinal cord injuries, amputations or certain neurological problems.

Our event this year is dedicated to this very special human being, who fought in World War II, who earned this Medal of Honor, yet didn't fire a single shot, wouldn't even carry his weapon... Thank you for showing nearly inhuman bravery Corporal Desmond Doss. We're going to tell his incredible story this November 11. Don't miss it!

We are going to pay tribute to CPL. Nathan Cirillo, who was cowardly shot while guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa. Since the terrorist attack in Canada that took his life, there's been such an outpouring of support. One particular showing really is worth detailing, an incredible statement of support by American and Canadian Hero, and 5 time Purple Heart recipient Major Sinke.

A great charity in the UK for blind Veterans.



St Dunstan's, the world famous organization for blind servicemen, was founded in early 1915, "when few people thought it possible that a blind person could lead a happy and useful life." Its founder Sir Arthur Pearson, himself blind, was a remarkable man, and "although no one then realized it, the blind man's world would never be the same, after the formation of St Dunstan's" said lan Fraser, who was Pearson's second in command and had lost his sight on the Somme.

On Christmas Day 1915, The Illustrated London News informed its readers that, "in a corner of London's most beautiful park is a house where miracles are worked." It was to this house that soldiers and sailors were brought who had suffered the cruelest injury that war could inflict, they had been blinded. The house was in Regent's Park and it was St Dunstan's Hostel.

The world famous organization housed in the park issued a number of fund-raising picture postcards during the Great War. This post is to honor St Dunstan's work, and attempt to describe the establishment of St Dunstan's and its activities through the postcards it published during that time.



A Victoria Cross hero - Captain Angus Buchanan

One of the residents at St Dunstan's was Victoria Crossholder Captain Angus Buchanan, who received the decoration after he rescued "under heavy machine?gun fire" two wounded soldiers trapped in No?Man's Land.Buchanan was the only V.C. holder to be blinded in the Great War and St Dunstan'ssaluted him by issuing a postcard featuring this brave man.



This card was the first in a set of three and was dedicated to Captain Angus Buchanan V.C., who studied braille and typewriting at St Dunstan's. He was a student at Oxford university when the war broke out and in 1919 went back there to study law. He became articled to a firm of solicitors in Gloucestershire. In 1942, he told Ian Frazer, "I am still very fit and have plenty to do." He died two years later.

As terrible and bloody battles raged on the Somme in thesummer and autumn of 1916, more battle?blinded soldiers came under the care ofSt Dunstan's. It was probably in the late summer of 1916 that the organizationissued a set of five postcards.






"BLINDED FOR YOU" A splendid and moving picture by R.Caton Woodville, which brings to life the noise and confusion of battle and theunseen danger lying in wait for a blinded soldier. Woodville, a painter in oils and watercolors, traveled extensively, often reporting from the battle?front.For instance, he observed the Russo?Turkish War of 1878, the Egyptian War of1882, the Anglo/Boer War and the Great War. His illustrations regularly appeared in The Illustrated London News.



"PALS." It seems the wholesale use of guide dogs forblind ex?servicemen did not begin until the early 1930s. Apparently, many ofthe men had been reluctant to use them, because of the pre?war image of the blind beggar and his dog. Perhaps this card was meant to change peoples opinion.



"WHENNIGHT SETS IN THE SUN IS DOWN." This card Caton Woodville's hauntingpainting which depicted a blind soldier being led away in the aftermath ofbattle, while in the background shadowy figures tend to the dead and wounded. Amemorable picture.



"YOU'VE NOT SAID HOW I'VE GROWED, DADDY!" This was Thomas Henry's impression of a blinded officer returning to his family. The text on the reverse of the card reads, "The ever increasing difficulties experienced by the blind women employees of the National Institute for the Blind in finding suitable lodgings for themselves has led the Council to provide a Hostel for their use at 38 and 40 Langham Street,W."

In 1961, lan Fraser said, "Men whose sight had been damaged in the early days of the [1914-18) war, who had left hospital then with an adequate amount of vision, and when sight had since deteriorated to the point of blindness, would eventually nearly double our numbers.

"Up to the present - and the list is still not closed - we have had over 2,900 men who lost their sight through service in the First World War... Some good comes out of evil, and even war itself has produced its highlights of human conduct. Britain, and indeed the whole world, is the better for the existence of St Dunstan's, and its message will go on."

Sir Arthur Pearson, who died 1921, would have been pleased to know that the idea which inspired "The House of Miracles" is still alive and active today.

Today we have a tribute dedicated to Veterans and their families. This project is comprised completely of legendary bodybuilder and motivational speaker CT Fletcher's Fans that are Veterans or currently enlisted in the military.

All branches of the military are represented from all parts of the world. CT Fletcher being a veteran himself, has a special place in his heart for military members.

dignitary.

His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his
grip on the rifle.

He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.

How often are the guards changed?


Guards
are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.

What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?

For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he
must be between 5' 10' and 6' 2' tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30.


They
must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb,
live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot
drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of
their lives. They cannot swear in public for the
rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the
uniform or the tomb in any way.


After
two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that
is worn on
their lapel signifying they
served as guard of the tomb. There are only
400 presently worn. The guard must obey
these rules for the rest of their
lives or
give up the wreath pin.


The
shoes are specially made with very thick soles
to keep the heat and cold from their feet.
There are metal heel plates that extend to
the top
of the shoe in order to make the loud click as
they come

to a halt.

There are no
wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform. Guards
dress for duty
in front of a full-length
mirror.

The first six months of duty a
guard cannot talk to anyone nor
watch TV.
All off duty time is spent studying the 175
notable people laid
to rest in
Arlington National Cemetery .
A guard must memorize who they are and where
they are interred. Among the notables are:

President Taft,
Joe Lewis {the boxer}
Medal of Honor winner Audie L. Murphy, the most
decorated soldier of WWII and of Hollywood fame.
Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty..
ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.

In
2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was
approaching Washington ,
DC , our
US Senate/House took 2 days
off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC
evening news, it was reported that because of
the dangers from the
hurricane, the military
members assigned the duty of guarding the Tomb
of
the Unknown Soldier were given permission
to suspend the assignment. They

respectfully declined the offer, "No way,
Sir!" Soaked to the skin,
marching in the
pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that
guarding
the Tomb was not just an assignment,


it was the highest honor that can be
afforded
to a service person. The tomb has been patrolled
continuously,
24/7, since 1930.

Nathan Cirillo, as well as a decorated retired American Marine who risked his life (and sadly still is) to pay his tribute to Nathan the best way he could realize.
