    Thumbs up Shuricannon 2.0

Ok i finally decided to start a new thread with the DPS-focused version of my Shuricannon build and put it here in the monk subforum. The old thread was way too long and partly outdated and the game has changed a lot since the other thread was posted more than a year ago.

The original variant was - besides other things - focused on EE viable high AC through Combat Expertise and Bulwark of Defense and used Shiradi Champion as ED for additional damage and CC. Since the endgame shifted towards undead and constructs with high fortification this build is focused on high Fortification bypass with Precision stance to greatly improve the high DPS-output of the amazing crit range and multipliers.
Since Mortal Fear was introduced on Thunderforged Weapons i consider trash mobs not too much of an issue so this build will lean towards better boss DPS (Epic Red Dragon Armor instead of Epic Black Dragon, less means to make mobs helpless,...)

This build is recommended to run in Legendary Dreadnaught with Divine Crusader as a second-best option (for the MoD raid to be immune to encasement for example).

    Some offensive stats:
    - Highest monk crit profile in Mountain Stance: (15-18x2, 19-20x5 !!!) in Legendary Dreadnaught, (13-18x2, 19-20x4) in Divine Crusader
    - +29 Seeker damage for even higher crit damage (+12 EE Consuming Darkness, +5 Ins. from Adamantine Cloak of the Wolf, +6 Tactical Training Room, +6 Critical Damage from LD)
    - High base damage for even higher crit damage (70 ranged power from Blitz, 30% Damage Boost, 30% Archer's Focus, Know the Angles)
    - up to 95% Armor Piercing: 80% (=35% Dragon's Edge, 15% twisted Grim Precision, 25% Precision Stance, 5% Trapsmith's Workshop) +15% with slotted Deconstructor augment
    - 120+ ranged power (with Blitz, Epic Levels, ED, TOEE weapon and set bonus) to multiply damage from Venomed Blades (scales with 200%) and Sneak Attacks
    - High number of attacks (Shuriken Expertise, Ninja II, 10k Stars, Doubleshot) makes it easy to keep up Blitz stacks and boosts DPS
    - Vorpal on all attacks

    Notable Defense:
    - 30% Dodge
    - 25% Incorporeality
    - 25% Lesser Displacement (TOEE Robe) + GS Displacement Clickies
    - High AC
    - Improved Evasion (equal to 100 MRR) + 30 MRR from Sheltering items + 25 Insightful MRR from Mysterious Cloak/Bracers + 4 MRR from TOEE Greater mythic armor upgrade
    - PRR from Blitz(30), Sheltering(30), Mountain Stance(15) (+Iron Skin(15), if you want to spend the AP, +Standing with Stone(15) if you twist it), Epic/Iconic Past Lifes(36), Planar Focus(15) (below lvl 28), TOEE Greater mythic armor upgrade (4)
    - DR 10/Epic
    - High Saves
    - Deflect Arrows
    - Highest running speed and Abundant Step
    - Invisibility at will, high Move Silently Skill and Faster Sneaking

Note that only if you choose Lawful Neutral alignment you will be able to fully benefit from the Epic Litany (no neg level) but then you will need 32+ UMD to use Celestia in the Offhand!

    Twists:
    - Whirling Wrists
    - Grim Precision (in non-Undead or Construct content you can switch this to something else)
    - Cocoon
    - Enlightenment

    Skills (+4 INT tome):
    - Concentration max
    - Spot max.
    - Heal max.
    - UMD max.
    - Tumble 1
    - Move Silently or Search rest

    Enhancements:
    Drow Tree (18 pts):
    - Cores x4
    - Full Xendrik Weapon Training
    - Venomed Blades line x1
    - Improved Dodge x2
(If you end up at uneven DEX you can take 2 points from DEX from the harper tree and the 2 from Improved Dodge and take the full Venomed Blades line)

    Henshin Mystic Tree (8 pts):
    - 1st core
    - Way of the Patient Tortoise
    - Negotiator 2x
    - Contemplation 3x

    Ninja Spy (41 pts):
    - All cores
    - Full Sneak Attack Training + Crippling Strike
    - Stealthy x3
    - Faster Sneaking x2
    - Acrobatic x3
    - Agility x3
    - No Mercy x3
    - DEX x2
    - Sting of the Ninja

    Harper Tree (13 pts):
    - Cores x3
    - Harper Enchantment
    - Traveler's Toughness x2
    - Know the Angles x3
    - DEX x1
(If you are at uneven DEX you can also drop 2 points from tier 3 DEX and put them into Venomed Blades)

VARIANT: For a super-high physical DPS variant but with a bit more Ki management to do you can:
    - drop Tier 5 Crippling Strike in the Ninja tree and invest it into Faster Sneaking - now you can access Tier 5 in Harper
    - put all points from Henshin into Harper (go for Tier 5 Versatile Adept IV, Harper Enchantment of Righteousness)
    - put most points from the class tree into harper

    Legendary Dreadnaught point Distribution:
Tier 1: CON, 2xExtra Action Boost
Tier 2: CON, 3xAction Boost: Damage
    Tier 3: CON, 3xCritical Damage
    Tier 4: CON
Tier 5: CON, Devastating Critical, Advancing Blows (works with ranged even though probably not WAI)
    Tier 6: Master's Blitz Resistance (+30 PRR)

    U27 Gear:
    Head: Sightless
    Goggles: Visions of Precision
    Neck: Necklace of Mystic Eidolons
Trinket: Epic Litany of the Dead
    Cloak: Mysterious Cloak (ML21)
Belt: Tier 3 Greensteel Belt with +45 HP, Displacement Clickies, DEX skill bonus and Smoke Screen, Belt of Braided Beards
Ring 1: Epic Elite Consuming Darkness
    Ring 2: Strange Tidings
Bracers: EE Steady Handed Armbands, Bracers of Twisting Shade
Gloves: Sanctified Gages (or fully upgraded Gauntlets of Immortality)
    Boots: Boots of Blessed Travels
Armor: TOEE armor with Epic Elemental Evil Set Bonus (or Epic Red Dragonscale Robe)
Quiver: Epic Elite Quiver of Poison
Offhand: TOEE shortsword or kama with Epic Elemental Evil Set Bonus and Riposte XII (spellcaster weapon) or elemental AOE damage (melee weapon) (or Celestia)

Some useful things to slot as augments:
False Life +40, +250 spellpoints, CHA +8, Ins. CHA +2, +8 INT, +2 Ins. INT, +8 STR, Good Luck +2, Globe of True Imperial Blood, Draconic Soul Gem, Golem's Heart, Sapphire of Crushing Wave Guard, +40 Sonic Resistance, Skills you might need.
For weapons: Meteoric Star Ruby, Deconstructor

    Gameplay Tips:
    - use Good Hope from the (Epic) Mask of Comedy for self buffed +2 (morale) attack and damage
    - use the guild ship buff from the hobgoblin Gurval for stacking +2 guild bonus to damage
    - cast Tenser's Transformation from scrolls (UMD 40) for 28 BAB and +4 (alchemical) DEX,CON,WIS
    - benefit from stat boosting pots for 1 hour of stacking +2 INT, DEX and WIS for more DPS (available from high silver Daily Dice Rolls, DDO Store and for Mysterious Remnants)
    - get +2 (alchemical) attack and damage for 10 minutes from Potions of Prowess (available from Commendations of Valor)
    - use Light Monk Finishers for self and group buffing/heals

I usually run in Water Stance when killing trash or when top notch saves are needed and switch to Mountain Stance and Archer's Focus + Damage Boost in Boss fights and/or when higher HP and PRR are needed. When you activate 10k you can quickly switch back to Water Stance to benefit from higher WIS and then go back to Mountain Stance.

Yes they are mostly the same. To get the most out of melee power you might want the full venomed blades line and since you will be less tanky Ki Shout is less useful. Of course you will still want the Ninja Spy capstone so 41 AP in Ninja spy are fixed.

The biggest differences lie in the feats (the other build uses Combat Expertise, Bulwark of Defense and Epic Mage Armor for max AC), Gear (with the other build you might still want the white dragon armor for max AC as well as Natural Armor on items etc. and probably the white dragon helm for the HP set bonus) and ED point distribution (in LD the other build can take Improved Combat Expertise for more PRR and in other EDs benefits more from high DEX and WIS because of higher AC).
Enhancements have always been personal preference to a degree.

Item wise if you don't have the Epic red dragon armor you might want to consider the Black Dragon Armor set. The +2 Artifact set bonus to damage does not stack with a planar focus set but at lvl 28 you will use the Epic Litany of the Dead and the bonus stacks with that one and you also get the 5% damage bonus vs. trash from Relentless Fury. I think the Epic Claw set bonus from the Red Fens also stacks with the Litany but it might be hard to get and fit into your gear setup.

A good advice for more damage came from Tilomere in my original Shuricannon thread. If you invest AP in the Harper Agent tree instead of the Shintao tree for 8 AP you can take Harper Enhancement (+1 damage) and the full Know the Angles Enhancement which gives you half the INT modifier to damage for 2 minutes for 15 spellpoints. With a +6 tome, +8 INT augment, +2 Ins. augment, +1 Except. INT, +2 from Epic Litany, +2 Completionist, +2 Ship buff and +2 from the occasional Inspire Excellence bard buff that can be quite a boost to damage. Also if you invest up to 11 AP you can also grab one more point of DEX and +2 damage vs. Evil from the cores. That would be +8 to +9 bonus damage per hit from the Harper Tree alone.

Since all of this damage is also multiplied by crits, ranged power, damage boost and Archer's Focus that is quite some amount of bonus DPS.

If you want to go even further you can drop CON during creation and put the starting ability points into INT to get even more damage from Know the Angles (but you will only benefit from this in Epic levels since you probably won't have spellpoints in heroics)

I added Skills and my actual Enhancement distribution to the OP.

Looks a fine variant to try on my very successful 'Cannon 1.0. It saved the bacon in a party with EE In The Belly of the Beast, thanks to Blinding Speed, defenses and star-spamming goodness. Combined with that solo Shroud and other solo EE runs, it's clearly my go-to build for power and survival. I'll try out this one in life #3.

@Spencerian: Great. I'm looking forward to see your opinion about this new version in one of your blog posts. Please note that most of the changes will take effect in epic levels (LD of course, Epic Feats and also INT damage from Know the Angles) so in heroic levels you will not see much of a difference.

I updated the OP with a few changes. I took the 8th point of DEX from enhancements from Harper tree tier 3 and added a few other things in the text.

Probably already known but i haven't seen this mentioned anywhere so far:
The (Epic) Mask of Comedy has a nice Good Hope clickie that provides a +2 morale bonus to weapon damage for 5 minutes (as well as other bonuses which don't stack with GH). It is easy to farm, BtA, has ML 5 so it is usable from early heroic levels on and since the bonus adds to base physical damage it is multiplied by ranged power, damage boost, archer's focus and crit multipliers in epic levels so it adds a nice bonus to DPS.

With the introduction of sometimes one-shotting monster champions it looks like ranged combat has become a bit more popular again since after the melee pass.
One of the changes of U24 Patch 1 makes Epic leveling with a spelltouched throwing weapon a bit easier.
    From the Release Notes:

    • The chance for epic monsters to ignore ability score damage has been reduced from 90% down to 33% on Epic Hard and 50% on Epic Elite. This chance remains zero percent on Epic Casual and Epic Normal

Since spelltouched weapons often have one stat drain ability on them and mostly add a second one as random proc this change makes them a bit more powerful. Also note that the Tier 5 Ninja Spy ability Crippling Strike benefits from this. So when in Sneak Attack range you have up to 3 stat drain abilities per shuriken! Combined with Life Stealing this can be fun.

Can you test how much it takes to strength 0 a fighter mob by CR? If it is like a druid dog which is also fighter class, it will be 1 strength growth per CR, plus 14 base. I'm not sure it will even be possible based on EE mob stat regen and the mob dying before hitting strength 0.

And would you happen to know if Ninja Spy crippling strike stacks with the rogue feat?

Not easy to test that. Since i do not have a STR damaging spelltouched shuriken i can only count on Crippling Strike and for that i have to be in SA range and have the monster Bluffed or otherwise not the aggro and on top of that count STR damage at the high attack speed. Trash monsters usually die a lot faster than that. Not sure if i have the patience to do that.

The great thing of spelltouched shuriken is that the stat damage works at full range and always on hit.

What i can see from my experiences so far is that i think Epic Monsters seem to have a max limit that you can drain an ability. They are not stunned when you reach that limit but the stat damage starts showing -0 STR, then when the monster regenerates it goes shortly back to normal STR damage and then again back to -0 STR. There was a limit of ability damage to boss monsters of 10 stat damage drain once. Not sure if they also applied that to epic monsters (I'm not even sure if this only applies to orange/red/purple nameds or only on EE or so). I will keep an eye on that during my next epic TR. The attack speed of shuriken is easily enough to keep the stat permanently down to that limit even though it regenerates. It still helps lowering saves, incoming damage and in case of CON damage lowering HP.

An interesting but probably already known fact is that the damage vulnerability from helpless monsters is applied to stat damage. This means that if a monster is helpless (150% damage) you do 3 STR damage with Crippling Strike and -4 STR with No Mercy and Sense Weakness active (instead of only 2). This is nice for players in Shiradi ED.

As for Ninja Spy Crippling Strike i didn't explicitly test it but my educated guess is no:

Crippling Strike: You gain the Rogue ability, Crippling Strike. (On Sneak Attack: 2 Strength damage.) Antirequisite: You cannot take this enhancement if you already possess the Crippling Strike feat.
This enhancement in fact even gives you the feat Crippling Strike and should not be able to be taken when you already have it from rogue.

With some form of helplessness, No Mercy and Sense Weakness you should have the same effect as with two Crippling Strike feats.

I forgot to add one more thing: If you throw spelltouched shuriken all the random Stat damage from one attack animation is the same (the same is true for Sneak Attack damage so i guess it is only rolled once per attack animation). So if the first attack applies -1 CON damage all the procs from Shuriken Expertise, Ninja II, Doublestrike/10k Stars also apply -1 CON damage. So with shuriken and a high proc rate you can drain one stat really fast.

Since crits are a big factor for the DPS of this build it can be useful to slot a Deconstructor augment vs. single high fortification targets (e.g. Edgar or Mentau in Epic Fleshmaker). Even if the monster is not a construct (so no additional 6d6 rust damage) the Destruction enchantment can squeeze another 15% armor piercing out of it so that you end up with 95% fort bypass.

Another change that has a positive influence on the build is the extension of the duration of stat potions from the store to lasting 1 hour (and stopping in public areas).
They are also more easily available now since they have been introduced as rewards for Mysterious Fragments from Monster Champions.
For a build that uses DEX, WIS and INT to increase damage like the Shuricannon that is a huge benefit.

Can this build work, starting off in Heroic, with no tomes, or augmented starting points? Will I be able to solo w/hireling with it?

    Hey Firewall!

This build really piqued my interest, however I don't have any form of high level, multi-TR'd, fully geared character. So, I made a first life character with the same stat distribution, (can't remember what I dropped because of 32 pt build) and so far it has been playing out quite nicely. My only question, and sorry if this was written in the OP and I missed it, is why the offhand Celestia? Do weapon effects in the offhand apply to shurikens? Thanks in advance!

Yes. Actually Spencerian did that with the old version of the build and posted the experiences in his blog.
The biggest issue is getting the named shuriken first. Snowstar is BtA so you can farm it with another character too. Shadowstar is relatively easy to get as STK endreward. Having good gear helps a lot in early levels. Stat-wise i would start with less WIS. There are some tips in the old thread of the old build if you have the patience to read through it. Basically the old and the new build differ play almost the same in heroics because feats start to differ from level 18 on and they have a bit different gear layout and enhancement distribution so most of the tips for the old build still apply to this one. Keep in mind that the biggest boost in power for this build will come in epic levels so it will not be that uber in heroics but still do fine. The old version of the build and its enhancement distribution will probably get you a bit easier through the early levels since it is focused on high AC, tanking and survivability.

Yes. Fiery Detonation and Greater Sunburst of Celestia apply to shuriken. In general some more (mostly passive) offhand effects like Seeker, Crippling, Tendon Slice and Sneak Attack bonuses also apply.

    Default Weapons

    Hi thanks for the build.

Can you please explain which shuriken you use at which levels. I am assuming at level 28 you are using a Thunder Forged shuriken but at lower levels i am finding that the snowstar seems to do the most damage. I even crafted a greensteel lightning 2 and it still doesnt do as much damage as snowstar. I have shadowstar and some generic shuriken but nothing else seems to do as much damage. I did pick up Morning Star to use against undead but thats the only other shuriken i use. Is there something else out there i am missing? Or is snowstar the go to weapon until epics?

It has been some time since i played heroics. I'm working on my triple Epic Completionist for quite a bit now and still no end in sight.

What i used/would recommend/might be optimal is the following:

Level 2: - Shadow Star (I think Tilomere posted that it was bugged and applied the Keen crit range twice. Not sure if that bug is still in place, which would make it better than Snowstar)

Level 8: - Snowstar ( very powerful if you have a Cannith Crafted Seeker VIII in your offhand)
    - use Cannith Crafted lootgen shuriken for DR beating

Level 12: - Holy, Good Burst, Good Blast, Greater Disruption Triple positive greensteel shuriken (this one is the best vs. undead even into early epics. It is far better in my opinion than the Morning Star)
    - Holy, Acid Burst, Acid Blast Mineral II shuriken vs. DR monsters (universal boss/DR beater)
if you have a more Sneak Attack damage focused build you can also craft a radiance II GS shuriken here

    Level 16: - Paralyzing Spelltouched Shuriken (ML16)

Level 20: - Improved Paralyzing Spelltouched Shuriken (ML20)

Level 24: - Thunderforged Tier 1 (Touch of Flames, 1st Degree Burns or Touch of Shadows depending on trash/bosses)
    - Improved Paralyzing Spelltouched Shuriken (ML24)
    - Life Stealing Spelltouched Shuriken (ML24)

    Level 26: - Thunderforged Tier 2 (Dragon's Edge)

    Level 28:
    Trash beater:
Touch of Flames, Dragons Edge, Mortal Fear with Meteoric Star Ruby slotted

    Boss beater:
vs. fire vulnerable bosses: 1st Degree Burns (for Vulnerability stacks), Dragon's Edge, Crippling Flames with Meteoric Star Ruby or Deconstructor (for -15% fortification debuff) slotted
vs. fire immune bosses: 1st Degree Burns (for Vulnerability stacks) or Touch of Shadows, Dragon's Edge, Burning Emptiness with Meteoric Star Ruby or Deconstructor (for -15% fortification debuff) slotted

    Other DPS tips:
~from Level 9 on use a ML11 Tier 3 Ring of the Stalker that you Cannith-Craft to ML 9 for Manslayer and Seeker IV on all shuriken
~in heroics use a Frozen Tunic to make monsters helpless for 150% damage
