    Default Symphony of Metal

    **This build was updated after actual play testing and a little more knowledge gained, Version 2 is available

    Flavor:

    Background:

    The discussion over a THF Bard came up in the War Dancer thread. Trying to leverage more ice and less dancing, the base idea came from that.

    Build goals:

    No Swashbuckling
    Two Handed Fighting
    EE Worthy Ice Capabilities without killing yourself
    Heavy Armor
    Relatively easy to customize to your style

    I admit, as much as I wanted to I could not keep her strength based. Instead you'll have enough for THF and rock solid heavy hitting in epic content...but you won't be bragging to the Barbarian over it.

    DPS calculations coming soon.

    For more information, there's a mini FAQ after the build.

    Original Build:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~
    Ummmm...INT?
    Yes INT. Know the Angles provides a bonus 1/2 INT modifier to tactical DCs, this works with the ice abilities. With insightful reflexes I gain a +4 over Dexterity
    But evasion!
    I found out on my Shadovar that in most (not all) EE content more PRR works better than evasion. Also, I don't have an option to take it unless you'd like to go Shadowdancer.
    Wizard instead of Sorc?
    I know traditionally Sorc would synergize better with Bard however, the INT bonus in this, plus the free metamagic feat opened up more possibilities. It gives you an option then to take Extend (a crowd pleaser because who doesn't love longer displacement) or Empower (bigger burst healing) or a slot back to take another combat feat. So the Wizard made the most sense.
    Why the heck is Wizard even in there?
    Eldritch Knight the 2nd Core grants another 5% reduction from ASF. This with Arcane Fluidity and an augment results in a 0% ASF. To date this is the only method I readily know of to actually put anything that arcane casts into heavy armor without a big risk.
    Why not INT to attack or CHA?
    I tend to run AP tight builds, which means every last AP has to serve a direct point and it has to be something that I cannot overcome (easily or cheaply) through other means. I can bolster my strength up without spending additional AP that might pull away from a build goal.
    My Firestarter has relatively low strength (until divine might hits) and doesn't have an issue hitting even when I forget to press the button (which oddly enough on my mouse it's right under my thumb...easy right?!)
    Mommy, where does the DPS come from?
    At your disposal is a wide variety of abilities designed to grant heavy amounts of DPS without super high strength. You'll have blitz, sense weakness, Know the Angles (insightful damage boost) and Mortal Fear. Along with massive amounts of Haste Boosts you'll be busy for a good long while swinging like a Tasmanian devil.
    Again...Drow?
    This toon has always been a Drow...like to keep it that way. More importantly for this build Drow served it best giving me cheaper access to a higher INT and CHA. If you don't like Drow...then you'll need enough STR for THF, fabulous CHA, great INT and you batter apply something that resembles CON.
    Tactician...what about Lasting Inspiration?
    Totally doable, and usually Lasting Inspiration is one of my fav epic feats but in this case I wanted every single last point of DC I could pull out of this build concept. However depending on what you run for epic content the +2 DCs may be good enough or still really awesome. I encourage you to tailor to your preferences.
    I want STR based!
    Go for it, but you will be short on the ICE effect DCs. Basically move all of the level ups into STR, not much else is going to change. You will lose -4 DCs to the ice attacks. If you drop the CHA or INT lower to bolster a base strength you'll lose even more DCs. On that route...we are probably talking about a whole different varient of the build and without utilizing the ice attacks heavily War Chanter feels a bit lacking, as if it's missing it's main focus.
    Can you post a more STR based version?
    I can...but not feeling a need for it right now. Maybe later...if you ask nicely.
    Did you totally sell out into the CHA based crowd?
    No. I ran a whole gamut of numbers and I couldn't argue that a much more heavy CHA worked better for the ice attack DCs. I also didn't go full out and everything into CHA, instead I found this interesting thing called balance.
    Well.............maybe just a diet coke of sell out then.
    There's more to swashbuckler tree than swashbuckling...what about this really cool feature?
    It's all trade offs and trade offs I couldnt' afford to make. I needed the extra INT out of Harper to bring it to an even number. I needed the DC bonuses out of Kensai and wanted even more action boosts. I dont' have lasting inspiration so anything I can do to make songs last longer (without giving up valuable twist slows) was important...if you drop heavy armor you can have 10 AP back which gets you Blow by Blow, Fast Movement and Doublestrike II; but then doesn't fill a goal of the build and you'll lose some pretty nice PRR. Then Wizard becomes useless and at that point you might just want to go with another build (I have several other ones in my signature).
    Wow! You write a lot!
    Tell me about it...but I enjoy it and thanks for reading!
    I have other question or suggestions!
    Let's talk ^^
    Good luck and game on!
    That is a fantastic take on Warchanter and I love it
    Interesting use of Eldritch Knight, too.
    Default Interesting!
    Nice video, although not really related but thank you anyway.
    Interesting concept which I may just have to try. do you have an idea of what equipment may work that is easily attainable, I find as an EU based player I just don't seem to be able to do many raids so make do with random loot mainly. Stuff that can be done through solo runs on EH would do?
    Think I have like epic emerald gaze and that's it.
    Thanks! It was a challenge to put it together and worth it.
    Let me know if you run this build, I'm always interested in knowing how she performs for other people ^^
    I like symphonic metal (Epica and Nighwish being other favorites) and with this build being all "heavy metals", it made sense. Also in a lyric sense it kind of fit the profile of the build ^^
    You might want to look into doing some trading or scanning the auction house for a few things but obtaining them shouldn't be too hard albeit time consuming for a few items.
    Here's a small breakdown and I hope it helps.
    The backstabber's gloves are essential for the improved deception and sneak attack bonuses. You can easily get EN backstabbers gloves by running the GH chain or usually available in the auction houses for relatively cheap. It doesn't matter what difficulty you run it on. However...any item with Improved Deception and sneak attack will work. Seal of house avithoul rings drop much more often now and are easier to farm for.
    Epic Orchard gear pops up in the rewards list, doesn't matter what difficulty and since there is no more Normal/Hard/Elite differences you should be able to do Orchard circuits to get what you are looking for.
    Luckily the Shadowscale Armor is relatively cheap to make you should be able to easily trade or purchase 100 shadow dragon scales total needed for the flawless version and since you run epics you should have no problems with the 480 comms of valor (if you are on G-Land, look me up and I'd be happy to help)
    Since you don't do much raiding by your own words find the biggest meanest great sword you can, preferably with a red augment slot to put in devotion. Otherwise the tier 2 thunder forge is somewhat on the easier side to manage...you'll need 400 ingots (lots of running around Thunderholme explorer will get you these...but it will take tons of time as the drops aren't that awesome), 300 comms of valor, 25 fire scales and 75 shadowscales total. Again because of "bountiful" means you should be able to get the ingots and scales for a good price in the auction house or via trade.
    Other Great Swords of note that are relatively easy to acquire (ie no raiding involved):
    Blade of Fury (Eyes of Stone and can be upgraded in the Cauldron of Sora Kell) -- personally I like Vampiric on this at heroic levels -- not sure how well it would hold up in epic but at heroric it's mad fun
    Hunter's Slayer from Study in Sable...EH version is not too far off from the EE so not too bad to handle
    Terror from the Mindsunder...this one is a bit tricky as you'll need the crystal discs to open the bonus room but doable -- if you upgrade it at the dreamforge it'll give you Deception, sadly no red augment
    Stunning -- Seal of House Dun'Robar has an option for a +10 and like the Avithoul ring the drop rates are up and the matron is really easy to get to or look for a Great Sword of stunning
    for healing amp, Iron Mitts out of Three Barrel Cove work well and you can farm for them in the slayer area (I personally got a pair of these and the boots form the explorer zone) but then you'll be hunting for that avithoul ring.
    Random Loot gen items or things available through in-game traders like GH augments
    INT, CHA and CON items +10 ideally, more preferred
    False Life (loot gen STR and False Life ring is in the build)
    Spell Point item
    Perform
    Heal item -- heal provides positive spell power so boosting that is helpful
    Devotion item or augment -- you can get up to 114 devotion augment (requires 1 commendation of heroism) at the GH augment traders otherwise the 90 devotion is available for cheaper
    Fortification
    Resistance
    Sheltering/PRR -- Up to +14 from the GH augment traders (again requires 1 comm of heorism) otherwise the +12 is cheap
    Deadly
    Speed
    Good luck/Fear Immunity/Blindness Ward -- for 20 tokens of the twelve at the Epic Trader in the Twelve
    Deathblock
    +15% Arcane Spell Failure -- auction house, random loot gen, trading but essential otherwise you won't be able to go heavy armor
    If you have other questions or need more help, please ask. Again if you're on G-Land I'm very happy to help you out. Bards gotta watch out for each other
    Good luck and game on!
    and as an FYI weapon deception stacks with item deception so you will get a double deception bonus from this combination
    I'm impressed; this is a clever build.
    I had been thinking along the lines of Bard 15 / Fighter 4 + 1 and using Medium Armor. ASF would be eliminated via Warchanter (tier 4 "Armorer", 2 AP). You lose base PRR/MRR versus Heavy Armor, but then you can pick up Defensive Stance from Stalwart Defender to get more back than you lose. With BAB 18 at cap on this build you have a base of 69 PRR and 45 MRR. The 15/4/1 with Medium Armor (46/30) + Defensive Stance (10/10) + Durable Defense (15/15) has 71 PRR and 55 MRR. Mitigating the ASF via Drow and EK costs 10 AP versus 8 AP for WC Armorer and Stalwart. The variant I'm suggesting does have higher threat which may be a negative. EK also grants Doublestrike and the ability to dump SP into DPS via its toggle and cleave. However my idea loses the DR from Heavy Shadowscale, which is a fairly significant no-no.
    I think mine would be easier to level (full PRR/MRR w/no ASF as early as level 8), but yours is definitely the stronger build at cap.
    I believe Deception on a weapon would stack with one source of Deception on gear but two weapons or two gear pieces wouldn't.
    There should be some pretty convincing test hidden somewhere in the rogue forums.
    Don't know how important is sonic for non Swashbuckler, Battlerager + Ethereal Bracers + Diadem is pretty good for a melee.
    I'd take 12 Double Strike, 3 dex and 4 saves over 3 con any day.
    Can even ditch 11 Int ring, plenty of slots for Wizardry and Perform, maybe even Tod ring or Combat Mastery Dun Robar ( don't see that and Dodge anywhere - should be able to get 6% with augment and guild buff even in TF heavy no ? ).
    i learned something today, i had always assumed that the +3 resistance from balance of land and sky was the same type as a normal item and wouldn't stack. will have to run some shrouds...
    Medium armor works well in heroics, there's no argument there. Yes, it would be a bit easier to level and a great idea if you just want the Bard past life and move on to the next life. You could just simply run a 16/4 split and get a +1 DC to the ice effects, +1 to Reflex and Will saves, another BAB and 6th level spells.
    I would be very careful with the higher threat, especially with champions. If you go human you can get back that missing feat from Wizard and it would even out. Though you'll have lower INT and CHA but with a boom to STR...well...you don't have to worry about saves if everything is dead.
    Let me know if you go this route...be interested in hearing all about it.
    I'll have to look for that information but I've noticed a big uptick in deception procs with the dragon masque on my other melee toons.
    The bracers is a good call though another 4 to saves is always helpful even at a loss of around 42 hitpoints...which is the trade off. By going diadem you'll lose the deception, take a -2 on Sneak Attacks but it's a nice slot consolidator for the CHA and INT. Also since I go insightful reflexes the Dex isn't doing much for the greater good.
    I'd go with heal amp in that ToD ring...more is good oh and make it the Warchanter ring...cause you know, you are one!
    I like your gear suggestions and admit that gear tends to be a weakness of mine. Thanks!
    If you have other questions or need more help, please ask. Again if you're on G-Land I'm very happy to help you out. Bards gotta watch out for each other
    Good luck and game on![/QUOTE]
    Thanks for the equipment list, its the thing I struggle with the most. Play time is limited so I prefer to play with what I have that farm endlessly. I am actually on G-land (Tymout and Tymkul mostly) so I will keep an eye out for you, thanks for the offer of help!
    Looks like I have a few builds that will need gear re-evaluations.
    Learned something cool today and thank you for posting that ^^
    When i made my warchanter i did want heavy armor but had to settle for medium, nicely done how you got all that arcane spell failure to accomplish it
    Im running a Cha based PDK, i wanted to trap so settled on 15bard/3fighter/2arty, SWF with bastard swords and rune arm, i took knives eternal when i got my 20th MoD
    Since the warchanter changes i think the Freezer builds i played have become my favourites
