Data center costs on the east coast are double or triple that of Las Vegas and the infrastructure is often much older.

This was probably eliminated because they actually want to reduce the data in their system. There are a LOT of accounts that are many many years old that have not played in a very long time. This process creates choice and makes the data clean(er). And it frees up names.

So they could play with the EU group that plays 9 hours later than them at your stated slightly worse ping OR they could play with everyone from the US who speaks English and plays at the same normal time they play at with a slightly better ping. And I'm playing mind games and not speaking...
