One should consider the very very real possibility that the decrease in lag which happened very recently has a direct correlation to the decrease in players and not so much correlated with removing rocks, hirelings and garbage collection routines.
Ya think?

Data shows a spike in early Oct down to 3425 log-ins as of this morning.
The early month spike (and subsequant decline) is from players doing transfers.

Steam is a bad data source for several reasons but the most important one is that DDO is no longer fully supported by Steam. I had to go off the platform and reinstall as a stand-alone when I bought Myth Drannor because the MD x-pac was not supported under the Steam framework.

I figured it was a fiscal thing with SSG not wanting to split sales with Steam any more.
I use steam and had no issues purchasing Myth Drannor from the DDO shop, having it applied to my account or playing the content when it dropped.

All the no-lag threads I read have people reporting in quite high login numbers (i.e. 1000+ on a server) while lag was low.

You are reasoning that Moonsea is a Ghosttown based on the lfm panel?
What is with all the groups that are already full and don't display?
What is with the groups that form diffrently not with the help of the lfm board?
Why are raid or epic lfms significant in displaying the population?

The sources displayed in this whole thread are dubious at best to form a conclusion for the subject OP wanted to show.

Cheers,
Titus
I was on during prime time Friday for three hours... Yeah It was dead.

Until the last week or two, I've never had 3 raid nights in a row with basically no lag, including Hunt and Threats.

I have logged into around 40 characters over the last few months. Because I had to transfer all my characters.

Then Ive logged into them all again to move gear around as I consolidated across all servers.

All my friends have done the same. And I bet there are many who had hundreds of characters to move around.

Its the next month or 2 which will tell the story.

It would be much easier to judge if we could see unique account logins. My bet is that has slowly dropped away over the last month or 2.

I think you're right, by Jan the 90 day block will more accurately reflect how many characters are being used (ie playable, mule etc)

The real question isn't how many people are playing DDO, it's "How many active paying VIP subs are there?" That will determine the longevity of this game. Without new paying players, DDO is doomed to a slow death, and I don't see that many new players, much less paying ones.

I also use this indie site to track DDO's activity. down 20% in Oct and down 69% from Sept.

The numbers don't lie no matter where you source it from. TBH I'm actually thinking Jan 26 is when future game development is questionable & is stopped. If not halted at the very least it will be bare bones minimum, Of course I hope Im wrong...

Op's original post used this website as a basis for declining player numbers. I talked about it in my earlier post that these numbers don't make a lot of sense in terms of playing the game over the last year that this data is presented.

Using the way back machine(only one day could be picked sadly) we can see the populations hovered around 1,600 average player count over 30 days via ddoaudit.
Currently ddoaudit has around 1.900 average player count over the past month.
