13 Rogue/6 Monk/1 Fighter aka "Ninjassin with a Bird"

This is my first post on the forums. I'm going to try my best to deliver all relevant information needed to get some feedback and insights on the build. So here goes...

I've always loved Monk and Ninja Spy tree in particular, but it has been kind of bad for a long time, so when I saw the buffs, I had to make a build at least using some of the Ninja Spy elements. Originally, the build was supposed to be 18/1/1 because they added the crit profile bonus to core4 of Ninja Spy but after some theory crafting, I decided to just take a dip into the Ninja Spy and take the unique abilities from it. Although this is a 13 Rogue no rogue tree has been utilized, it is only for trapping, lots of skill points, sneak die and 2 special abilities.

The idea of the build is to be as sneaky as possible, make the best use out of sneak attack and assassinate attacks while still being able to hold my own if swarmed by enemies with the high Dodge, Saves and some utility abilities such as Flash Bang and Coordinated Strike. Build is without gear, just because I don't know yet what I'm going to use fully. Enjoy the build and hope to get as much feedback as possible, good and the bad!

Some key points:
  • Wis to attack and dmg
  • Ocean Stance for more Wis
  • Utilizing assassinate bonuses and Wis for DCs
  • Trapper
  • Using daggers (possibly kukris later on because of the better crit profile)
  • Build hits 100% off-hand strike
  • Falconry Tier 5 very convenient over Ninja Spy because you get access to it immediately. Rest of monk levels are taken later on to reach 5 which is needed for Tier 5's.
  • (Will add more as I update the build)

I think the 18/1/1 split will be better for the crit multi and you get all the forms feats for free.
Kukris beat out daggers unless daggers are named with expanded profile; none like that exist at endgame. 18 ninja crit multi won’t stack with the vistani though so I see your point.

I am not sure you should be in SD; seems redundant with shadow fade.

Perfect Pinnacle from Invitation to Dinner (farm it from optional chest) has some awesome effects. In fire stance you blind stuff like crazy and in fire you get an extra crit multi on 19-20. So maybe run in GMoF and use Fury as second tree—you will have to see how this plays out since you will be doing different things/stances if trash or boss.

I am a dedicated stealth player so love stealth builds. For solo stealth play you need 1) noisemakers 2) some way of separating out and eliminating reapers 3) some means of becoming strong enough to drop red names. 1) is easy; even one rogue can allow this although younwould need to burn 2 more feats. 2) is easiest in Fury—a high bluff swap item can let you pull a reaper and then Fury smack them—chain the right special attacks of course and switch to fire to do it for extra adrenaline damage especially if you can Fist of Iron it (Fist of Iron + fire stance + adrenaline will have you one-shotting mobs.) 18 ninja will get you the Dummy core which is silly fun too and helps you with red names and tough situations.

I have not gone monk in a while but with Vistani integrating kukris, ninjas have become exciting to me. Your other option is a Brush Hook ninja but that would be tier 5 ninja (leveling only really, not endgame anymore) and not bothering with vistani. Personally I would do Vistani do capstone, go kukri, dex based, dump the rest in ninja and with remaining points you take FvS for battle trance. Dex based will be sneakier.

I suppose the above split can take tier 5 ninja and push the kukris to 14-20 with vistani capstone, get maxed doublestrike easily. I wonder how a fury adrenaline hit works with touch of death…but you would not have AP to spend anywhere else.

This ignores the whole Razorclaw handwrap option.

I think crit multi is the same if I go 18 monk or as I'm going now. You get +1 to threat range from Ninja Spy Tier 5, and +1 multi from core4 at 18. And with this build I get both from core4 Vistani tree. I believe I can also go for kukris with my build because I have the proficiency from fighter lvl. Kukri doesn't get +1 to threat range from core 4 Vistani, so daggers are better with my current build. Maybe if I went in some other tree where the threat range applies for kukris as well like Kensei or Ninja Spy. Something I will for sure look into once I TR and figure out what the best build split is for that option. If you have any suggestions I'm all ears:D

Regarding the ED, I went SD just because I didn't really know where to go so I just went with it, but I like the GMoF idea. GMoF is probably also better because I took Discipline feat, which gets me pretty good bonuses from GMoF cores.

Stance wise I'm currently running in Ocean stance for extra wis for more dmg and I like more Dodge also. I'm gonna experiment a bit with other ones for sure.

Tell me more about the vistani kukri idea with ninja spy. Is that the same as I wrote above? Crit profile applies for kukris as well from Ninja tree right? I could've gone Ninja Tier 5's in this build but it's very awkward point split after that. This is the best I managed to split. Falconry Tier 5's because I would get Ninja very late because I take Monk lvl 6 very late... Also I got to squeeze in some good Vistani stuff this way, and a few unique stuff from Ninja tree.

Went 13 rogue so I get a lot of skill points, sneak dmg, trap saves and 2 special abilities. I'm not sure how worth that is but I kind of like having a lot of skills at high value. Sneak die would be higher probably with the Ninja tree, same with doublestrike but I feel like this build is more rounded up and is more versatile. I like that I have utility abilities such as blinds, knockdowns and dazes, while still having decently high sneak dmg.

Anyways, thanks for the input, always appreciate it! If you have and build ideas such as this, be sure to hit me up, I'm a fellow ninja playstyle enjoyer:D

Well daggers have a lousy crit profile. With vistani you will have 17-20/3 (assuming Improved crit feat). Some named daggers will extend that better, like the Nightforged or Drow dagger. Kukris in Vistani get 15-20/3. With tier 5 ninja, daggers will not get anything but the kukris will. It is not much—another +1 so 14-20/3. But 14-30/3 is a big difference from 17-20/3. Vistani sought to improve this with Vendetta in its tier 5…

However the basic kukri profile in Vistani is solid enough so if you are really committed to Falconry then you are good (1 point in assassin gives you kukri proficiency too fyi). There are many viable
ninja options since Knight’s Training and WSS but kukri/vistani is easier on the feats, harder on the AP. I suppose you could SWF and get another 20 MP out of vistani but I am not sure if you want to effectively eliminate handwrap use.

Long swords are another option with WSS and Knight’s Training; there is stuff i GMoF that lets you skip some of the pre-reqs if you look into it and want to wait until then. Long swords have a better base damage then little kukris but the vistani tree really buffs the kukris. It comes down to AP—Longswords with KT are 17-20/3, but you could use Oathblades for 15-20/3 for epic reincarnations anyway. Almost all melees take the Vistani capstone for the buffs (works with any weapon though not WAI) so in the end I suggest you go kukri. That is 41 AP burned in Vistani though and leaves little for ninja and falconry. So you need to figure out what you want to do.

I have 17-20/x2 at the moment with Imp. Crit feat with daggers, and will be 16-20/x3 total with core4 Vistani ench. Kukris would be better for sure with the 15-20/x3, so I will probably get a pair of Midnight Greetings and try those out. I am not the best at calculating what the best option for crit profile is honestly, I'm just messing around a bit and try to make a fun build.

Regarding longswords, that is an idea I like. I was thinking of playing longsword Ninja Spy with dual longswords with Knight's and WSS, and then swapping out WSS when I get centered with them from GMoF. Also I have 2 Oathblades ready to go and I like them, great weapon for epic leveling.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the information here honestly, I need to work this out in builder:p Borderline what you are saying is that kukris should be better on my current build? (assuming I get Midnight Greetings). To my understanding, they are better because they get +3 out of Improved Crit feat, while daggers get +2.

Edit: I'm looking on DDO wiki how many daggers and kukris there are. Seems to me that there are far better and more useful daggers than kukris.

For leveling, there are many named daggers with improved critical profiles, even up in epics. At end game the weapons fall relatively to their base stats. At that point kukris are superior. But it all depends on what you are trying to do. If you just want to do epics and reincarnate a couple of times, then any build will do.
I recommend you maximize how a build will function in endgame reaper because it is there that there are massive amounts of reaper points. I neglected to do this for a long time and am now stuck playing catchup. Even doing so for just a few lives makes a big difference in the long run as you will have a static mass of reaper points that will easily aid you in heroics and even epics with hp bonuses, stat boosts, melee/ranged/spell power etc. I do not like reaper but it is where the game is right now.
Vistani is often used by melees for the captstone since it is a big buff and all weapons seem to benefit from the attack speed boost, even if not WAI. Taking capstones uses 41 AP though so it limits a lot.
Longswords have a superior base damage and Oathblades an even better one.

I decided to get Epic Midnight Greetings when I hit 20, and try out kukris. My crit profile will be 15-20/x3. Not quite 14-20/x3 but something to look for in the next life. I think with 15-20, build will be strong as well, I put a lot of value into Falconry utility attacks, trips, blinds and extra damage to helpless, not to mention execute. In groups build should be really strong. With a bit of gear farming and filigrees, build has a lot of potential I feel like.

Also, I should probably work out a build with this split or similar that actually uses daggers with the Assassin tree. They get dagger to the same crit profile as kukris, if not higher.

Idea for the next life for now will be 18 Monk/1 FvS/1 Warlock. Go Ninja tier 5 with vistani for 14-20/x3, FvS trance and warlock for arcane warrior with aura.

Assassin knife spec, like the bard swashing, gives daggers 15-20/3 (assuming ic pierce). It is the vistani boost that comes up lesser. But then Vistani has Vendetta.

Consider that even without vistani, Midnight Greetings is a centering weapon.

If you are looking for a niche ninja slashing weapon for tier 5 ninja, don’t forget Brush Hooks. I am not sure if they made the W weapon pass, but their crit profile and DR breaking for late heroics is excellent. A normal one is easy to get too as they often appear in the Druid arc end list, or people dump them in the AH.

If you are using the Fury of the Wild epic strike, consider how to boost up crit multipliers. A monk can pair it with Fist of iron (+1), master of forms minimum fire stance (+1), maybe even Vendetta (+1), along with weapon buffs from trees like you are doing. You can see some fun numbers soar, makes players feel happy to get 85K damage on a single hit.

That is some really nice input, thanks for letting me know!

I didn't even know Midnight Greetings are centering by default. But still, it gives +1 W on damage (+10% damage now) even with kukris so it's still worth 2 points.
