64bit client crashes on Lolth Cutscene

For a couple years now every time I trigger the cutscene when collecting end reward for Spinner of shadows my game client crashes if am running 64 bit. The work around for me is after it crashes when I reopen the client I switch to 32 bit client, this let me get through the cut scence and collect end reward. After that I log off and switch back to 64 bit client. This is the only issue I ran into running 64 bit client.

I don't run Spinner of shadows that often so I just been ignoring the issue for years now but figure I post here in case someone knows a quick fix that don't involves me completely deleting DDO off my computer and reinstalling.

I running 64 bit windows 10 Pro

Is it possible that your video file for that cutscene is corrupted? I know this can happen with corrupted loading screens.

I've run that cutscene on the 64bit client several times with no issue. I'd check your video drivers first and see if an update is available.

I done many gpu driver updates since this issue started so doubt that the issue. currupted video file possiable but wonder why it plays fine when client set too 32 bit.

Interesting - I had that same specific issue for a long time after moving to 64-bit as well, but I haven't had it for the last few times I've done the chain so was pleased it was fixed. I didn't actively do anything to try and fix it though (including not reinstalling DDO), so I can't help you but maybe it'll go away on its own for you too eventually...

What's the directx version setting in the game options?

I would try dropping the directx down a notch just to see if that's the cause to isolate. Another thing, that cutscene video has some large sound to it, could be a crash in a sound driver... instead of a graphics card...

ps there's always the event log maybe...

Possible causes:
Driver incompatibility
Ram corruption/stability
Insufficient ram
Insufficient Vram
Audio driver issue
A display conflict with another program
Corrupt game files
Antivirus interference

Steps for troubleshooting:
Verify game files.
Clean‑install GPU drivers.
Disable all overlays and antivirus, then retest.
Lower resolution/texture settings and close other apps.
Test audio by changing default playback device.

If crash is still occurring check Windows Event Viewer after the crash. If the faulting module is a system DLL (like a media foundation or GPU driver DLL), it's likely a 64-bit driver/OS issue rather than a game bug.

This is how I confirm the integrity of my Windows 11 system. Run these in administrator mode.
sfc /scannow
dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Spent more time then I wanted to after work trying things

The error log clearly shows is crashing when it try to run binkw64.dll so I went through the rabbit hole of everything that could cause a issues

C++ run times updated
DirectX 9 old runtimes
Disable any firewalls
Clean drivers
Deleting binkw64.dll letting it download
Running in compatibility mode the 64 bit client
changing sound setting to a lower bit
permissions to folder

Still crashing

When reading about binkw64.dll, the article mentioned that there is a 32bit and a 64bit version. I also found this…

“BinkW64.DLL is a video codec used by many PC games to play in-game cutscenes and videos; placing it in the game's application folder rather than system directories often resolves playback errors. Some games require the file to be in the game's bin folder to avoid crashes after videos finish playing.”

So this is a memory access violation which means it's one of two issues.
1st, and least likely, is you have a section of your DRAM that has failed. Super rare issue and probably not it.
2nd, and most likely is you have another program protecting memory that ddo is trying to access.

I'm assuming you're using Win 11 so there are a few steps to try.

Have you recently installed or used any apps that add overlays, antivirus monitoring, or browser add-ons that run system-wide? These often inject DLLs into browsers and games, which can trigger memory violations.
Think things like fps overlays, game overlays, new anti virus application, etc. Something that runs system wide all the time.
If so, try disabling those programs and running DDO then.

Do you have a cpu with more than 12 cores? If so it's possible the memory is being assigned where it can't be read.
Try setting a cpu affinity for DDO.
Open Task Manager
navigate to the Details tab
right-click DDO
select Set Affinity to cpu 0 or cpu 1.

Let me know if either of these works.

I tried the Affinity change using cmd lines earlier but just to double check I used the task manager method you listed and still crashing. This been a problem for years now. It could be other software but I dont have the patience to go through all that especially since I use computer a lot for none gaming and have my workflow setup the way I want and everything works fine. Fixing this is just not that important. I thought sound was extremely likely but even disabling sound completely in user file did not resolve issue.

I starting to think it just not going to ever work on this particular computer. I use this computer for work so it built as a workstation not gaming even through it game fine when am not working.

It not just my core count which I do have a lot more than 12 (32 cores, 64 threads) but I also got quad channel memory 128GB (32gbx4), Geforce 3090( 24 GB of memory). Might be just a little too confusing for DDO architecture in this case.

Thank for attempting to help me through. If there other things to try that don't involve messing with other software install I give it a try.

Other things tried already since I last responded
Turning off Hardware Gpu scheduling
Disable Data Execution Prevention (DEP) for DDO

Well, there is always the option of deleting the ddo_motu_cinematic.bik file, but you'll have to do that every time you start the game because it will redownload.
Well, at least have to delete it every time you turn the quest in.

Edit: Actually, you could just rename it before you turn it in, then revert the name with ctrl+z afterward, then you wouldn't need to redownload it.

Last thing I can think of is disabling kernel-mode hardware-enforced stack protection, but not sure if that's the greatest idea.
If you want to try it out.
Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Device Security > Core isolation

If that doesn't work I'm stumped.
