A very controversial suggestion.

I know very few people will agree with me, but I believe DDO needs an endurance-based resource system.

For Martials, this would take the form of an endurance bar that is consumed by attacking, sprinting, and other physically demanding actions. The same concept would apply to Casters, except that magical actions would consume mana while physical actions consume endurance. Both resources would regenerate naturally over time, allowing players to recover between encounters without making shrines a requirement. (Especially for newer players)

The immediate effect would be to slow the current "zerg everything" playstyle without simply inflating monster hit points or adding yet another layer of artificial penalties to compensate. At the same time, Casters would regain the ability to unleash full burst damage when the situation demands it, then recover between encounters without being shackled to shrine placement. While in doing so, much of the justification for the ever-increasing Nerfs / Penalties against Casters simply disappears.

More importantly, it would bring back something that DDO has steadily lost over the years: Class Interdependence.

Players would once again need to work together, covering teammates while they recover instead of expecting everyone to maintain maximum damage output indefinitely. It would encourage groups to think about party composition instead of stacking nothing but the highest-DPS builds available. Parties built entirely around melee, or ranged damage would quickly discover that sacrificing support, crowd control, and survivability comes with real consequences.

While all that may sound like a step backward to some people. I see it as a return to what originally made DDO stand out from other MMOs: players filling complementary roles instead of every character trying to do everything all the time. (Often solo)

Side note: Yes, I know that variations of this idea have been proposed before. Under normal circumstances I'd probably agree that it would be too radical of a change. However, looking at the current state of the game and at SSG's historical reluctance to roll back bad design decisions, I honestly don't see a better path forward. Continuing to pile new systems and penalties on top of old mistakes isn't fixing the underlying problem. It's only making the game more and more convoluted while solving nothing.

Your creative comments and suggestions are welcome!

(Oh and please VOTE)

Cheers!

Would apply to casters too I expect so they'd have double bubble problems to solve. 👍

I like this because it adds a potentially interesting tactical challenge. Not because I think it will help balance issues.

I main a melee, and I see magic missiles fly by me and vaporize targets before I am in range of the target all the time in both high and low reaper content.

Wouldn’t stamina be dependent on Strength?

Do you really want another nerf to poor, weak casters? It would also mean no one woujd ever play any style that wasn’t STR to hit and damage.

This proposal most likely wouldn't change your experience. Odds are it might deepen your team-play as all classes would need to work together. Something that rarely happens today.

According to 5e, Stamina is equal to Character total class level plus their constitution modifier plus their proficiency bonus.

So things like feats, abilities and gearing would play a big part. Just like everything else in DDO.

You don't have to change all the other classes and implement new mechanics for everyone else to balance this. Also this is a totally different problem from the zerg problem that won't be fixed with an endurance system.
Apparently we do need to change things as the Dev's are just blindly digging the hole deeper with each passing update.

If you don't believe me, just mossy over to the U80 & 81 threads and take it all in. I'm sure you'll soon discover that after two updates, all Casters really have to show for it is the dire need to Tetris all their end game gear. And for what, a handful of extra DC points, more convoluted feat taxes, and changes to item effects that now Nerf abilities that used to proc from spell casting? The only positive changes that came from those updates were the DPS gains that Martials received. Changes that further widen the gulf between Casters and Martial DPS.

Even if Martials are in denial, the Endurance system is very much needed. Failing to make significant changes will result in half of the classes being unplayable past Heroics. Which they already are if your push-raiding or running high reaper content.

it is the worst idea I have ever seen on the forums, and totally negates some classes actually charge up during combat. It would kill the game dead.
It is so badly thought out on so many levels that I can only see your original post as a troll post designed to harm the game.
Game development is not your forte.

C+. You make a ridiculous suggestion that of course everyone will say is stupid and unfun so you can then equate it to currently playing a caster. It is a different way to complain about casters, but don't think it is very effective. Better luck on the next one.

Agreed, the motivations for this thread are suspect at best, and the thread is clearly designed to cause fighting and disruption rather than be an actual suggestion. Thread closed.
