Are handwraps just worse than other options?

Id also consider levelling a thrower build given Im in a static group so wouldnt be as concerned with lower DPS, while knowing Id be completely survivable.
Thrower build leveling was a very poor experience. Prepare to feel like you're being carried :( Thrower could really use it's own tree or archetype.

Maybe some kind of universal "Jester" or "Carnival" tree that focused on thrower/greatclub/acrobat?

Heh, never play a thrower sub-cap or even at cap if not maximum geared. Throwers require top stats. Your DPS will be lower than a hire. Your team will crack jokes about it being easier to carry you as a stone, only it won't only be a joke.

I level my thrower as INQuisitive and then flip gear to thrower at cap. The builds are nearly identical with just a couple feat-flips to transition to real thrower. INQ is by far the premier ranged style sub-cap; it beats all the others by a wide margin from L1 to L28 and then everything else passes it IF you have optimal gear.

If you want decent performance for little to no effort, INQ will deliver that even at cap. I don't think the other styles can do as well on budget.
