Arti/Rogue question

Is there any benefit other than evasion, in doing the arti/rogue split? I am playing artificer for the first time and I was wondering whether or not I should stay pure arti or do the rogue split. If so, how many levels of rogue should I have for maximum benefit of multiclassing? I've never multiclassed before. I am currently lvl 12 arti

From my experience, if you are doing a xbow arty a 2lvl rogue dip is definitely worth it: most likely you are investing mostly in the inquisitive tree, and you'll get the capstone there, so missing arti lvl20 is basically no loss at all. On the other hand, the 2 lvl rogue dip gives you evasion (which is excellent, since I assume you have insightful reflexes so you'll save basically 19/20 rolls), plus some sneak attack dices which is always good.

In conclusion, if you are doing an inquisitive arti, I honestly see no reason to prefer 19&20 in arti over 2 lvls in rogue :)

If you're going to splash Rogue, then 2 levels is the sweet spot:

1. You get Evasion. As long as you take the Insightful Reflexes, you'll have a serviceable Reflex score. Insightful Reflexes adds your Intelligence modifier to your Reflex Saves instead of your Dexterity modifier.

2. Spend at least 8 AP in the Assassin tree for +3 imbue die, and +1 Sneak Attack Dice. You can get another two Sneak Attack Dice if you spend another 4 AP.

Remember, you'll need to be in either Cloth or Light armor for Evasion to function. If you're a Warforged, then that means you cannot take the Adamantine Body feat.

Other possibility if you wanna stay pure arti, you can have evasion at epic levels via Shadowdancer Core ability.

I would strongly advise against multiclassing now that you are 12 levels in. Stick with pure Artificer and next life around use a character planner to plan your multiclassed life. It is far easier to fix mistakes in a planner than a toon on the live servers. Since you have said you have never multiclassed before then I strongly advise you to stay pure this time around :) but you do you :)88

As for the split, it all depends on what you are actually building (hence needing a planner). Mostly though people splash for the easy Evasion (2 Rogue levels) but Rogues also gain Sneak Attack at uneven levels (1, 3, 5 etc).

While it is in general true that, if you are planning to splash some rogue levels in your build, it is better to do so at the beginning of your life so that you can enjoy the larger AP pool to spend at lvl 1, this is not something build-breaking. Sure, you would get a few additional APs to spend here and there, but if you don't care about min/max-ing everything or planning to stay at cap for long with a super-optimized build, I still think that the advantages of taking those 2 rogue lvls at some point between 13 and 20 against going full-arti (particularly if he is using inquisitive as his main tree) are well worth it.

Is it the best way to do it? No. Is it still worth doing it? Definitely, imho :)

You take 2 rogue levels for +3 imbue and a little sneak dice.
If you take rogue early, you get evasion early.
Otherwise you can get evasion at lvl23 with shadowdancer.

It will cost you 2 lvl6 spell slots which are very good and an arti bonus feat.

Inquisitive is probably better off with those 2 rogue levels.

If you want the true artificer repeater experience stay pure and go macrotechnic too.
