Audio crash fix - testing a work around

If you have the audio crash bug, I'd appreciate it you could check this setting on your computer in your control panel>sound>your audio output>properties>advanced tabs. See if you're at 16bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality) and if so change it to 16bit, 48000 Hz (DVD quality). If your game is already running, reboot it. See if it still crashes from the typical quests/locations that are bugged with audio (Dread, Smash & Burn, etc.). I don't know if this will or won't help any given setup, just testing/passing along a potential solution.

If you're already running at 16bit, 48000 Hz (DVD quality) and crashing, say so here. If it stops your crashing or doesn't stop your crashing, post with your results. Thanks.

Mine is set at 24 bit, 48000Hz (Studio Quality) and I don't have any issues with the raptor sounds. I have a friend who does have issues with the raptors, so will ask him to test.

Doing the reverse doesn't cause my game to crash. But I've heard it mentioned this may help; so it'll be interesting to see feedback on results from those with the audio crash bug.

I have adjusted my sound settings to run at 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) and I have yet to experience crashing from raptor sounds where I usually have issues. I was previously running at 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality).

Thank you for this Sardonic, I can finally enjoy the game sounds for an expansion I spent money on.

I'll also start the trend ... SSG should start sending you compensation for doing their job for them :)

No audio crash bug here (I've actually only rarely had a crash) but almost (90%+) always my lag comes when or immediately after audio (not music) starts to play.

Hope this helps. :)

No clue if changing that will have an effect on anything else. Only thing I know of is potentially stopping the "raptor" sound crash (and being a lot easier to do than manually swapping OpenAL files every patch); but good luck and it'll be interesting if you notice any other effects.

Checked my settings. I was on 32-bit 44100hz with constant crashing w/raptor sounds. Switching to 32-bit 48000hz and ZERO crashes. Tested in Eyeknowwhodunit and out in IoD wilderness. You can ask anyone in my stream how much I complained about that disconnect. I'll continue with this and see if it indeed fixes the issue for me.

Used to get raptor crash constant. But since the latest update they did with the sound it hasn't crashed once.
Mine already matched the settings you posted in the screenshot - but not sure if a Windows update fixed it or what.

Edit: I also used to crash while in IoD quest public zone and inside Skeletons in the Closet with the sound on. No longer

It's funny you mention it: I've had the audio lag as well (but no crash). My solution so far has been to turn off the volume on specific sounds. I leave on all sounds except sound effects volume and ui volume and it seemed to fix it. You may want to experiment with turning off various volume settings until you can get rid of the audio lag then start turning them back on until you can isolate what's causing the lag. A good quest for testing lag is "The Devils to Pay" if you have Vecna. I always got sound lag fighting that boss.

Note: this is running DDO in Wine 64-bit not Windows.

Windows 10: My wireless JBL Tune 510BT headphones setting only has 44k options, the speakers option is already at 48k. When using the headphones, I crash at raptor combat, just tested twice in Isle of Dread wilderness. Anyways, good job that you are trying to get to the bottom of this!

So the 44k headphones crash  (that's a shame there's no 48k option for them), does it run fine with your 48k speakers as an output choice?

I'm using an AV Receiver (connected via HDMI) and have never experienced this crash.

I've just tested 16 bit 44khz without a crash (normally I have this set to 24 bit 192khz) so I suspect it's not necessarily the default format setting, it's possible it's an issue converting from one sample rate to another for some devices. I can test more settings later if that would help?

I wonder if the offending sound file is some super high quality and the crash is caused by the strain of having to sample it down.

Could be that or something else odd about the raptor (any other mob causing crashes? IDK) sound file that could be an issue at that sound setting with some hardware.

Any correlation in the output device being bluetooth? As Tune 510BT is a Bluetooth model and using the same sample rate/bitrate as it over HDMI didn't experience the same issue.

Is it a 100% chance that if the sound plays a crash happens?

I've heard it happens on non-bluetooth setups too (but it's all 3rd party chatter); so it could be related to the audio chipsets involved? IDK for certain what are the underlying conditions that cause some folks to crash and others not to on the hardware side.
