Audio crash fix - testing a work around

ASUS ROG ZEPHYRUS G14 GA401QE NVIDIA RTX 3050

Smart Amp Technology
Audio by Dolby Atmos
AI noise-canceling technology
Built-in array microphone
2x 0.7W tweeter
2x 2.5W speaker with Smart Amp Technology

I cant realy find more information about the sound manufacturer. Same as wormfood I cant change to a different setting, nothing else is available. Strangely in device manager I have nvidia audio related stuff and AMD related stuff, not sure if might be relevant?

Guildmate that has this issue tested this fix and found that when playing sound through his wireless headphones, he did not have this option, and has the crashing issue. When playing sound through his speakers, he was able to make this change and he did not crash.

Sounds like its a limitation of his wireless headset. May have a fix rate for its playback. Hopefully he can get another headset.

So I was testing just a wee bit this weekend, and I switched my audio settings from 16bit/48K down to 16/41.1K and didn't get any crashes for a spell in IOD. Kinda moved on to other things and forgot to change my settings back. I had two crashes to desktop (which I never get) in the wilds of IOD over the weekend. Changed back to 48K and all issues seem to have gone away. YMMV...

There's definitely some level of odd complexity going on with the crashes. A shame it's not 100% working for folks with this method; but good it's helping a nice sized chunk of people stop crashing with this change. The challenge will be if SSG can work out what's going on and getting things working well for those who can't workaround the crashes.

With the OpenAL rollback today, be sure to report if it effected your Dread audio crashes or not. I know it's for the chat bug, but any audio changes like that could have side effects either positive or negative for folks with other audio issues.

I don't have crashes, I don't have sound at all. Two days ago everything was great. I have wireless headphones (Sony WH-XB900N), but it's the only audio device I can use.

The weirdest thing is, when I'm logged in and quit the game, I get 2 seconds of sound. But only then.

That sucks and is so odd. Just curious what audio outputs does the game offer for you in the settings? Is it wonky with that drop down menu or just fine but no sound at all?

The drop-down menu is fine and the game recognizes my headphones (at least they're on the list), but there's no sound. Unfortunately I can't use speakers while playing. Before the update I didn't have any sound problems.

If you have the audio crash bug, I'd appreciate it you could check this setting on your computer in your control panel>sound>your audio output>properties>advanced tabs. See if you're at 16bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality) and if so change it to 16bit, 48000 Hz (DVD quality).
If you're experiencing the bug, what version of Windows are you running?

*also, different Sound Cards/Driver versions.

I'm running Win10 Pro 22H2 w/ onboard (Intel/Realtek) sound, MS drivers.. No audio drops.
My DDO audio Sound Playback is set to (Monitor, so) Intel; Focus Loss Behavior is set to Persist Sound

Guildy got this crash error today while doing Dread. The 44k change previously fixed things for them. They had a logitech driver update last night, that might be the cause; trying to pin down what's the issue. Anyone else having issues with raptor audio now crashing them (either having previously been fixed by the sound setting or never crashed before recently)?

So I don't really expect an answer to this, but what the heck... I am not the best at matching up audio, but I was hanging out by some raptors (and I was too lazy to figure out what I was wearing that was IKing them on hit, which didn't help) trying to listen to the sounds they make and the 96k audio files. Some of those 96k files kind of sound like raptors (especially the 2 channel ones from Creatures - Designed).

Assuming that I'm correct, could we try transcoding them to drop the sample rate to 48k or 44.1k ? Probably worth a shot seeing the issues with trying to swap out OpenAL. Probably could do some A/B testing to see if anyone notices the drop in quality in the middle of battle. Assuming that would fix it, you might as well do the 2 192k files.

I honestly don't get why they just don't remove raptor sounds if it causes problems for so many. Is it really a big deal if the raptors don't make sound?

This has been a recurring question for a long time. Either it's something about the raptors (so replace them with something else until the problem is solved) or it's something about the audio sample (so replace it with something else, or remove it outright).

I expect the reason they can't do that is the most obvious one: It's not that simple, or they'd have done it a year ago. Still, I don't recall seeing an answer to it.

Follow-up: It looks like the logitech update reverted their sound output back to 44.1 and they had to manually change it back to 48k again.
