Axel's First Life R10 Paladin Tank

Hey everyone, this is the tank I've been playing lately. Have found it to be effective for R10 quest tanking and commonly run raid difficulties like Hard and R1. Might be fine for mid skull raids too possibly but haven't played it much on those difficulties yet. But does well for the common raid difficulties and R10 quests. Shoutout to @Phloat for doing the bulk of the gear planning. I've posted the build below but I recommend listening to the video I made (see below) because it gives more details about the build and how to play it than the text post here.

Stats below are for 32 point build. If 28 point build, just keep in mind you need 13 base Dex for Spring Attack line.

Nice setup!

I had a few questions:
-If you're running heart and dire bear, why not run signet of dolurhh over Circle? it would get you almost 100 extra HP, I think.
-Globe of true imperial blood would free up several aug slots if you're willing to farm/buy
-Why take tower shield proficiency? Master's touch scrolls cover that.
-Eye of lam will get you more PSP than that ruby.
-Finally, I'm assuming this is just a matter of resources, but if you're running raid fils, I'd consider running wild fort too.

Main reason for circle is it gives +25 intim - best intim bonus in the game.

Yeah, I was hoping to slot this in I just don't have a spare one at the moment.
-Why take tower shield proficiency? Master's touch scrolls cover that.
Well I guess that could work if you prefer. Sounds tedious to constantly have to cast that though... think I'd prefer just taking the feat. The build isn't too feat starved so can spare the feat.
-Eye of lam will get you more PSP than that ruby.
Does it? Have a 153 devotion aug in the weapon, DDOwiki says eye of lam is 146.

Which one specifically are you referring to? Not seeing a raid fil in the wiki called wild fort.

Eye of lam makes a weapon an implement, so if you don't have an implement bonus already going that's 29 more spell power.
Ah ok I missed that. Yeah that would be a straight upgrade then. I'll have to check later if I'm getting implement bonus from anything. I don't believe I have that augment so I'd need to farm it. Good suggestion.

On intim, that's fair—are you short on intim?

Not taking the prof feat is another 54 hp (toughness). YMMV, but MT doesn't have a duration. (Actually, you don't need proficiency, because you don't have shield deflection, so you can just not take proficiency and it won't matter at all).

Wild fort is the +3 con set augment—I'm just suggesting it bc if you're farming raid fills, you'll get some raid runes too.

I have 102 at the moment, with no skill tome. So could get that up to 107 with a store tome, or 105 with a saga tome. What intim number do you think is mandatory for R10s? 102 seems to be really effective, haven't noticed intim fails but I have also not exactly been paying super close attention to it. If I dropped the ring I'd lose 5 intim. I'm already getting Vitality 44 from the circle so looks like it would be mainly be a matter of 50 hp, mostly from the profane, vs 5 intim.

I thought no tower shield proficiency had neg effects on skills/dodge as well? Maybe I'm wrong on this? I'll have to test this next Lam to see confirm the differences. If it's just offensive neg affects then I agree.

OOOH gotcha. I thought you were referring to the filigree you buy with threads, not the set aug ones. Hmm I don't think I can fit it in since it overrides other set bonuses and I currently have 11 of 14 occupied with 4 piece winter, 4 piece vecna and 3 piece sharn. So only open slots for it would be circle ring, heart trinket and kukri. I would have to give up red slot on weapon so I'd have to figure out some way to get in positive spellpower elsewhere.

Put the ruby in your shield and move the sapphire elsewhere? It'd be a bunch of bouncing augs and deciding trade-offs to fit that other set bonus in.

For questing, 100 is plenty, I’d target 105-110 for raids. Is that with prayer up?

Profane HP is scaled by your full HP scalar, so it’s in the ~85 range

No prof hurts your to hit, the ACP applies to skills and the cap applies to dodge regardless of proficiency.

The easiest way to fit Wild fort would be to use the free aug slot you get from upgrading the Kukri. If that’s not in the budget, cut essence of dethek runestone and move eye of lam to shield-dethek is not great (doesn’t proc on SLAs, and epic ring of spell storing is already basically infinite sp on a pally)

Random other thoughts: both of these are more preference than anything, but IMO, dwarf or helf or aasimar are all better than human. I also don’t love t4 VKF, but that’s just bc I use gresto scrolls, which are admittedly a pain.

Good idea, that may work. I'll have to check where my LoB rune count is at to buy the set augs.

That's unbuffed, so before prayer. Buffed it is at 108. So even if I just get a saga +3 tome I'd be at 111 buffed.

Yeah I know the profane HP scales, I meant base HP but yes you're right it comes out to be a lot more than 50.

OK thanks for the clarification on the shield proficiency that's a good suggestion to improve the character then.

I just realized based on this post that I have not even crafted the extra purple aug slot on the Kukri yet, I need to do that.

Human was my preference for the extra feat, heal amp, +1 CON from the core and as a bonus the +10 action boost to PRR/AC is useful too. Dwarf is a great choice too for the HP for sure. Why consider Aasimar over Human or Dwarf though? Would lose a feat compared to human, no CON or action boost in cores and I don't need healing hands b/c I already have lay on hands and renewal.

I don't think it really matters much though when it comes to race there's several about equally viable choices I think. I agree it's really just personal preference. I think even Warforged could be an interesting choice too just b/c you'd get immunity to energy drain inherently so no need for T4 vistani and could be repaired. Don't think I'd want to take the heal amp penalty though.

I also don’t love t4 VKF, but that’s just bc I use gresto scrolls, which are admittedly a pain.
Yep that would be a major PITA. I don't want to have to rely on that, not exactly practical when in combat. I personally think it's important to be immune to neg levels for situations where deathward gets bypassed by mobs. Like the unicorns in Dryad and the Demigod for instance.

Because you're taking toughness, that extra feat is just equivalent to +2 con. I don't personally love Aasimar, but it's a ton of hamp and a bunch of additional healing, and with some enhancement point setups, you get the prr/mrr too.

Dryad with scrolls def takes practice, but you don't actually need to ever get neg leveled by unicorns in dryad if you dodge the horns. If you get tapped by them, you can jump-kite with scrolls. Def a pain though.

Doesn't Human get the exact same hamp as Aasimar or am I missing something?

It does, but if you're going that high in the tree, 10 prr/mrr and healing hands are going to outweigh a toughness, let alone the hamp clickie, etc. 3 extra dodge from human is kind of cool, though. I think dwarf or helf are substantially better, tho

Aasimar gets more HAmp than human via divine purpose, assuming both take max HAmp.

Dwarf gets dragonmark for bubbles, but that costs 12 ap and a feat.

Human (IMO) is best for zero-low racial points.

Love the community interest in low life tank alts these days, everyone should have one!

It's just because I'm a t4/core5 vistani enjoyer, so that only leaves 8 ap for got my back, or human defense boost & con/hamp1/adaptability tower shield.

12 points becomes available with max racial & universal tomes, so could fit bubble, at the cost of 2 feats & possibly -3 con depending on choices.

So with fili & gear being equal a human can exceed dwarf hp & static sheltering while retaining better hamp.

It's much worse for mid reaper+ raids dude to lack of bubble though.

ahh yeah, if you're going big vistani, I can see that. I think dwarf still wins on HP though—with 8 points, you just take all the dwarf cores. Which ED do you run to get you've got my back? I could never make the -55 hp for a feat make sense.

Primal Avatar or Fatesinger, however I think just going human tree for the extra dodge is better.

Edit:
PA +2 con, +10 hp, upgraded shardstorm for ablative hp, 15% absorbs, 15% sonic absorb animal
FS +45hp +1 stats, +6 mrr, +3 skills, upgraded sword sings for hate gen

(assuming only ~14 points available to spend, 3rd core & a t3)

I have an old pally (PDK where I used a +1 heart to replace the fighter lev). I could Lesser TR him to respec, but what do you see as pros/cons of PDK vs. human (i feel like they are similar)

Thanks!

IMO human can be vol, which is a really good defensive clicky.
PDK can take shield deflection in racial tree potentially saving a feat & can go CKT & helm if you wanted to use bastard swords, such as ignition to help fit 4pc forbidden knowledge

I have been running a PDK no lives alt as pally tank for ages, will probably tr into human for the vol clicky tbh, but as always YMMV :)
