Best Solo-Friendly Classes for New Players

I’m relatively new to DDO (Dungeons & Dragons Online) and am looking for a good solo-friendly class to start with. I know DDO is heavily focused on party-based play, but sometimes I just want to explore and level up on my own without relying too much on groups.

From what I’ve read, Paladin and Warlock seem like solid choices due to their self-healing and survivability. Rangers and Artificers also look interesting because of their versatility. What do you guys think? Which class would you recommend for a beginner who wants to solo effectively but still contribute in group content later on?

Another thing of note, at least what many new players who want to solo tell me, is traps and locked optionals become a point of frustration. The simplicity and self sufficiency of warlocks and paladins is nice, but a 2 rogue splash (trapping plus evasion) adds a level of complication (especially for gearing) that I would not recommend to new players... but Arti's can disable traps as well, so that is another point in their favor imo.

Another one I'd add to the list is bear druid. It's got great bulk, CC, utility, and very good damage. It also allows the usage of a large shield which can greatly reduce the threat of traps while not sacrificing much dps-wise.

I would strongly recommend choosing a home server and joining a guild then discussing the issue on their discord server. there are too many options you will need to consume before you can build a good solo character

Paladin, Alchemist, Warlock.

Also, Lamannia preview server should be on later this week. You may take the opportunity and look at the different classes there.

Blight druid.
Solid defense with all the temp hitpoints and great offense that works on almost anything.

Artificer would be my first choice (but it is a premium class), & Dark Hunter as a secondary.

Both classes are fair in melee and ranged, offer trapping, and come with critters to keep the mobs off you (well kinda).

I'd say Ranger or a 2Hand melee (big weapon) one of them, Barbarian, Dragonlord, Paladin, Fighter.

Self Heal isnt that important for leveling. There are hirelings, They are cheap with the ingame money (that you get by selling loot) and heal fine.

Dont do Warlock, Warlock is boring as caster and deals low dmg for a ranged dps.

All these answers are good but those classes can be a bit complicated for a new player.

I would suggest a half-orc Barbarian for someone new to DDO and all its mechanisms.

They are super easy to play with very few hot bars to manage
They can bust open almost all locks with just 5 points in the racial tree
They have improved uncanny dodge and can get through most traps fairly easily.

I have always felt more successful soloing with trap skills. I feel the resource cost to be high to have to heal after tough traps. I don't have the traps memorized well enough. For this reason, I enjoy inquisitive, artificer, or swashbuckling builds for solo play these days.

Blightcaster. The temporary hp starting from level 6 are great.

THF Dragon Lord. Great CC, great DPS.
THF Barb and Paladin, great as well.

Ranged crossbow builds are great. But they often require premium stuff (Artificer, Harper, Inquisitive...)

Gonna add caster Cleric. With Holy Smite SLA @level 6, vroom.

My personal takes would be Artificer and Paladin.
Both classes dip into the spellcasting system and get you used to it which will help later down the TR line while not making it their whole thing (classes that make magic their whole thing are NOT beginner-friendly anywhere).

Paladin makes you very, very resilient and requires next to no effort gearing.
Artificer gives you a way to do away with traps (though that requires some extra effort to remember gearing for it, it's a skill you have to learn eventually, and this is easy entry)

Warlock cuz pew-pew. If you select Fey pact, you do sonic damage which will pretty much work on anything.

Chain shape is super fun. You pew-pew, and then your shot bounces between enemies. Very fun to see it do its work.

You’ll be pretty tanky. At level 10, you’ll get a spell called Evard’s Black Tentacles, which will lock almost anything in place (and do damage), one of the best CC spells in the game.

As others have said, pally is also a good choice if you want melee, and arti is good if you want ranged. Dark tempest, arti or rogue for trap skills if that’s ur jam, too.

Whatever split you decide on, just make sure to take your “trapper” level (rog, arti or dark tempest) first. You’ll have the most skill points to work with
