Cannot update/reinstall the game - with workaround

Bug Report Number:

Since about April I failed to update the game and claim the anniversary goodies (and never had the time to dig further down).
Whenever I start the launcher, if freezes downloading client_local_something file.
Formerly for German version, after uninstalling and attempting to install now the English version hangs as well (file 26623 of 26634 according to todays latest attempt) at 24% progress bar.
OS: Windows 11 Pro German version.
I paused the realtime antimalware scanners (Eset and Malwarebytes), but no change either.
Running As Administrator does not change the behavior either.

Any ideas how to solve this?

More attempts made: On my non gaming laptop installation went through, although the launch screen, if it loads at all, displays no character on the server.
Attempted installation via Steam on my PC - got stuck at English language file.

Well, since here is no answer at all here a potential solution I found in the LotRO forum where another person was also stuck at 88% at the end of download (downloading file x from x as my computer now does also or at starting forward iterations).

So while the launcher is frozen, open the Windows resource monitor application.
On the first tab you see your process dndlauncher.exe and in the status column the status "Suspended".
dndlauncherfrozen.jpg

While the reason for this is unclear, right clicking the suspended process in the list and selecting "Resume" in context menu will indeed resume the launcher and bring you to the login screen.

No longer Safe mode with networking boot, which was the other tedious workaround for the issue.
But I still recommend the paramters "-skiprawdownload -disablepatch" attached in a shortcut to dndlauncher.exe to avoid getting stuck each time even if there is no new update.

Best greetings from Germany

While the reason for this is unclear,
Settings -> apps -> installed apps. Find the installed app that is getting suspended, click the the dots on the right. Select "Advanced Options" (this is only available for uwp apps, ie Windows native apps, but these are also the only apps that can be suspended). Under "background apps permissions" find "let this app run in the background" and select "always".
or maybe:
Settings>Privacy>Background_Apps

Set master slider to OFF.

I don't know if this will help you, sorry.

I've had the same problem since June 16 2024. I've tried all the workarounds posted here and on google. Nothing works . All I can do is repair files each time I want to play.
Did you ever find a working solution?

DDO's default install location is C:\Program File(x86)\ Windows being Windows sometimes results in permission errors (like I found discord constantly being needed to run as admin for my push to talk to work when running DDO). But changing DDO's location to somewhere else (like creating a DDO folder on the C drive), you can then install it to C:\DDO\ instead (this fixed my discord issue with DDO running). So if you're running into various permissions issues with running DDO then that's something you might try and see if helps you.

DDO's default install location
Whenever I get super bored I'm gonna test if installing literally as the administrator account instead of just elevating from a normal account does anything permissions wise to prevent this must run as admin trouble. Whatever the problem is, I can't seem to fix it moving ownership around, etc. BUT... on old installs there isn't a problem, even though the launcher/etc programs are the same, etc.

But yes, short easy answer is just get out of the program files folders, install to its own folder somewhere else lol

edit: hmmm, maybe its the literal files userpref and ddokeymap. I wonder if they need to be shared ownershipped or whatever...

My games are almost never installed in Program Files, but on a separate SSD drive in a Games folder.
And yes, the old installations of both DDO and LotRO did work without that flaw. Did not play a while and had eventually the feature update to Windows 11 23H2 between the last successful attempt and the later issues.

Right clicking on the installer in Setting/Apps/Installed Apps does nothing, clicking the 3 dots brings the choices Change (is greyed out) and Uninstall.
No, on the installation software in Explorer.

Open Explorer -- navigate to the folder where you have downloaded the installer software.

If that is in Downloads, move or copy it to a different folder in your Data.

In that folder, then you rght-click on the installer -- select Show more options -- select Properties.

That is where you can access the Advanced options for the DDO installer.
