Character transfer: What if your name already ends in -1 ?

In one of the last hardcore seasons, I decided to name my character the same as on my main server Khyber. I transferred said hardcore character then to Khyber, where he evidently promptly got a -1 at the end of his name.

I plan to move first my main xxx to a 64-bit server of my choice in one of the coming months, then follow up with all my bank toons to the same server. I already did a check and the name of my main toon is not in use on any other server because it's an awful name (and I created dummies to reseve that name in any case). Hence I expect that the name of that guy will remain xxx on the new server.

But if I move that xxx-1 guy to one of the new 64-bit servers, will he become xxx-1-1? Or xxx-2? Or would transfer not be allowed? Or would the transfer fail horribly and create an unrecoverable corruption of the database followed by a week-long server-crash?

The first would be awesome, the last would be horrible (yet strangely hilarious). The middle two ... meh.

If there is a conflict with the (name)-1, you'll get renamed to -2, and if there's a conflict with -2, you'll get renamed to -3, etc. Mostly relavant when it comes to bank alts and such but that is how it works. Every rename gets a /changename (newname) ability.

When I moved to Orien I had a few characters with this distinguishing suffix, but I never knew about this changename ability?

Is this changename ability a feat in the character panel or an item or what?

Go to general chat window and type /help
In the list will be /changename and its syntax
There are a lot of command in the old text based interface

Enjoy.

hmmmm toonname-65535 error flipbit overflow
that is to assume a 16 bits unsigned integer. I believe the developers were using 32 bit integers. (look at plat cap).

And now with 64 bits, we can have numbers up to 18,446,744,073,709,551,615.... yes, we can have plat... and Bill Gates/Elon Musk can count their net worth. :)

The public feedback isn't great but it has always applied to every rename ever, so it's just available to anyone who's ever had a rename due to name conflict.

I had this rename thing. But only because my character names are blocked by... me, it seems. Many of my characters got a -1. But when I check for the names on the friends list, the characters without the -1 are in my guild. Which I know they're not, I can check the roster, and they're not. So my best guess is that the transfer bugged and the game thinks the characters went through on the first try. When they actually went through, they then had to be renamed.

The joys of the many different transfer bugs in DDO.

Example:
I recently TRed my old toon Upoint-1. He used to be just Upoint (Ipunch, haha) on G-land, but got changed after transfer. I can't change his name to Upoint again, because the game thinks the server already has one of those. So I entered Upoint into friends, and he's there... IN MY OWN GUILD. Now, I already know the answer, but I check the guild roster to be sure - and no, there's no Upoint in the guild, only Upoint-1.

Sometimes DDO is much like banging my head against the wall. It feels so good to stop.

Would be helpful if the naming rules were relaxed a little to facilitate more variety. Even the use of special characters and numbers would help out a ton.

Curious about an even more unlikely scenario - if your character name already has a previous server appended (such as char~Lhazaar), what will happen to its name after transfer?

If there's a conflict, it gets -1

If -1 is in conflict, -1 becomes -2, etc

I don't think it's that hard

Probably have to worry about SQL injection if they allow special characters. Sometimes it's just best to leave them out of any kind of input field that isn't converted first, like the hashing of passwords.

So what happens to the Account Bank Shared Storage if you transfer 2 characters from different worlds to 1 world?

Gonna speculate a tad here. Each and every Shared Bank slot has a unique identifier. Usually a number. That’s why you can buy them out of order in the store. That’s how they manage additional slot allocations in expansions and troves. If you have the same slot on two servers, you are only going to get the one equivalent slot on your new server.

This is one of the account settings as well. It’s only going to move with the first character you pack. Those slots should disappear on that server after the pack. Probably anyway.

Last week I saw, in the social panel on Orien, a char whose name was ending with a chain of trailing '-1'.
I never saw that before. I should have taken a screenshot.
