"Crippling" lag

Trying to understand why I keep seeing the term "crippling lag" used by people on the forum.

It sounds like something out of a comic book: "Can't break free...crippling lag...if I could just get to my...heat ray..."

Is there a non-crippling lag? Wouldn't it be easier to just say "lag"? Is there a certain amount of time a lag occurence has to be in place before it earns the title "crippling lag"?

A little bit of lag, which comes and goes isn't crippling. The game is still playable with lag like that.

Lag that holds me in place for over 10 minutes, usually resulting in death, is crippling and means that I'll just shut down the game for the night.

Well that sounds like an accurate description of what happens from time to time in DDO.

I would say a "normal" lag is something like max. 1 second delay. But if you are stuck in place for 10+ seconds, I would say it qualifies for "crippling"

I don't get crippling lag on Cormyr. I just get booted off one or two times a session.

On a side note, my auto fill for this site just told me that my credentials were invalid when I tried to log in to comment.....

One of the definitions of crippling is to "deprive the ability to function normally".

There are ranges of severity within that, but nobody is mis-using the word if they are not able to play the game normally.

The last 2 patches helped quite a bit, but I am still not back to my normal game play. We had to restart a raid last weekend because the instance was super laggy. I am happy with the progress SSG is making, but everyone has a different litmus test for whether it's worth playing the game in the current state. Most people I know have either reduced playtime, adjusted what they do in-game or stopped playing entirely. If that doesn't meet the definition of "depriving the ability to function normally" - I don't know what does.

I do feel SSG earned a little patience from me though as the last 2 patches did make a noticeable difference - at least for me.

"To injure or harm someone so that they are unable to walk or move in the usual way"
"To severely affect or limit someone in a way that is not physical"
"To cause severe damage to something so that it cannot operate effectively"
"To prevent software or a device from working normally, usually intentionally in order to make the user pay for mor esoftware, for another device"

...as per english dictionary.

All of those are met by lag spikes more than a few seconds - and the cripple effect in game which is an temporary albeit annoying slow is pretty damn tame compared to the long lag freezes where players are floating in air unable to fight back.

Pretty much matches the dictionary definitions regardless if its health related or software related...

I guess "lag" is what DDO usually has (chronic non-crippling lag), where sometimes it pauses for a few moments and "Crippling lag" is where you are substantially delayed or impeded for larger periods due to it.

Strictly speaking none of it is "lag" in the sense we normally talk about lag in video games, which is network latency between the player and the server, this isn't a latency between player and server issue, it's a latency within the system (wehther that is network latency between multiple nodes which all work together to present a single DDO "server" I couldn't say).

I wouldn't say Moonsea has generally had much "crippling" lag.

Are you struggling with lag? Maybe it's time to join the "Is the most wonderful lag of the year!" (Contest) post.

What is crippling lag?
It depends on who you ask.
Casual player with hirelings on normal - elete ..... 10-15 seconds of lag
Zerger on Reaper 5 ---- 2 seconds of lag
Depends.

No. 2 seconds is annoying, not crippling. Crippling means you can’t move for 5 minutes, which is new norm for DDO.

As far as I'm concerned, lag is crippling when it prevents you from enjoying the game.
Being stuck in place for 1 or 2 seconds usually is fine, but anything long enough to cause a wipe or to make you bored enough to quit playing is crippling. Simple.

Google, what's the difference between "impeding" and "crippling"?
While similar, impeding refers to slowing or hindering progress, while crippling refers to causing severe and fundamental damage that disables or stops something entirely. "Impeding" suggests a temporary or surmountable obstacle, whereas "crippling" implies a more permanent or devastating effect.

per Google. lol

You know when it's crippling. Just need to fire up some Steely Crue and chill for 5 minutes.
Well, I'm glad at least one person came at me from a different angle than thinking I needed to know what the definition of "crippling" is.

Dude, you need to get one of those Nikki Suxx signature pinky brackets for your P-Bass. That would be METAL.

Have you ever seen a cripple? It’s that, but lag
