Dark Hunter TWF build for high reaper

Pure Dex-based. Tempest Capstone, 21 in stalker. Horizon walker to grab Dex trance.

LD main destiny, Shadowdancer secondary, fury tertiary for QC. Upgraded Shadowdancer strike ain’t half bad either for trash if you have salt


Threats scimitars for bonus crit multi
Autumn equinox if you can stomach it

Lots of feat options, but spring attack line is kind of a no brainer. WWA feels pretty okay, but not a must-take imo

14/5/1 pala dh fvs, t5 tempest, vkf capstone, undying kukri+clatter, eladrin if u want survivability, horc if u want dps.

ED's, t5 dreadnought, t4 fury, t3 shadow

Go pure barb if u want close to highest dps a TWF can do while being crazy tanky.

Go swf sdk pure barb if u want higher dps then both of those AND better aoe.

For high reaper aka optimal vs fun, you want to go dex eladrin with autumn attunement, horizon walker trance and 41 in vistani. A bit of tempest for defense and dark hunter for imbue. Fury destiny with quick cutter and heals/chaos bonuses, shadow for evasion.

Can easily splash some fighter 2 or fighter 1 warlock 1

The only build I've heard of that actually uses the DH tree is a 12 DH 8 Monk shuriken build that uses the Ninja flash ability to trigger DH's extra sneak attack dice in Core-4. Everyone else just taps DH for some extra imbues and moves on.

You are not wrong. We use dark hunter for the free feats and trapping alongside base attack bonus. The tier5s of dark hunter are really bad.

I feel 14 points in dark hunter for imbue dice+pet, maybe 24 for melee power but I can probably get more melee power elsewhere.

Right now 17 dark hunter 1 barbarian razorclaw but I'm using vistani 42/horizon 13, trying to figure out if I do 18/2 or 18/1/1

100% agree - I have an alt (almost bank toon) as a full DH and I can't see why anyone, ranged or melee, would take it over DWS or Tempest, respectively.
NONE of my Dark Hunter lives had a single AP in the Dark Hunter tree.

Right before MD came out I did Horc Pure 20 Dark Hunter for a little bit, it was my last PL and ran it at cap for a while. It was fine and I'm sure I could play it competitively if I needed to, but it's ice-skating up-hill. There are just many other better options right now for a melee.

And this is coming from me, I'm biased as heck towards tempest.

I never put even a single point into the DH tree, I was just curious how people build a Tempest DH for high reaper content. Gear, trees, etc

My curiosity is similar; all I typically use DH for is as a L1 Bab+1 Trapping splash. Or, if I want DWS, I'll use DH for it instead of base Ranger for trapping+dice. The DH tree looks pointless past splashing.

I wouldn't go that far; in combination with DWS (with DWS being the main tree), it makes for a decent sneak attack machine. But definitely not the best build or anything, and a bit like "skating uphill". T4 Slayer in the Dark is also a nice RP boost.

So I'd acknowledge it for deep splash potential.

Dark Hunter tree is worse than Tempest for dual-wielding and worse than Deepwood Stalker for ranged weapons. No one in their right mind would make it the primary tree for either of those roles. At most you grab Bleed the Weak and maybe a couple extra sneak attack dice before spending the rest of your APs elsewhere. So what can you use it for instead on a pure build?

My solution was a THF build with 41 Dark Hunter / 24 DWS / 9-11 Vistani KF / 6 Harper Agent: max STR then INT (Know the Angles). Either build for Rage+Power Attack or Precision. Tempest offers little for THF (or SWF) builds so ignoring it for Dark Hunter makes sense in this instance.

It's basically okay for a hybrid with melee DPS, trap skills, and some magic. But no one in this community is interested in "basically okay" builds. With only +1 crit range & multiplier, it couldn't keep up with Frenzied Berserker when it came out 2 1/2 years ago; and Dragonlord has rendered most such flavor builds moot. Dark Hunter 15 / DLord 5 would be good, but mostly because DLord 5 makes everything better.

The problem with "basically okay" builds is that you can make just about anything into a "basically okay" build in DDO. So it's interesting to read what crazy stuff people try to mix, but it's unlikely to change the way other people play.

This makes sense - but only in the context of "if you really need another DH life and don't want to do bow or TWF".

Also curious - is Vistani for haste boost or something else? And why not just go for INT to hit and damage in Harper to avoid stat split?

VKF splashes have a few key AP points that work with every thing. You can tell what they're chasing by the AP spent:
  • 06 AP = Deflect Arrows
  • 08 AP = Haste Boost
  • 09 AP = Deflect+Haste
  • 11 AP = 5 Double
  • 21 AP = 5 Double (stacking)
  • 22 AP = 20 OH or 20 MP (dagger/kukri only but VERY nice)
  • 41 AP = 5 Stacking Haste (vanishing in U76)
If you're using Dagger/Kukri, all the stuff "on the way" is nice to very nice as well. The OH Chance in particular is often the single biggest reason I'll pick kukri for a TWF build instead of other weapons.

Switching to INT primary means you need to put 12 APs minimum in Harper Agent. This build was very AP constrained so I decided it wasn't worth it. Plus there are more ways of boosting STR than INT, especially since I was planning to use FotW Rage.

NONE of my Dark Hunter lives had a single AP in the Dark Hunter tree.

Right before MD came out I did Horc Pure 20 Dark Hunter for a little bit, it was my last PL and ran it at cap for a while. It was fine and I'm sure I could play it competitively if I needed to, but it's ice-skating up-hill. There are just many other better options right now for a melee.

And this is coming from me, I'm biased as heck towards tempest.
can you share this build, bud?

Thats the current build (as first lifer). what can i change to improve it?
I posted this build a few months ago and it's my baseline for a DEX Dark Hunter. The biggest changes since then have been the U76 Finesse changes:
  • All weapons that benefit from the Finesse feat now innately use the higher of Dexterity or Strength for to-hit and damage, just like more recent versions of Dungeons & Dragons. Scimitar[1] is now a light weapon with a lower off-hand penalty and is now included as benefiting from the Finesse feat.
  • Weapon Finesse: Now grants +2 to-hit and 10% Fortification bypass
  • Ranger Tempest Core 2 and 3: Grants Dexterity to-hit and damage with all one-handed weapons respectively. Prior text about scimitar has been removed.
This should open up some new possibilities, such as DEX Tempest using Knight's Training weapons (longswords etc.).
Enhancements: 80 APs

Tempest - Points spent: 21

Vistani Knife Fighter - Points spent: 42

Horizon Walker - Points spent: 14

Dark Hunter - Points spent: 3
IMO the best part of Tempest are the Tier-5s: Dance of Death + Dual Perfection + Thousand Cuts FTW. If you're not going for that, you might as well put those points into Deepwood Stalker for +1 crit range to kukris and extra sneak attack dice.
