DDO and end of life for Windows 10

This main issues with Windows 10 or 11 is when DDO for whatever reason doesn't always install the various library files needed, so sometimes one has to manually install DirectX 9 or .NET files (https://forums.ddo.com/index.php?th...-as-crowdsourced-by-many-players-advice.1666/ pretty much covers those issues).

Windows 10 and 11 NEVER install the older files for older versions of DirectX which is what DDO uses for DX9 and DX10. Whenever I wipe my PC it is the first thing after drivers that gets installed.

Has anyone tried SteamOS on a PC? Thinking this could be the future of PC gaming if gets good enough.

I have run DDO on the steamdeck, I was really wondering if anyone here has setup a PC as replacement for windows using SteamOS. I am planning on moving to a linux variant when Windows 10 goes EOL.

I agree that windows 11 is a garbage operating system and you have every right to enjoy it.

But windows 10 does not die the day it goes EOL. Otherwise all those PCs I've got running XP wouldn't work still. I use as a daily driver a windows 7 laptop. It goes online, accesses web-based services, even plays DDO(though I use my win10 gaming system for that). Point is the laptop is 17 years old and has no problem not getting viruses.

Windows 10 will have very long legs. God knows Windows 11 is the Second Coming of Vista.

I doubt DDO is going to make win 10 not work for DDO any time soon. Win 10 being end of life really just means Microsoft will stop releasing updates for it. It'll still work and third party AV will still support Win 10 because the developers of those softwares aren't insane. Can't imagine SSG having the resource to write a Linux client though.

A Linux client would be great. It might even hit double-digits in terms of the people using it. :)

I have not migrated to Win 11 because my perfectly good hardware is not supported (being only 1 generation early there is no security garbage). The end of life for Win 10 is scheduled to be October 14, 2025 at which time my system will turn to junk as far as running DDO. Yeah, Win 10 will continue to operate, but without support. This will be OK for a while, but cannot be a long term solution. I have not been a friend of that Bill for some time.

Will DDO finally release a native version that will run on x86 Linux? That is without emulation. DDO has about 1 1/2 years to develop a native Linux port that would free us all.
Yes... that is what they should work on... an entire new version of the game for 6 nerds on Linux. I'm going to go out on a limb and say you have never run a business.

Win10 is just a layer of garbage over Win7 with a new interface and built-in support for new classes of devices.

What everyone should be working on is an open source Windows7-like operating system like ReactOS which is currently not stable & operational.

You can try the new Wine 10.0 that runs windows software on Linux. Even supporting X11. The day of having to run on a specific hardware are quickly coming to an end. Parallels now has windows on mac on M processors (not fast but still impressive). Lots of choices.

Linux is weird about supportability, though. I have literal piles of graphics cards that work fine on windows 10 with a driver from a few years ago, but that won't work under linux because "its not supported anymore".

With the best will in the world I suspect there's quite an overlap between old school beardy linux nerds and DDO players, but I still feel like porting a game to run natively in Linux would only be a killer feature for about 5 people.

I use garuda linux distro and lazily straight installed DDO from the download folder and it runs flawlessly.

Right click use wine to run install.
