DDO Loadout Optimizer: Your best-in-slot gear, *proven by math*

As someone trying to figure out how to optimally update my handwraps Monk build with the new Demogorgon gear, this tool looks fantastic.
As others have noted though, weighting to maximize the benefits would be critical.
A couple things I noted: I'd like the option to have it select only gear with sun/moon slots, unless it's there and I missed it. Also when choosing Cloth it recommends Legendary Duergarcraft Plate (heavy) so the logic might need some tweaking.

Really appreciate the effort so far!

Spook

Ghostly Troll
Promising but its got a long way to go.

1) Missing effects - there are some effects that we build around (as they are rare) eg Bone Paws, Druidic Mastery, Procs etc that seem to be missing
2) Stacking - this ones been called out already but there are some incorrect stacking rules like insight and insightful
3) Caps - has no awareness of caps - eg doublestrike might be my highest priority until i hit 100% then its irrelevant
4) Over prioritising small benefits - +2 exceptional bonus is rarely worth the tradeoff when they come on level 18 gear
5) need to be able to set a minimum for stats eg i need 300 PRR then maximise everything else once thats hit
6) Likewise maximums (goes hand in hand with caps) if i dont want to chase the +2 exceptional i can choose to cap at 2 lower
7) Ideally the tool would calculate stat weightings and maximise dps (for dps builds) but that requires build awareness
8) Includes items that are no longer available eg Seeker Tap of Spellsight

Use it now: https://eddiefiggie.github.io/ddo-loadout-optimizer/

Ever spent an evening with six wiki tabs open, a spreadsheet, and a headache, trying to work out which named items give you the most Constitution *without* wasting a bonus type you already have covered (gear Tetris anyone?)? I did that one too many times....so I built a tool that does it exactly, in a few seconds, right in your browser.

This isn't a tier list and it isn't "what a good player usually wears." It's a real **optimizer**: you tell it the stats you care about, and it searches every wiki-sourced named item, augment, set bonus, and crafting option in the game and hands back the **single loadout that is mathematically the best** for your priorities — slot by slot, with the receipts (augments and upgrade recommendations).

No install, no login, nothing to download. Free. Works on desktop from your browser.

01-optimal-loadout.jpg

---

Why it's different

Most gear guides tell you *an* answer. This tells you *the* answer and **shows its work**.

Under the hood it's a genuine solver (a mixed-integer linear program running in your browser), not a pile of if-statements. It respects DDO's real rules:

- Bonus-type stacking done right....only the highest of each same-named type counts; different types add. It won't hand you two Insightful Con items and pretend they stack.
- Strict priority order. You rank the stats you want; it maximizes your #1 first, then your #2 without giving up any of #1, and so on. Same query always gives the same load out.

When it tells you a set bonus beats three individual items, it's because it **proved** it.... and it'll show you the point-by-point comparison.

02-ranked-priorities-attribution.jpg

---

How to use it

1. Open the [site].
2. Set your **minimum level cap**, and optionally race, armor type, and weapon setup.
3. Choose your **gear pool** — all gear in the game, or **only what you own** (import a Trove inventory export).
4. **Add the stats you want, in priority order** — reorder to play with outcomes. First = most important.
5. Hit **Solve.**

That's it. In well under a few seconds you get a full answer.

---

What you get back

- **The full equipped loadout** laid out slot by slot, every slot filled, set pieces highlighted.
- **A ranked-priority readout** showing *exactly where every point of every stat comes from* — which item, which set, which bonus type. No hand-waving.
- **A Loadout Deep Dive** listing every item's affixes and every craft, augment, and set-membership you'd need to apply to hit that build.
- **An Alternatives tab** — near-optimal trade-off builds (complete a *different* set, free up a slot, or take fewer crafting steps). Click any one to inspect it against the optimum.
- **An Item Browser** to search and filter the entire indexed roster.

And it doesn't stop at what drops — it tells you **what to craft**:

- Which **augment** goes in which slot (respecting the real color-fit rules — Colorless anywhere, Red into Red/Purple/Orange, etc., including Lunar/Solar).
- Which **"Sealed in X"** effect to unseal at the Ritual Table.
- Which **Nearly Completed** (Terror of Demogorgon) or **Viktranium** (Chill of Ravenloft) option to pick.
- Which **Dinosaur Bone insert** to slot (Isle of Dread).
- Which **set bonus to craft into a host** — *awaken* a set on a Vecna *Lost Purpose* item at the Cannith Repurposing Station, or slot a Set Bonus augment on a Dino Bone host — **including completing an artifact set** (Vol's Influence, Delight of the Devourer, and friends) that isn't found natively on *any* single item.

---

Save, share, come back later

- **Save characters** in your browser (nothing leaves your machine) and reload a build straight to its results.
- **Back up / restore** all your saved builds to a file to move them between devices.
- **Share a single loadout** as a forum-ready Markdown post, a clean CSV, or a print-friendly page — great for build threads right here.

---

What's coming

Filigrees are the big one I hear about most, and Green Steel / Thunder-Forged / Essence crafting are on the list. More enriched gear from the recent expansions keeps getting folded in. I'd love to know **which system you want next.**

---

Feedback wanted

This is a labor of love and it gets better the more real builds get thrown at it. If it gives you a weird answer, misses an item, or you want a system modeled — **please reply here.** Tell me the build you tried and the priorities you set, and I'll dig in.

Try it, break it, tell me what you find:

Wow, i absolutely love this. Please continue adding to this as i think alot of people will benefit from this type of tool

Please note the below is constructive criticism (as i think you have done an amazing job and dont want to discourage you)

1. i picked heavy armor, but when i clicked the solve button it recommended me

Epic Robe of Insight

2. is there a way we can pre select an item, so the software optimizer can work around the items we have pre-selected (if this is already in there, i apologize, but i couldnt work out how to do it.

3. I picked one hander and shield, but after the optimization. It didnt recommend a shield for me to use

Keep up the great work and looking forward to the updates

Yay!! Good feedback. My test cases were quite narrow. I knew I can count on you all. Give me a few days to clean up the dataset.
Really wish SSG would just have a data lake of all of the gear, some of the Wiki data entries you'll find aren't perfect. Ideally in Parquet lol, but we know that'll never happen. The data quality on DDOWiki is pretty good but they still have some issues.

Just tried setting up a Bard to see how it worked, and there's no Sonic Crit or Spellpower

I specified a 36th-level Bladeforged Paladin.

I got a level 8 docent recommendation, no goggles, and no rings. I did get recommendations for all other slots, though.

It would be cool if we could pick pieces that we definitely wanted (Hydra's Heart minor artifact trinket, for example) to be included in the loadout.

Some suggestions:

  1. As others have noted, the ability to lock certain armor types / materials (especially for druidic oath purposes) and weapon types is crucial.
  2. For Single Weapon fighting, you need to include options for Weapon + Orb, Weapon + Buckler, and Weapon + empty offhand.
  3. Giving the user the option to weigh the bonus types for each item affix is super useful, and something that the older app based version of this had. It would be fantastic for me to be able to weigh "exceptional constitution" lower than "insightful physical sheltering" in an item search table.
  4. That said, being able to view the affixes in multiple columns makes it easier to deal with.
  5. I would love, love for there to be an option that allows you to solve using items that fill the most affixes instead of simply the highest number. Finding items that have 3-4 useful affixes for my character is generally more useful than simply having it pick items that only have 1 useful affix because it's the largest number.
  6. Give users the ability to exclude raid items and craftable essence / set augments. When I tried it, it suggested no less than four of the blank craftable items from Relentless. If a non-raider got that list, they would be more than displeased with it.

Did some more fiddling with it, it has promise and potential

One issue I'm having is that it's wanting to recommend the lvl 36 Anniv stuff, which I have none of and can't get for over 6 months. Maybe have an event flag on items to be able to filter them out?

Amongst issues pointed out by the others, it'd be nice if you could just upload your character and find improvements.

Start page settings being ignored?
Setting "armor type" and "weapon setup": For example I set "medium", "One hand, shield" and I got heavy armor and no shield proposed.

Option to exclude items.
For example, who wants to spend threads on RNG rolling for a "legendary gem of facets"?
Would be nice to ignore an item for a proposal.

Quite a lot of people do… just a shame it can’t be catalyst upgraded or stats not scaling with crafting level on it - it’s 1/117 chance to get your combo if you only want one specific combo that’s still much better odds than pulling specific rare loot to get a double set item - not sure with new xpac but was still bis for many builds up to u80 at least - guess we have to level cap hits 40 before we get immortal (post legendary) versions of older gear

I think it's a great start but there are some issues

1. Need to be able to subfilter bonus types. If you have a trance you don't need insightful deadly, for example
2. Need to be able to put specific items in slots to have it work around, or exclude items from slots. One may have a great curse that you want to keep.
3. A way to exclude rares or raid loot. I like raiding, but won't farm for rares
4. A way to exclude items that are no longer obtainable. It kept giving me a quiver that was only available on the codemasters EU servers from 20 years ago.
5. Would be nice to be able to make a gearset with only your gear, but it suggest simple swaps to upgrade that you are missing
6. I think it gave me a ring that did not have any stats on it that I wanted, but added an augment that gave me a stat. I had other items with slots unused

Edited as you've already added a bunch. Thanks!

Updates Based on Community Feedback

Granted....can't get to them all yet. A number of the issues reported in the original forum thread have now been fixed more or less or added:

Fighting-style presets

The setup process was too cumbersome, especially for common builds such as TWF melee, ranged throwers, and DC casters. You can now choose from:
  • One-handed
  • Dual-wielding / TWF
  • Two-handed
  • Bow
  • Crossbow + Rune Arm
  • Unarmed
There are also one-click priority bundles for Melee, Ranged, Caster, and Trapping builds.

Docents appearing on the wrong characters

The optimizer could recommend docents to characters that could not equip them, including non-forged races and characters using normal armor. Docent detection now uses the actual item type rather than relying on the item name. Non-forged races will no longer receive docents, and armor type and proficiency restrictions are now enforced.....let me know otherwise. Hard to test all the use cases.

Crafting options being over-counted

Some items with selectable crafting effects were receiving credit for every possible option instead of only the option you would actually craft. For example, Ophael’s Cincture could incorrectly receive credit for all of its ability-score choices....ack! This has been fixed. The optimizer now selects and counts exactly one crafting option. This also addresses similar cases where an augment or effect appeared multiple times even though some copies provided no additional benefit.

Off-hand equipment support

Shields, orbs, bucklers, and rune arms were previously missing from the solver. That excluded roughly 595 items.

These items are now supported, including:
  • Sword-and-board builds
  • Caster builds using an orb
  • Artificer builds using a crossbow and rune arm
Minimum and maximum item levels

The optimizer could recommend items far below your intended level range.

You can now set both:
  • A maximum minimum level
  • A minimum minimum level
This lets you remove low-level clutter while still preventing the optimizer from suggesting gear above your target level.

Forum sharing

BBCode export is now available.

You can export a complete build, including its constraints and set bonuses, and post it directly to the DDO forums.

==========================================================================================

Appreciate the support and feedback. Keep checking in and trying to break things. Your input will only make it better. Can't get to it all right away so I'm focusing on the basics workign properly. I did notice some people asking for features that are already baked in, if you've tried it and its not working as you hoped, give me feedback. =) Click around... try things and keep me posted.

Happy hunting!

When I set both Main Hand and Off Hand to Kukris, I get this build instead:

Loadout
Optimal loadout — built with the DDO Loadout Optimizer.

ML: 19 | Race: Human | Armor: Heavy | Weapon: One-hand / Dual-wield: Kukris | Off-hand weapon: Kukris | Gear pool: Only what I own | Priorities: Melee Power > Doublestrike > Melee Alacrity > Accuracy > Deadly > Armor-Piercing > Armor Class

Loadout
  • Armor — Duergarcraft Plate (ML 11): Armor Class +25 Armor, Enhancement Bonus (Armor) +5, Fortification +80, Physical Sheltering +3 Quality, False Life +5 Quality (augments: Sun, Blue)
  • Helmet — Umber Brim (ML 15): Improved Quelling Strikes +1 Bool, Accuracy +5 Insight, Deception +3 Insight, Strength +1 Profane, Dexterity +1 Profane, Constitution +1 Profane, Intelligence +1 Profane, Wisdom +1 Profane, Charisma +1 Profane (augments: Green)
  • Goggles — Goggles of the Warrior (ML 13): Doublestrike +8, Sight Beyond Sight +1 Bool, Combat Mastery +2 Quality, Armor-Piercing +5 Insight (augments: Sun, Yellow)
  • Necklace — Standard Issue Sigil (ML 15): Magical Sheltering +19, Armor Class +6 Deflection, Spell Save +6 Resistance, Parrying +3 Insight (augments: Green)
  • Trinket — Cursekeeper (ML 14): Negative Amplification +15 Insight, Light Resistance +13 Insight, False Life +24 Vitality, Magical Efficiency +10 (augments: Green)
  • Off Hand — Rising Sun (ML 15): Armor Class +15 Shield, Enhancement Bonus (Armor) +5, Light Absorption +17, Coruscating +4, Magical Sheltering +9 Insight, Magical Sheltering +4 Quality (augments: Blue)

Rising Sun is a Shield. I won't even mention that almost everything else is also an very poor choice, as it overly relies on Augments instead of just filling the slots with Gear that has better stats. Still very far away from Optimal, but it's getting there.

A good start, nice work. Probably overuses items that have uniquely high benefits like Memoriam (for the 75 heal amp) and mysterious cloak (for the exp amp and high MRR). I don't think most people are going to be using those at level 36. Also gave me the level 13 VOD bracers for the +40 equipment amp....and amp was my third priority after melee power and doublestrike. Some of this would be avoidable from setting the level range though, so it's sort of covered that way I guess.

It's pretty simple, from what I gather. It basically says "melee power and doublestrike are done, now let's get all the best amp items in slot, then accuracy, then PRR, strength, etc" and goes down the list till all equipment slots are full. But that's not quite how building a gearset really works, if an item fulfills your top priorities but brings nothing else to the table, it very well might not have earned it's place.

I think competence and enhancement amp bonuses are the same, as well. Sometimes the wiki doesn't fully reflect the reality in game. It also put a heavy fort sapphire in my bastard sword of all places and called it a day on fort. And I don't particularly care about insight damage/accuracy because I use a trance, something that's pretty common at endgame. So maybe an option to ignore those (and insight to tactics) could be useful.

I'd maybe lay off the "OPTIMAL: provably the best build, not a guess" type of talk till it's a bit better, personally. It's not terrible, I can usually see why it suggested something, it just makes decisions that are not how players typically assess gearing.

I don't want to come off as too harsh, though. Definitely will be playing around with it more, great job!

This is really good feedback, and after going back through the actual solver logic, I think your read is largely correct.

The solver is currently very literal about the priority order. It maximizes the first stat, locks that result, then moves to the second, third, and so on. That means an item like Memoriam can win a slot because it has the highest Heal Amp value, even if the rest of the item does very little for the overall build. It is mathematically optimizing the requested stats, but it is not yet evaluating an item the same way an experienced player would evaluate the total value of a slot.

The level 13 bracers are a similar issue. If an item is within the selected level range and has a strong enough value, the solver has no reason not to use it. I need better controls for excluding leveling gear, rare or impractical items, and items a player simply would not consider for an endgame set.

You are also right about playstyle-specific stats. The tool currently cannot understand that Insightful Damage, Accuracy, or Tactics may have no value because your build uses a trance. I am working on better ways to exclude or devalue stats that are redundant for a particular build.

The Competence versus Enhancement Heal Amp issue appears to be a data classification problem. The stacking logic is there, but it can only be as accurate as the underlying wiki data and how those effects are categorized. The fortification augment placement is likely another example of the data needing better cleanup and validation.

And yes, the “provably optimal” language is too broad in its current form. It is provably optimal for the specific mathematical model and data it is given, but that is not the same thing as saying it is the best practical gearset for every player. I am going to tighten that language up.

I really appreciate you taking the time to explain where the results felt wrong rather than just saying the tool did not work. This gives me several very specific areas to improve, and it is exactly the kind of testing I was hoping to get.

A way you can improve the item selection may be to convert the stat weighting into a score for each item you evaluate. The benefits are that an item with multiple stats will naturally get a higher score than one with only a single stat. The downside is that you need to re-evaluate the score of each item every time you make a choice for a slot - and you need to reduce the score it gives by the amount you've fulfilled relative to the maximum possible at the given ML. An important thing to keep in mind is that you need to evaluate each type of stat separately, so you can't merge Enhancement and Insightful into the same score weight.

One potential way to score each stat would be to take the priority list, reverse it, then assign an incremental number as the maximum score it can give. For example with (To Hit) > (To Damage) > (To Critical Multiplier) > (To Critical Confirm) > (To Critical Damage) you would assign (To Hit) a maximum score of 5, (To Damage) a 4, and so on. Then during score calculation you divide what the item provides by what is maximally possible at the given ML and multiply that with the maximum possible score. If you pick this particular item, you reduce the maximum possible score for that stat by the calculated score. This allows items that give the same stats but slightly higher to still exist in the loadout, i.e. an item that gives (To Hit +9) will still be able to exist next to an item that has (To Hit +6).

Another improvement is that you generate groups of items first that fulfill one or more of the stat requirements. Enhancement + Insightful is usually stronger than a single item giving just a slightly higher Enhancement bonus. Especially if you can still combine it with Insightful bonus. There are many of such combinations that it currently just ignores, despite them being BiS for several more levels with the items I have.
