DDO Loadout Optimizer: Your best-in-slot gear, *proven by math*

Sook, loving your project — it’s been a blast to play around with.

Two quick observations from testing:

  1. I put in a simple Level 36, THF Rogue dagger build, and the planner gave me the Legendary Cataclysmic Tower Shield as my off‑hand. Pretty funny, but probably not intended.
  2. It would be great to have a toggle to exclude raid gear from the recommendations. A lot of us run non‑raid setups, so having that filter would be super useful.
Keep up the awesome work.

This is something I wish existed in most gear-focused games I play, but know it never really works perfectly in any of them. I tried it out, and yeah, "provably the best build, not a guess" is wrong every time I've tried it, and not just in little either-or scenarios. Seems to straight up not fill gear slots at all and just leave out the preset stat requirements, even when those unfilled gear slots would fulfill said preset stat requirements. Just some instances:
  • Level 15 aasimar scourge, heavy armor, focus on doublestrike and melee power: leaves the armor/weapon slot unfilled
  • Try again, same as the above: the optimizer for some reason has it wear a razorclaw shifter iconic starter set piece of gear
  • Try again, same as the above except add True Seeing in as a preset: it does not equip any True Seeing gear, but also leaves the neck slot unfilled instead of putting on the Family Recruit Sigil
  • Try again, same as the above, this time it does realize to put on the 3-piece Part of the Family set in general, but no weapon, and no rings
Really love that someone is tackling this, and really hope it gets working at some point. There's just too much gear for me to have memorized! I also wish there were an optimizer like this but for character builds. Same problem for me, too many synergies and enhancements and destinies and feats for me to ever know what will unlock and/or synergize with what.

It is really starting to look good.

Similar to Sheltering having a composite nature with prr and mrr - which you just fixed - I expect there are many other similar effects with composite components that do not currently work in the app.

Crown of Summer, Parry, Riposte, Good Luck and Greater Heroism are the ones I have noticed but there likely are far more.

I am curious what your plans are for 3 piece set augments as they currently appear to go unused.

Maybe give the option to pin augments at the start - 3 piece set augments as well as other. Not quite as simple as pinning items I realise that.

It might be handy for helping out if you had a public list of things that have been fixed (eg Sheltering) as well as things you know are not working yet (Eg GMoF, Crown of Summer, 3 piece augments). But I certainly also understand if you prefer not to keep that in public.

A suggestion inspired by https://ddo-gear-planner.netlify.app

When showing how much of a particular effect has been achieved listing the achieved value as well as the maximum possible value would be rather informative. Eg Charisma 30/36.

Doing so would also help us compare your max to the max reported in that app and possibly improve the app if something is wrong or missing.

If you have to pin specific aug sets rather than having it find them, you lose access to what the program is supposed to do for you. The hidden possibilities get even more numinous when you consider set augs.

I know that obviously. However, if it is for the time being not doable I would much prefer to be able to pin augs myself.

Just like I am happy I can pin specific items.

Love the ability to pin specific items, a few points to improve:

1. I couldn't pin a longsword in the offhand, just mainhand.
2. A way to force two weapon fighting would be great, when selecting the single weapon/two weapon option it keeps putting shields or runearms in the offhand.
3. When building for spell crit rate it must not have the typing on augments and set bonuses correct, it does not seem to use the solar crit rate augment at all.
4. This might be too much work, but incorporating crafting on the gem of many facets, or at least allow us to specify what is on there if it is pinned.
5. Related to rare loot and specific GoMF combos, perhaps a section to select either specific rare loot only, or none, and with GoMF select either just limit it to one set bonus or two.
6. The ability to specifically exclude certain bonuses, I think this would only realistically apply to threat related bonuses.

Profane well rounded does not seem to exist properly. I was able to choose well rounded, but it returned zero items with that attribute.

Also, as others have mentioned, it would be nice if there was a way to exclude some items. If deadly is a priority, which it will be for any ranged or melee DPS, the +4 damage Solar Artifact augment is always slotted. I have never seen one of these pulled and can only confirm it exists because I saw one on the shard exchange for 2000 shards. I did a set up pinning a Ravens set and that got around it, but players relying on the tool may not think of that. If players could exclude a rare item or augment that comes up on the first pass and then re-run, I think that would be helpful.

Overall the tool is very cool and fun to mess around with to get ideas.

I would suggest adding Seeker to melee and removing AC as noone but tanks care much for that at cap.
Do not remove AC. Not every character is at cap.
Do not assume you know what "no one" wants.
Do not assume that the desires of the minority are not important.

But please do add Seeker to the Melee and Ranged bundles.

I realise it may be a major ask - if we could import from and export to Maetrim character builder it would come in very handy.

I thats a major piece of work now is not the right time but if its easy and fast (if there is ever such a thing) it would be lovely.

I was thinking the same.
Let me know when you have a settled output format, and I can handle parsing it on my end as an option also. Can chose by file/clipboard etc.
As a note, I would prefer to have the item names be exact matches to those used in the wiki else its a massive look up table to convert from one to the other.

Just to be clear. I am not suggesting to remove AC completely - only to remove it from the melee bundle.
If it is only the desire of the minority it should not be in the bundle - as bundles reflects what the majority wants :)

Okay, I misunderstood. What I should have said is:

Do not remove AC from the melee bundle. Not every melee character is at cap.
And if you include those characters, that means that the majority wants AC included.

Another way of looking at it is: Bundles should reflect what's logical, not what we think the majority (or "no one") may want.
That's why mikarddo rightly said the Melee bundle should include Seeker. (And I include Ranged)

Very similar to an idea I have for a sub-optimizer. Sub-optimizer would seek a set of solutions in the top space, but not the tippy top. Problem is this tends to explode the amount of calculation and information to store but you can chop down the combinatorics dragon by segmenting the problem as much as possible into a series of smaller problems. My idea is first solve all the set/augment combos involving profane and solar etc. Then determine all the stacks of possible attributes, like HP, CON, Force spell power and individually solve for all the gear subsets that hit the top of each attribute, respectively, without any uncessary items in there that don't add anything. So you start not by solving it but by solving like 100+ mini problems. Then you create a tool to quickly as possible look at two or more subsets to see if they are incompatible, like they occupy same slot or they would result in more than two rings. Then use that to construct full sets seeking all the goals. By segmenting the problem, the combinatorics are reduced a bazillion fold compared to the full solution in one go. The result is not a solution but a big set of solutions that you could query without any priority issues. So you can do stuff like say I want DPS in the top percentiles (but not necessarily 100%) and I want good HP, good dodge, good MRR, good PRR, good AC, etc, but not as some trailing priority when its already too late.
The thing is, that some sets exclude wearing certain items to complete the Set.
If one Needs +3 To All Stats. There are only a few items that can accomplish that and would clear the table to look at what else could be added to optimize or reach the floor of your gear layout.
With the introduction of Solar and Lunar augments that does open up more options and variables for sure.

A riddle I would welcome to solve is how to optimize Artifact and Profane bonus(Or Set Bonus) wearing a 5 Piece Legendary Enders Set that (Head,Necklace,Cloak,Belt,Wrists,Gloves,Boots) leaves you with the only Free slots of Armor, Rings and Trinkets and then that leaves Two available spots to add New Gear.
As an Example of Puzzle Tetris.
The only solution I've countered with is that the Set bonus would have to be one of a Ring/s, Trinket and a third gear item that takes from the other gear slots above.
Legendary Perfected Wrath seems to be the only solutuion to free up gear slots, if you use the Trinket and Ring plus one item.

It is fine for me either way and easy click off. So I am happy to leave AC in the bundle even if I consider it less important for leveling as well.

Mikarddo is too nice to be blunt, but I am not. You are wrong Shawn. the melee builds should not auto include AC. The only class building for it is a tank,. Melee is, or should be, ignoring AC. It is a stat that is either super high, or meaningless. If you are not tanking, it is meaningless. Do not confuse newer players or the tool by including it for melee. If someone wants to build a tank, they can manually add AC, or maybe a tank bundle can be added in the future.
