Dwarf and Duergar Builds for Update 80

You can read about what's coming in the Lamannia threads:

Just wanted to jump-start some theory-crafting ideas about how to take advantage of the new racial options. In particular, who can benefit from +1 competence bonus to critical threat range to dwarven axes, heavy picks, or warhammers?

Fighter Vanguard (dwarven axe)

Based on this build.

Stats: STR > CON > INT with enough DEX for Whirlwind Attack + pre-reqs. We'll be using Know the Angles for Battle Trance, hence why INT shouldn't be dumped; the extra skill points are just a bonus.

Enhancements:
  • 41 Vanguard for Tier-5s and capstone (+20% attack speed, free stun attempt on 10% of shield bashes)
  • 17 racial for +1 critical threat range to dwarven axes
  • 11 Kensei for Haste Boost and +1 critical multiplier
  • 6 Harper Agent for Know the Angles
If you have extra APs from tomes and/or racial past lives, you can go deeper into Kensei (Power Surge, Opportunity Attack) or Harper.

Epic Destinies: Rager version uses Tier-5 Divine Crusader w/Mantle + T4 Fury of the Wild, leftover points can go into Unyielding Sentinel or Legendary Dreadnought. Non-Rager w/Precision would use a different configuration, like T5 Crusader + T3 Sentinel + T3 FotW.

Dragonlord (heavy pick or warhammer)

Enhancements:
  • 41 Dragonlord for Tier-5s (+2 crit multiplier etc.) and capstone
  • 22 Ravager
  • 17 racial for +1 critical threat range to heavy pick or warhammer
Can be built for either SWF or TWF; and using either Precision with Might in Order or Power Attack + FotW Rage + Draconic Conviction (in which case don't dump CHA).

Heavy picks are still "only" 18-20/x6 weapons with this configuration (16-20/x6 for Deathnip), so warhammer w/Knight's Training would be the more sensible option (16-20/x5). But if you've been dying to run a new heavy pick build, well, you'll have a new option.

Dark Hunter (warhammer)

Stats: max DEX > CON > INT

Enhancements:
  • 41 Tempest for T5 & capstone
  • 21 Dark Hunter for Opportune Moment
  • 17 racial for +1 critical threat range to heavy pick or warhammer
  • 6 Harper Agent for KtA
That's 85 APs so only doable on a first-lifer with AP tomes. The idea being to take advantage of the sneak attack bonus from Opportune Moment for burst DPS while still having 16-20/x4 crit range with warhammers + Knight's Training. Splitting focus between DEX and INT might look odd given the current trend towards SAD builds; but KtA is cheaper than Horizon Walker's No Step Missed, so going for NSM is only feasible if you've got a lot of racial PLs under your belt.

Swashbuckler (throwing axe)

Except for Nightforge Spike, throwing axe is the only throwing weapon with an x3 critical multiplier. That becomes 15-20/x4 with Swashbuckling + Improved Critical. However that isn't enough to offset what it lacks compared to shuriken and throwing daggers; i.e., extra Doubleshot from Ninja cores + Shuriken Expertise or Simple Thrown Weapon Expertise, the burst DPS bonus from Ten Thousand Stars + Shadow Double or Multitude of Missiles.

One of the Duergar Enhancements is Forge Apprentice: "You gain proficiency with Handaxes, Light Picks, Light Hammers, Throwing Axes, and Throwing Hammers, and consider them Simple Weapons." The latter makes all of them compatible with Vile Chemist bonuses to simple weapons; it should also make throwing axes & hammers compatible with Simple Thrown Weapon Expertise and Multitude of Missiles.

Will this be enough to make throwing axes competitive with daggers which can take advantage of everything in Vistani Knife Fighter too? We'll find out!

My first thought: max-DEX bard 3 / ranger 5 to start for T5 Deepwood Stalker (Improved Archer's Focus, +20% Doubleshot, extra Favored Enemy, etc.) + T3 Horizon Walker (No Step Missed) + T3 Swashbuckling (Dashing Scoundrel) + Forge Apprentice. That's ~70 APs so what else you multiclass and how deep you can go in another tree depends on how many bonus APs you have. Option 1 is Alchemist for Vile Chemist: 6 APs to activate extra Imbue dice. Option 2 is rogue or Arcane Trickster for lots of sneak attacks and possibly more Imbue Dice from Assassin or AT. Option 3 is fighter to load up on Ranged Power, extra feats, and (if you have the APs) Power Surge; for a Mindcleaver this also saves a +1 Lesser Heart of Wood.

Other T5 options: Dragonlord for +2 critical multiplier so throwing axes become 15-20/x5 (as do handaxes if going for a SWF+thrower hybrid); Vile Chemist for Chemical Weapon (you eventually hit the attack speed cap without it, but it may help for leveling).

if you are willing to spend a +1 heart, and the AOE ranged sunder attack opens up the DL capstone ability (it should from everything i read),

20 Dragon Lord Duergar Mindcleaver sounds pretty strong.
Build it as a SWF + THF dwarven waraxe with +2/+1 crit profile (+3/+1 with patience)

and you get a build that gets:
- Pretty competent single target DPS (swf attack speed and big critical profile)
- Very good AOE clearing (strikethrough + quick cutter + dragon roar + extra helpless dmg from duergar)
- Instakill for high reaper questing
- Reliable CC
- Strong defenses & self heal

As a character with a lot of Past lifes i'd go for:

41 DL
22-24 Ravager (Get the +MP attacks and several cores)
13 Stalwart defender (Stalwart stance & +6 STR)
-------
I have 19 racial AP available so i can pick every goodie in the duergar tree with no real AP spent.

I believe this should be a very strong build that i am really excited to try.

Duergar Dark Hunter using twin Kindlings (Vacuum + Dust) is the route I'm going to go.

Dex to Hit and Damage from Tempest and Tier 5 + Capstone from Dark Hunter.

FYI you don't need a +1 Lesser Heart of Wood just to switch archetypes, a regular LHoW will work. Just remember to pick the archetype at level one, NOT your Iconic again. You can also switch during an Epic Reincarnation IIRC.

Other than Duergar Shape, do they offer anything else to a scimitar build?

Off-topic, but now that DEX to hit & damage are inherent to all light weapons including scimitars, I've been toying with DEX-based pure Kensei build ideas. I just haven't found anything I really like.

Could go silvanus bear, 12d/7fvs/1barb or simiilar.

Or just old faithful 15p/5dl - easy on a low lifer too

I'll probably run 16 dragon lord 4 dragon disciple, t5 dl t4 dd t3 shintao, str based, sun stance, twf warhammers, offhand dov/fom warhammer
+1 threat +2 multi +2 on 19-20 (1 from sun stance, 1 from warhammer), has autocrit from hand of harm, has doublestrike from quick strikes in shintao, giga dc jade strike, roar, the whole shebang and enough feats to buy a farm where every cow has slicing blow, hamstring and imp sunder while also getting supreme tactical master for +8 dc from 16 dl.

+20% helpless from racial tree and +15% helpless dmg from roar also pairs up nicely.

Minimum spend is 36 dl 22 (23) dd 14 shintao (72-73) + 17-19 duergar => you need 9-11 racial points to get the main perks of the duergar tree to go with it, as you need multiple things from the final tier in the racial tree - t4 dwarven weapons and size mastery - duergar shape iv would also be nice, but i cant afford it cuz not racial comp enough. Better if you have more ofc, more points would allow you to grab the good stuff in ravager or more from shintao on top. Universal points or spare points can go to harper agent core, or vkf for undead FE to go with racial tree FE and dragon FE from dragonlord for +6 dmg vs many many main enemies in the game.

Feats gonna be something like... twf line, imp crit, knight training, dodge/mobi/spring, power attack, slicing blow / hamstring / imp sunder / tactical supremacy = 13 feats; you have 7 in heroics + 2 dragon arts from DD + 6 bonus from fighter lvls => 15 feats: so you still have more for tactical mastery / greater weapon spec or wwa or deflect arrows from dragon art feat or whatever you want to go for. I'll probably pick wwa and deflect, or if new expansion has lots of high ac/fort enemies, maybe take precision too on top of PWA and just swap as needed, or help out with stance feats so not too much strain on epic feats to cover to get master of forms.

Idk, i'll wing it - I barely have enough racial points to dabble with the idea. Looks fun on paper though. Not gonna buy the iconic version, or the ultimate version of the expansion.

This sounds pretty nice, but imho DD-monk splash is too AP heavy for "little" benefit, also, me preferring heavy armored builds
I think i will give the good ol' Dragon Lord 20 with capstone in Ravager & DL tier 5, but this time with a +1 threat for warhammer.
it should be a 15-20 x5 (before patience if we want that, i usually don't take it on TWF because it feels bad.
I have 19 racial AP (max for now until Duergar hits)
So the planned build would be:
41 Ravager (Intimidate-based AOE insta-kill that works on highest difficulties)
37 DL (cores 1-5, tier 5s)
2 AP (+3 universal ) left
Would probably go DC tier 5 and grab the 1d6 Law damage on each attack per Epic or Legendary Level, scaling with 200% Melee or Ranged Power.
And go DoV warhammer + calamitous crafted/undying warhammer.
Honestly sounds like a very strong build that competes with the 5 DL 15 Pal (at least for 1 target DPS) with a gazillion feats available
Dust/Ash and watch bosses melt.

Yea, I don't think the dragon disciple variant will be meta. I'm a big fan of monk stuff and this race is warhammer coded, so I'm kinda predisposed to go that way even with the DD tree sucking big fat balls - it's the cost of doing business. Shame DD is so bad for martial stuff but it is what it is.

Before this, that type was basically only handwraps/kukri/longswords (I'm a big fan of the handwraps variants), duergar opens up the dd way to do it better. 14/5/1 was the previous good way to get +1/+2 and +1/+2 on 19-20 - duergar makes that "less bad" with the warhammer variant - there's a decent amount of flat dmg there and hand of harm with warhammers is really nice.

The 20 dl with 41 ravager 37 dl will definitely be good, as will the 18/1/1 variants that drop the ravager capstone/spending in exchange for more dmg. Now those builds are somewhat less kukri-coded.

I think the barbs with dwarven waraxe going swf + two hand speciality will also be fun to quest on - hopefully they add some absurdly powerful or unique dwarven waraxe in the next expansion raid that will better enable that style.

Agree!
And tbh one even thinks about vanguard, so we can get use out of the +1 threat (vanguard really only gets +1 mult through kensai, so getting the range on racial tree is very nice) problem with vanguard is you have no imbue & have to get a traditional trance, so it's immediately worse than DL...

I think the vanguard laid out by unbogwah might be fun enough to play if you have enough racial points to get to t4 kensei without losing trance from harper.

But yeah, vanguard kinda lacks oomph. I'm not sure what that could even be, but it just doesn't have a big wow factor of any kind. It just is and bashes away. That said with reed the wind + shield smash and guard up stacking fast, it could prove to be a fairly tanky dps character even on a lowlife that gives up the awesomeness that is opportunity attack. Those attacks have *big* dmg modifier and being able to stack it up fast is very good.

Not particularly.

I just like the idea of a Duergar Drizzt-type of toon instead of a run-of-the-mill Drow one (so flavor, really). The enlarged version is appealing, but for a different reason (mostly more flavor). I've also never played a Dark Hunter before, and I thought it fit Duergar thematically.

I want to run the alchemist vile chemist thrown axe build they kind of hint at in the patch notes
probably going to do 15 alch/3 bard/2rogue
11swash/11assassin/36 vile chemist/24 harper agent
only thing i havent decided on yet is picking up some strength gear and adding brutal throw into the feats would offer me +7 dmg over shot on the run which is +6 ranged power.
shot on the run increases the ranged power by 1.5% where as brutal throw increases the dmg bonus by +7 (6.5%)

If I was attempting to take advantage of the +1 Threat Range on a Dwarven Waraxe, I'd roll a SWF/Two Handed Mastery Dragon Lord for the +2 Crit Multi enhancement. You're 1 mult behind the pick with a better base die and strikethrough.

The main advantages for warhammer wielding melee ranger would be adding giants back into your FE list, and not having to spend 21 points in Deepwood Stalker.

Paladins and Clerics can also take advantage of the Sylvanis threat range with mauls and a racial tree that supports it.

From what I'm seeing, the Duergar racial tree doesn't really support Mauls (even though it should). All I see it supporting are Dwarven Waraxes, Picks, and Warhammers.

I hate playing druid, so I'm going to go with the iconic at 1 or 2 levels, and do my druid for the rest and finally get my druid lives out of the way. Maybe with the dwarven axe and stuff, druid may even be fun for me this time through. I am however definately going to try out duergar alchemist, taking med armor feat up front and use my mithral half plate for lesser arcane failure. and crafted gear for alchemist. As far as weapons I don't know yet, but with the super high dps of the alchemist, and the durability of the duergar with med armor, it should be a lethal combo and may not even need a weapon that much. especially after getting to level 12. Exception for main bosses.

It's says in the release notes that it's a cut-n-paste of the dwarven version, and buried in the dwarven description is:

Pick and Hammer Training: +1 to hit and damage with heavy picks, light hammer, light picks, mauls, throwing hammers, and warhammers.

Now, if you're saying that the enhancement is broken, then yeah, we should get Tonquin on that immediately! :)

I'm torn between doing a heroic maul build with sylvanus and the dwarven axe s&b build.
If going mauls, any ideas of wis based melee cleric, pure, axl style, or 14 war cleric and 6 dragonlord for +1 range and +2 mult.
Any opinions on the second?
