It seems that the account is only locked during the transfer. For most of the time it is in the queue waiting for its turn to be processed and during that time you can use your account. You may be punted however if the queue gets to your transfer request and starts processing.

I started just before midnight. Checked this morning and none of those characters had transferred as of 7:45 this morning.
Unless the queue is taking longer than 8 hours, I think the transfer failed and I just wasn't ever notified.
Also, even for my successful transfer I was never notified. Many I've spoke with are reporting the same.

Do you have over a million toon to transfer? Because they will ghost the server after 2 years (or more if they change the deadline).

Agreed 110% !!There's an hour glass for a reason!
Seriously though the transfer isn't critically limited by the capacities of the servers at either end but by the capacity of the "pipe" between them, i.e. the transfer process capacity it's-self.
So yeah, it's total PITA to get through the pipe, for sure, but that's not reflective of the server capacity once we get through.

I did an experiment and sent over a handful (7 or so) mules at once after sending my first two separately.
They got done within the estimated time when I started (got email) and I even finally got an email about the second character. Never got an email about my first, but she is on destination server just fine.
One character error-ed out but it didn't list the name, just a long list of numbers.
I will do my mains one at a time, but seems like sending all mules over in a batch works for the most part.

I was wondering how reliable the email notifications will be. I always got them for HC transfers. I would hate to be waiting when the transfer is actual complete.
Questions for DEVs:
1. Does logging in to a game world but not logging in a character put in progress transfers at risk?
2. If it doesn't does the appearance of a character in the roster mean all transfer activity is complete?
3. Does starting a transfer from a different source server but to the same destination server as a transfer in progress put the in progress transfer at risk?

For me, the transfer wizard is useless while my screen resolution is high (ie. 3400x2200). I have to drop my screen resolution to around 1920.x1080 to see the list of worlds/character etc.

1. The risk is relatively small. If you happen to be logged ONTO the sending or receiving server when your time in the queue is up, it's possible that you could get bumped to the back of the queue, and basically start over on the 8 hour process. It's not advised to be on either server when your estimated time in the queue is close.
2. Usually when they're on the receiving server, it's complete. If it failed, they will be on the original server. You can get on to peek occasionally (but see #1)
3. I haven't been able to start a 2nd transfer from the same account while one is pending. Every time I've tried, I can't get any world's to populate (and it gets to that screen much much faster)

OK this is ridiculous, I packed and transferred my main character (and only my main character) at about 8:00pm GMT+1. It is now nearly 18 hours later and I have no email, I cannot transfer any other character as the wizard says no worlds are available, I have no guild as my main was the guild leaded, I have no shared bank etc. The way standing stone have designed this is a farce. There really should have been some limit on how many characters can be packed and transferred per account in any 24-hour period rather than this stupid free for all.

If it's an older character, it's very possible that the transfer failed and the email saying so just didn't send. (this happened to me and several others)
Try to get on and transfer them again. I'm still on 6 hours after my second attempt.

SO my 5 transfers yesterday evening - 4 hours-ish
This AM's 7 transfers - like 4 minutes
This AMs second round of transfers - Still waiting 2+ hours

packed and initiated transfer over 6 hours 30 minutes ago, no email, character not arrived on destination.
There is a party at my local brewery this afternoon, if everyone is sober, I'll know who arranged it.

The email system for failed and successful transfers isn't reliable. Get on the server and see if it's finished? It's possible it failed, as well, and you'll have to restart it.
