I'm not in the EU, so I can't sign this petition, but if you are in the EU, I highly recommend it.
Basically, many gaming companies are adopting a model where, once they stop supporting a game, they do everything in their power to remove it's existence and prevent anyone from playing it in any way whatsoever. This petition will not force gaming companies to continue support forever, nor does it force them to share server code / IP... what it does try to do is make it so that if/when support for a product ends, the product can still be used by those who purchased it.
Here is a youtube video that explains it much better than I can, and here is the link to the petition as well.
If you're in the EU, please consider signing this and spreading the word! If you're not in the EU, don't sign (could have it thrown out as fraugulent) but do tell any family and friends that are in the EU about it.
Yes, it's framed for games, but this practice can (and is) spreading to other sectors as well. Many cars have subscriptions now to activate features, and it can easily become a reality that you purchase a non-game product and when the company wants to, can essentially take that product away from you and prevent you from using what you paid for. Game companies doing this is ground zero, the testing grounds for what companies can get away with. Stopping it here will make it harder (if not impossible) for other companies not involved with games from trying to do similar things in the future.
