yes, but not yet. first thing first, sort the transfer out.

then, a code? no, absolutely no code, but a massive amount of old content just be made f2p. forever. now that's advertising, the idea of a code is so time-limited, it totally defeats the purpose.

I support the code but tend to agree it's a total let down when you miss the code, like eff this levels of let down. Just make most of the old AF content free AF.

The code makes sense in the "Come back now and use this code and the game will open up a ton of free content for you !!" type advertising.

As opposed to "Yeah its all free so come back whenever".

Problem is its either VIP or bust at this point with all the old AF packs to buy.

Being greedy, I would say
Add a good group of quest packs into the basic expansion, all quest in the second tier expansion, and add the first 3 expansion with the ultimate colector edition. If SSG is feeling generous I would add all expansions until saltmarch. and a GOOD sale in every expansion too.

This is a truly terrible idea.

The server migration will heavily stress both machines and players. There will be unanticipated problems. Customer service representatives will be overwhelmed. Players will scramble for character and guild names. We may see large numbers of returning players join the fray, exactly as happened with Middle Earth. Into that maelstrom of chaos, you want to inject a bunch of new players, ensuring they have an extremely negative first impression of the game? This suggestion is borne of naive thoughtlessness, a desire to sabotage the process, or pure madness.

Dedicated, long term players are best equipped to handle the challenges this migration will present. Let them secure their names. Let them reestablish their guilds. If a server overloads, let them naturally balance server populations through voluntary migrations. Let the people at Standing Stone Games determine what population numbers are viable for new servers infused with old super characters. Let them determine if we need more servers or processing capacity because of returning players. Let them solve technical issues that arise.

Once established players have settled in and the people at Standing Stone Games have resolved major problems, determine how much additional population the servers can safely handle. If conditions are fertile, open the doors and welcome new players to healthy worlds full or promise and hope.

We are talking about a delay of a few months at most. Please be patient.

Another attempt by free-to-play players to get their entertainment for free.
Most people on these forums already own everything and yet still support the DDO free code. I don't know if you have ever tried, but it is very difficult to convince someone to play DDO. You pretty much have to hide from them that it will take several hundred dollars if they want to play the entire game. Even if they bring back the DDO free code and all the old expansions for 99 points there are still 3 quest packs and 4 expansions left to buy. So SSG has plenty of opportunity to make money from content (and even more money from quality of life improvements like storage) from new players that use the DDO free code and get the older 4 expansions for 99 store points.

I would wait until the transfers are done; maybe in a couple months whenever the expansion releases. While new players are good for long term game stability, I don't think having competition for long standing names vs a bunch of brand new players on the new worlds would be good.
I agree that it would be best to wait until after the transfer window (or at least until after most people have transferred even if it isn't the end of August yet. I've suspected they might bring it back for the 20th Anniversary, but I would prefer they not wait that long to do so.

As a business, they're balancing two things I think.

1. Bring in new players and help the long term health of the game.

2. The vets are waiting with their 2nd/3rd/4th/5th/6th accounts for this, they'd potentially pay hundreds of dollars for the content rather than getting it for pennies on the dollar with this code.

If someone knows (or even thinks) the code is coming, they're going to be much less likely to buy xpacs or normal content. This is why they never even hint at it.

The fact that it's been so long makes me think they're leaning towards not even doing it, as late stage MMOs tend to err on the side of milking hardcore "whales" rather than focusing on growth. I'm very happy to be wrong on this one, though.

I've always found it odd how the non xpac content is either TOTALLY FREE at random, rare times....or full price. Almost never anything in between, most stuff goes on sale but the actual content never seems to. Very weird business model.

Especially weird because we used to have a quest pack for 75% off every week when the DDO store was first introduced. Old stuff should definitely be on a big sale periodically (or even frequently).

My best guess would be laziness, I agree there's really zero reason to not have sales on stuff like tangleroot gorge and necro3. But maybe it takes some small amount of manpower to setup so perhaps it's deemed not worthwhile.

I feel like maybe it would be a good idea to see how the servers handle the new load before adding even more players. Then again it would be a good opportunity to make new players stick around when they see more players around and feel that the game is actually active.

I am a VIP because I can afford it but I am happy to play with people who cannot so the more people have access to content the better!
I'm a VIP also and play with many Free-to-Play players and have no issue with it. But the game does require revenue to exist. So SSG certainly should be charging money where they can.
