Game settings resetting / not saving after latest update

Since updating to the latest version, the game is now resetting graphics and related settings on every restart.

I launch the client, it gives me the pop-up warning about Directx11, then asks me to download graphic files. I get the intro movie, and find all my graphics settings are set to default. Interestingly, my custom UIs are not appearing in the drop-down menu in the UI tab, so it seems that DDO is having trouble reading that folder.

Things I have already tried that have NOT worked:

  1. Turning off / signing out off OneDrive
  2. Deleting the UserPreferences file in the Documents\Dungeons and Dragons Online folder - doing this now makes me agree to the TOS every single time, so it seems DDO is incapable of recreating that file.
  3. Checking / unchecking 'Read Only' on the DDO folder (tried both, no difference)
  4. Checking / unchecking 'Reset the game display settings' in the DDO launcher (tried both, no difference)
  5. Reinstalling game files via the launcher repair options
  6. Restarting PC, more than once.
  7. Running the game with admin rights (obviously).

After each of these solutions, I run the game, changed some settings, then closed and restarted the client - and every single time, everything just got reset back to square one.

Any help, please?

Have you checked to see if your anti-virus software is blocking DDO from writing those files?

Oh my god, THANK YOU! This was indeed the problem. No idea why that suddenly started being an issue, but this has indeed fixed it.

For anyone reading this (including my future self), here's how to check if Windows security is blocking DDO:

Go to:

  1. Windows Security
  2. Virus & threat protection
  3. Ransomware protection
  4. Manage ransomware protection

If Controlled folder access is ON:

  • click Allow an app through Controlled folder access
  • add:
    • DNDLauncher.exe
    • dndclient.exe
You can also temporarily turn Controlled Folder Access OFF just to test whether DDO launches correctly.

It sounds like something is either locking your ...\Documents\Dungeons and Dragons Online\UserPreferences.ini file OR has changed the default NTFS permissions on it or one of the parent folders in this path - \Users\<username>\Documents\Dungeons and Dragons Online\.

  1. Right-click the ini file, select Properties, click the Security tab, then click the Advanced button.
  2. When the Advanced Security window opens, click the Effective Access tab, then click the "Select a user" link.
  3. In the Select a User or Group window, type in your username, click the Check Names button and verify it converts your username to the PC\username format and underlines it, then click OK.
  4. Back on the Advanced Security window, click "View Effective Access" and verify that you have Full Control.

Edit - I see you responded that it was Windows Defender blocking it right before I submitted my reply. Glad you got it fixed.

I'll leave this here in case anyone else searching the forums comes across this thread and it turns out to not be anti-virus inflicted.
