Gamma Control in Windowed Mode

A recent update broke my gamma control in windowed mode. Still works in full screen, but in windowed, it ignores the gamma setting entirely and always shows the default level - which is pitch-black in anything but full sunlight

I'm running a GTX 1060 with the Nvidia controls app, is there an override setting or something that's preventing it from respecting the setting?

Try adjusting the 'desktop' gamma setting in the Nvidia App (under Adjust Desktop Color Settings). I don't recall a program specific gamma setting for DDO in the App.

You may have to change it back after closing the game though if it makes your desktop too bright.

You can also try manually editing the userpreferences file (in your documents folder).
Look for these 2 lines (put what number value you want for your gamma setting):

AllowGammaChanges=True
Gamma=1.51

It's hit or miss if that'll work you or not; but for some folks manually forcing those values in the preference file works for them.

I've also heard that Alt+Entering from windowed to full, changing gamma, and Alt+Entering back works for some situations.

For a big help in darker areas like underdark or rainbow, open your UserPreferences.ini file, which can either be found in your DDO installation directory or the folder %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Dungeons and Dragons Online.
Open it in notepad, look under the [Render] section and you'll see a label for AmbientLightBoost. Set that to anything above 0 (you can experiment to find a level you like. I personally like 1.00, others like 2.00) like this: AmbientLightBoost=2.00, save it, and restart the client.
All of a sudden the Underdark isn't so dark, and quests like Rainbow in the Dark can be navigated without the Torch. The big benefit is that you don't get major gamma white-washing in bright settings.
