Guild Etiquette and Advice for Noobs?

Hello,

I've been invited to a couple of guilds on different servers and they have been pretty different. Both had a cargo hold with a Banker, Barkeep, Mailbox, and Auctioneer. One had a minor experience shrine (?) (not sure if that's what it is called), some have target dummies or other things.

I've noticed one guild loses all those things in the cargo hold for an extended period of time, which is kind of frustrating. Which leads to..

  • Why do all these things keep disappearing and reappearing randomly? Is it random?
  • If I wanted to leave a guild and join another, what is the etiquette behind it?
  • If I wanted to pick my own guild and request to join, can I do that?
  • How do I actually leave a guild? What is the process?
  • If I can pick my own guild, how do I find the guilds on my server and their stats/how active they are, so I can join one that is more competent?
  • What are your requirements for joining any guild?
Thanks!

you can join any guild that offers you an invite, no requirements necessary

you can choose a guild and request an invite

You can leave a guild anytime, that option becomes available after you join a guild, the social panel/dialog offers you a guild panel

There is no etiquette to leaving a guild. You simply quit. You are offered the choice of whether to leave "on good terms". This impacts the amount of guild xp the guild loses when you quit

Cargo hold amenities have a duration (maybe a week?). You can extend the initial duration up to something like a month (the guild chests have a different initial duration IIRC). Some people are lazy about renewing them (it me).

You just leave the guild. Should be an option on the Social panel at the bottom.

Yes

See above.

I have no idea how you might see a guild's stats.

I don't have any requirements. I'm in a one-person guild so whatever I say goes and I argue with myself all the time about it.

My advice isn't so much about what guilds offer or what they say... Rather, it's how they treat their members and what "qualifications" and "restrictions" they have for joining.

Guilds that are too focused or pursuing the Meta, tend to ignore the needs of its members. While those that are too casual, tend not to help players learn and progress at all. Both situations are bad, so it's best to find a guild that supports you, helps you, and can from time to time pursue the Meta just for the fun of it. After all, it's the connections you'll have with your guild that will make or break the experience.

I create guilds all the time for storage, buffs, and travel.

6 accounts is the max small guild bonus to guild xp, which is good to know for leveling a guild fast (i.e. Guild Storage II is at level 50). Use guild renoun pots before turning in sagas for guild xp when leveling fast. Keep in mind you can get around guild renoun ransack by turning in sagas :)

It IS pretty stupid that those amenities wear off. I wish there was a better way to see the remaining duration too. The interface to see hookpoints is clunky and ugly as hell also.
the devs could create an active noticeboard in the cargobay displaying such information for each [temporary] amenity

Of all reasons to leave a guild, cargo hold stuff disappearing has to be way down at the bottom of the list. You may need to be officer to replace those, but individual people replace those. There is no essence-of-guild that does so when guilds are "good".

About etiquette:
It is good of you to ask actually. It is your choice how you do it of course but I always appreciate if people say something before they leave. They don't need to explain themselves but a short "goodbye, see you around" goes a long way in my book. That said I am in a small guild and we kind of know each other even in real life. In big anonymous guilds it might be just fine to leave without saying anything.
In the end you have to decide how close you are to the members.

Cheers,
Titus

I agree with Titus. Leaving without saying goodbye is very rude. It doesn't take that much to say goodbye and wish your former guildmates good luck. And when you leave, do it on good terms so the guild loses as little renown as possible.

Raising your own guild isn't easy. Think carefully before you jump into it. For some people, it's the right thing to do, but keep in mind that it's a lot of work.

There kinda sorta is, though it's only visible to officers and the leader, you have to click on the "Hookpoint access button" first, then a bunch of glowing squares appear on the ground where amenities can be placed. When an amenity is already placed, the square will be colored. Green means a lot of time left, yellow means not much time left, red means it's going to expire soon (I forget the exact values in days and hours for the color changes), and if you then stand on the glowing squares, a pop up akin to GM text will appear showing exactly how much time is left for that specific amenity. I know this isn't a proper notice board that shows all of them at once, but the information is technically available.

Cargo amenities at full capacity last one month. If the leader doesn't have time to replace them once a month, he should appoint some officers to help him.

Virginia could offer to do this for the leader, explaining that it would be convenient to always have the cargo hold active.

If you approach an amenity when the display is active, it tells you the exact time remaining.

That said, I never check it; when they run out, I replace them and that's it. At most, the cargo hold can go a few hours without amenities, because I usually log in every day. And if not, my guild has plenty of officers who can do that too.

Suggesting more officers to the leader and offering herself for the position could be a solution for Virginia, instead of leaving the guild, if she's comfortable there.

As for joining another guild, Virginia, it's easy. Just look for an ad for guild recruitment, or ask a member of a guild you see in-game. Every guild is different and has different expectations of its members.

Some are happy anarchies like mine, others expect guild members to play guild raids and leveling groups, etc. Every guild is a different world.

If you play with people in-game and ask them about their guild and such, you can get an idea.

Another option is to look at the guild recruitment section of this forum, or even post a thread there explaining why you're looking for a guild and what you expect from that guild (e.g., you want to raid, or you want to play heroics with people, or you're asking for a guild that doesn't have time requirements, etc.)

As Titus said above- the fact you are even considering these things, already makes you the kind of person that many guilds would want.

I recently left the guild that I was in for a few years. It was not an easy decision, but I think it was the correct one- for me. I sent a letter to the leader, deputy, and a few other members that I ran with; along with a few people I recall being helpful and friendly toward me. Though I'm sure I forgot a bunch (Sorry guys!). Essentially, I was just giving them a heads up, and passing on my gratitude for hosting me there all this time. It can be as simple as that.

But if you've gotten to know some guild members over a long period- then perhaps it's better to have a more meaningful conversation with those people, before departing. Otherwise, just saying "thanks, and good luck" also does the trick :)

With the 64-bit servers on the horizon- it's important to decide which one suits you best. If ping is a sticking point, for example- that will, necessarily, have a large bearing on which guild to join. You should also inquire with the ones that have sent you invites, as to what their plans are going forward.

Actually, just talking to prospective guild members/leadership groups is probably the best thing you can do. Get to know them more. Ask as many pertinent questions as you need to. I think most guilds appreciate that. It also helps them determine if you are a good fit for them. For example:

  • Do they have a list of guild rules? What are they?
  • What do they expect from you, as a member? Will you have any particular duties?
  • What time zone are guild members most active in?
  • How many active players are there in the guild?
  • Are you expected to be very active yourself? Reasonably active? Or are they very relaxed about your activity level?
  • Do they accept alts?
  • Are they more focused toward high Reaper play at cap, or on chugging along aboard the TR train? Maybe just flower sniffing? Or a bit of everything!
  • Do they do raiding? What, if any, are the requirements for tagging along?
  • Do they use Discord to communicate inside/outside the game? Is this very important to them, or completely optional?
  • What languages do they speak/allow within their communication channels?
  • Do they allow discussion on sensitive topics, such as politics and religion?
  • Do they allow swearing, or light-hearted banter?
  • Do they encourage Roleplay? A lot, or just a little bit?
  • What is their policy regarding guild chests?
  • Do they ship Ross and Rachel?
Okay, maybe that last one isn't super important...

But you get the gist, I hope. :)

Take a look at all the various recruitment posts on the forums here, on Reddit (r/ddo), and on the official DDO Discord (https://discord.gg/dCcpzS2k) to get a better sense of what sort of guilds are out there.

Hope you find a good fit!

Every hook point in cargo hold can be duplicated with hold rooms @ other decks.

cargo hold emenities should have no timer.

I understand - But I also think it shows how involved a guild is and/or how active they are. If I go a week without anything showing up in the cargo bay, that seems a bit weird or like the guild isn't very active. But maybe that's my lack of experience.
