Guys, be patient. Wait for the 64-bit servers.

The Nameless One

What can change the nature of a man ?
Watch Cord@4 with Tolero...

Tolero was positively glowing about the 64-bit servers like it was the holy grail was just located and we're all about to be immortal/healed i.e. Indiana Jones.

Basically, the stress test went WAAAAAAY beyond expectations. (I told them the hardware was the problem a zillion times ... read my past posts! but thats neither here or there now)

And so they are light-speeding the integration of 64-bit technology and the transfer of our characters to these brand new servers in their brand new state-of-the-art datacenters in Las Vegas.

They still need to resolve:

1.) Guild transfers

2.) Bank and Monster Manual transfers (maybe they'll just wipe the monster manual for everyone and start over)

3.) Character names (I will absolutely quit if I lose my main's name).

The transfer itself will probably be automatic as the 32-bit servers ultimately shuts down. months and months of work (possibly up to a year to complete who knows?

Soooo, it's happening. We're all going to sail to the Undying lands of Lagless and be happy for it!

From what I've seen on Cormyr, there are no reasons to switch to 64 bit servers. 🙄

Character names should be easy. First to xfer gets the name. Others get -1 etc.
And how many players would agree to have "-1" in their names ? 😏

Some of us are stuck with it after the transfer, because it bugged out. For many of my characters, the game believes there's already a character with that name on the server, and so I got stuck with a -1 after the name.

But there is no such character - when I added them to my friends list right after transfer to check who it was, it was my own character from the old server in the guild I was in there. A guild whose name I then proceeded to reuse to make the new guild.

Might be confusing. Let's make an example: (name is just made up for this example)

I transferred Gimp from Ghallanda to Orien. When it gets to Orien, it's now called Gimp-1. I try to add Gimp to my friends list to see who it is. It lists Gimp as the exact race and levels as my own character, and in the guild I was in on Ghallanda. That guild did not exist (yet) on Orien, because I then proceeded to make it on Orien - so it couldn't have existed before that.

Soooo many bugs with guild transfers.... as well as "WAI" stuff that really ought not to work that way.

So yeah, 64bit server sounds OK. But there's a LOT of stuff to be fixed before it's a good idea to consolidate servers. And in the mean time, we get a further split player base.

I think the vast majority are mature enough to understand and accept that as a small sacrifice should it happen to them.
Sacrifice for what ?
I've been on Cormyr, I saw no reasons to switch. Why should I lose my character's name for nothing ?! 😡

I already see, know and play with people with such names.
If a person decided to transfer, it's up to him to deal with the consequences.
It's a completely different matter when the game forces everyone to change the names of their characters.

I wasn't on Cormyr and everything that I've heard suggests that 64-bit is a massive improvement. These servers are the future of DDO and while they deny it the reality is 32-bit servers have a shelf life now.

There will be multiple servers which will give you plenty of time to reserve your character name(s).

I dunno about going better than expected…. In Smugglers Rest we lagged the hell out of our instance to Slide Show status, and FPS got hammered down to 19. Is that acceptable???

Still a log of Lag Fixing to do.

64-bit isn't a magic bullet. It's not going to fix everything. It's just going to fix the ambient lag which is currently making it very difficult if not impossible to find specific sources of lag. Considering one test event on 64-bit was sufficient for them to start identifying long-standing sources of lag that were previously impossible to identify I feel very good about the tech.

I believe you may be in the minority if you do not see the promise that 64 bits servers make. I was definitely given hope when hearing Tolero on Friday at 4. If you have not watched that yet I suggest you do as thats what I am basing my optimism on.

Why do you believe everyone has to change names? Only a very small percentage are likely to have the same name and end up on the same server.

Wow... SSG Welcome to the 21st century.
I mean its not like they just invented 64 bit servers.
They should have been on this a decade ago. About time.
Actually I'm just happy the game is still actively managed and updated.

No complaints from me about possibly changing character names, though it would be beneficial to append a unique account name and let people name their characters whatever they want (with an account surname).

The first server named Cormyr will not be transferable to it. It will be ViP only and no transfers and it is located in Las Vegas. If/when other servers are added they may be located in other areas. There was talk of a possible server in Europe.

The transfer itself will probably be automatic as the 32-bit servers ultimately shuts down. months and months of work (possibly up to a year to complete who knows?

They said in the Friday at Four that transfers would probably be free to the new servers if/when they roll them out.

I have the same problem on Orien. I transferred from Ghallanda, got a "-1" added to my name, and found out that a character with the same name, in a guild with exactly the same name as mine on Ghallanda, was already there. I opened a ticket and received the response that everything was fine with that and they don't want to do anything. 😫
I hope that this problem will be solved on the new server

While Tolero was optimistic Cormyr will be open for its intended purpose by year's end and remain available after the Lantern in the Mists event, when it comes to what will become the replacements for the current 32-bit servers is still far enough off that she did not give a timeframe for that.

Remember, Cormyr is a transfer-off only server where you start new characters from scratch, much like the hardcore server. There's a big difference between that and a transfer-on server where you can move existing characters to like the new 64-bit ones will be. A lot of work has to be done from now until it's time to start transferring people off 32-bit servers onto 64-bit servers while retaining the things you lose when you currently transfer a character from one 32-bit server to another.

There's nothing wrong with looking forward to the 64-bit server transfers, but personally I'd reserve my optimism until SSG officially comments on when that's going to happen, perhaps in next year's Producer's Letter.

Of course, the 64-bit servers are not a "silver bullet." For example, if you're expecting reduced latency and better graphical performance from these servers, you might be disappointed because server performance doesn't directly address those issues.

I didn't participate in the developer stress test on Cormyr, but I did test a legendary Shroud, and that test was very promising. Therefore, I am hopeful that we will see significantly less lag on the 64-bit servers. This hope is further strengthened by what I’ve gathered from Tolero, as it seems there is a lot of potential to further improve the performance of the 64-bit servers.

As for the name issue, I think you have a good chance of keeping your character names on the new servers. Additionally, there’s also the possibility of claiming names that are currently held by players who no longer play DDO.

That said, I would recommend implementing a name reservation system to prevent players from occupying names just to troll others.

Based on what Tolero mentioned, I’m also cautiously optimistic about the possibility of getting an EU server. If that happens, it could significantly reduce latency for me and other EU players, which would be fantastic!

It was a great improvement overall. A lot more instant response to actions all around. From banking, to combat, to teleporting. If DDO is still around by the release of these servers, I’ll be excited.

Glad you said the name thing. Solar power is just the brightest crayon in the box lol.
