Death removes the toon from the board. If that bothers you, kill him in the last day before the server restart.

That's interesting. I was planning on killing it today anyway after filling the last lute and regearing with banked non-fey gear.
How does that work for people that actually want to be on the boards? Do they have to live all the way to event-end or are they re-added on the close of the event?

They have to have never died when the event ends to be on the final leaderboards.
I believe they must have a winter lite in their possession too, so if you hand all of then in you will lose your code of valor mark.

You can get a second one after handing in if lute-slotted or in-inventory is required for the final board, but that seems odd. You do not need a lute equiped to keep your valor mark; I unequip to ensure motes don't spawn on the bot.
I've gotten extra lutes so my xp'ing char can be the one to spawn motes (not the bot at the zoneline that I'm not watching).

I handed all mine in. I still have the Vow of Glory, am on the leaderboard (last I checked), and can still make progress on the leaderboard.
Afaik you only lose the Vow of Glory if you die, which then also removes you from the leaderboard. There is a funny interaction here: a guildmate of mine was on the leaderboard a number of times with the same name, but different characters. They deleted and remade without dying, and I assume that is why they were never scrubbed from the leaderboard.
- incidentally there is now another character on Cormyr leaderboard who is in several places with the same name.

That's just some rumor (and/or trolling) that spread the day the event came out (like anyone was done with 5x lanterns within hours of the event launching). I haven't heard anyone verify having that happen.

Toons just need to be on the leaderboard on the day the event closes to collect the data, since if they died beforehand, they'll have dropped off the leaderboard. You don't need to own any lute. You just need to be on the leaderboard, and for that, you can't have died. It's that simple.
If you die even once, that toon is removed from the leaderboard, so it doesn't matter how much RXP or favor they gained. They're out, forever.
If you die, you have to try again with another toon. It's the permadeath mechanic that's been in place since HC1. Lanterns or Lutes, it doesn't change anything in this regard.
If you've finished your lutes but want to be on the leaderboard, don't die before the event closes. There's no other secret.

Understandable. For all the weird little things in this game, no one should be surprised if it actually did remove you from the leaderboard for turning in all your lutes.
