Hardcore is dead - Hardcore-like is not hardcore

There really isn't much to say.
HC seasons were special and fun.
A gathering of players from all servers and from people who don't play this game on a regular basis.
HC-only players.

Downside for the live servers: Less grouping opportunities.
However with the currently still packed servers, albeit not as packed as they were post merge, this is tolerable.

What isn't tolerable however is this "Hardcore-like" aka lanterns and lutes.
This is not fun and has nothing to do with Hardcore gameplay.
You can't have a middle ground. It's either hardcore or no hardcore.

RIP Hardcore seasons in DDO.

Good memories. Good people met. Bad people met.
It was fun while it lasted

HCL was special. I dont participate in the new events at all. I tried but it is not the same.

I am hoping for a new type of HCL server in the near future though.

I think the new 'hardcore' has a singular purpose.
It allows you to make a lvl 1 iconic.
That's about it. It's only purpose.

I think having to start lanterns over was brutal enough but having unknown mix of players in PUGs is a big deviation. Maybe the oath should put you in your own lane where you can only group with the "winter" folks. Fails to get folks on other servers together though.

I like more the new events. I don't see why we have to limit who people play. If you don't want to group with non-hardcore characters, don't.

The new style events are better for me because I can succeed, but it seems obvious many people prefer the old style.

Is a compromise possible? Maybe one old style and one new style each year? Maybe run old style (Reaper rewards) and new style (normal rewards) concurrently?

Maybe shorten seasons by making them to 20 instead of 25 or 30?

Maybe start a new discussion seeking ways to improve these events with an emphasis on making them fun for everyone?

Well, if it is just a money thing with SSG (it always is)
Just make 1 exclusive HC always on server.
VIP can play there with 2 starting character slots (plus any bonus ones from purchased expansion packs)
Premium can play there with 1 starting character slot (plus any bonus ones from purchased expansions)
No F2P players
There are 2 updated leader boards (most favor, most exp)
Everyone starts at lvl 1
There are no casual levels or normal ... only hard and above.
Dungeon difficulties are not gated.
Public areas spawn level appropriate, area appropriate hostile NPC (Thieves in town, undead in graveyards)
1 in 100 chests are mimics. (no anti mimic potions available)
This server is it's own thing as far as character slots, want more, have to buy them from the store and
they are only good there.
No character transfers.
There.
Folks will spend money playing there.

do it

I don't know if that would be successful. My impression is that people who like HCL are into it for the competition. Everyone starts at zero and builds from there, trying to get to the top of the leader board. None of that would be the case if it was permanent. It would start that way, but then quickly become just another server and the leader board would be dominated forever by the people who got there first.

It's simple...if you die, you're dead. Nobody is stopping anyone from playing hardcore it just takes having the fortitude to delete your character if they die instead of respawning.

Hardcore on a regular server was a bad idea...

IMHO, the Lantern event was a big success because it inspired me to log in and play. True HCL does not do that for me unless for some reason I very much desire the final reward. Footsteps did that, but they're done now.

Lantern was nice because I could more or less level as normal. It was *just* enough of a push for me to say "OK, let's finally do those rebuilds" and get some wings to help my buff-bot alts be even more visually stand-out.

And, well, things are looking up for a butterfly bearling tank.
