And thats all well and good except you just said

As though it wasnt just an issue of exonym vs endonym
I don't think εξώνυμο and ενδώνυμο mean what you think they mean.

Greeks is essentially the name of a subrace of Hellenic people that happened to have colonies in Italy. They were the first contact the people who would later become the romans made with us. So they called us all 'greeks'. It's like calling all dwarves derro because you met the derro first and it's easier to say. When we tried to explain the difference to them they coined the phrase "That's all greek to me" (joke!) and at the time we didn't care because they were unimportant barbarians*. Then they took over the world and THEY didn't care what we told them. They told the world we are called greeks in latin and we are good roman citizents and that was it for a while. Well, we got renamed into byzantine citizents then mongol slaves then ottoman slaves but they also didn't care what we told them our name is. Ottomans actually kinda did, they used it on purpose as a derogative to describe us as uneducated shepherds which technically at the time was true. Being ottoman slaves was the opposite of fun hence we revolted a lot. We never revolted under the Romans - we kinda assimilated the byzantines actually - and we weren't dumb enough to revolt under the mongols!

Technically Greek is not even the name of a hellenic subrace, it's the name of ooold oold people before even the minoans or myceneans who were taken over and entirely assimilated by the Hellines. But the before-romans didn't care. Kind of how the english call ananas pineapple. "Γραικός" aka "Greek" is the name of a mythical person. He's the hero of the local Noah's myth. His people, the "greeks" were the ones who survived the cataclysm. Then King Hellinas conquered them and told them "you're all named Hellines now". It's also quite possible that it's an ancient word for 'old man' and "greeks" translates to 'old people' They are very similar! "Γραίος". Now obviously my history books are different than your history books and besides, history gets rewritten and overwritten all the time. When I was going to school we were taught about the descent of the dorians but that kinda turned out to not be entirely true. For now.

TL;DR we really AREN'T "greeks" but foreigners don't really care. Which makes total sense. Most hellines don't even know or care. The problems of having ~ 5000 years of ethnic history.

* Fun fact: the word barbarian was coined by the Hellines to describe foreigners. Foreign languages sounded like barbarbar (our equivalent of blah blah blah) compared to the musical tone of ancient hellenic.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever read.

But you smell minty fresh today.

I was recently banned on the forums again (and it's ok!). I was given a message 'rules violation' and a date of when it would be lifted. Is there a way to find out which one of my posts was the rules violation or even better which sentence/comment/phrase/word etc violated the rules?

In the old forums you'd get a message "you are warned about this post" "you are banned because of this post" and there was record of infractions and you could go back later and see them. They would state "You are warned because of baiting" for example or for "You are warned because speaking bad of turbine employess" etc so you could avoid repeating the same rules violation.

I talk trash all the time so I need to know what is rules violation to work around it cough cough I meant avoid it. Also because I'm not American - I'm Hellenic - I don't follow let alone understand american culture and a lot of things don't make sense to me.

This is not a rant or complain, frankly I'm surprised I don't get banned more often.
I am Greek too!

We are everywhere!

Greeks are the founders of things like (and not limited to) modern civilization, art, poetry, democracy, plumbing, etc...

People of Greek ancestry should never be banned from the forum. If it wasn't for us Greeks, you wouldn't have a toilet to sit on, let alone a game to log into. Logging into a video requires the use of the human language. On behalf of our people, your welcome...

So you never seen the olympics or a world cup or a euro cup or any sporting event or any political summit ever? Or even global contests like miss world or mr universe or eurovision? Because if you had, you would notice distinctly my country's "official" name there under the flag is "Hellas". That's how we call our country in our language. "Hellenistic" is the name of a period, not a country name or the name of the people. "Hellenic" is the name of the people. Only foreigners use the word Greece/Greek and we only use it when talking to foreigners because usually it takes too long to explain this to them in casual conversation. But this is the internet so there you go <3
Sorry, going to call BS on this one. All of my Greek relatives (born in Greece, or 'Hellas' as you would say) refer to the country as Greece, and call themselves Greek. In all of the Greece related FB pages I belong to, I've never seen anyone (native or otherwise) refer to the country as Hellas or the people as Hellenic. It's always Greece, and Greek. That's why your terminology stuck out to me. I've been around Greeks my entire life. I am one. You are the first person in 55 years that I've heard refer to themselves as Hellenic instead of Greek. Since you wanted to clear your position up, I thought I'd do the same, as others seem to be a little baffled by it. But hey, at the end of the day call yourself whatever you like! Based on what I've read about it today, most people who refer to themselves as Hellenic are people who still acknowledge the Greek Gods, which I can get behind, because that has to be a hell of a lot more fun than being Orthodox 🤣

I'm Greek as well. Not really angry though. As much as I love being Greek and am proud of the Greek part of my heritage, I laugh my ass off at the idea that there would be no modern civilization if it weren't for the Greeks. Africa had many, many advancements in civilization, technology, science, and art before even Greece. If Greece hadn't existed another culture would have picked up the slack. I love everything (well, most things) Greece gave us, but our planet would have evolved just fine without it.

The best way I can explain this to you is, you may have greek heritage but it's PAINFULLY obvious you don't speak greek and you don't live in Greece. Because if you would, you'd know the last time a greek said "Είμαι Γραικός" instead of "Είμαι Έλληνας" was in the 19th century. His name was Athanasios Diakos and he is literally famous for saying it. The country is called "Ελλάδα" or "Ελλάς" in greek. The last time a greek person called their land "Γραίκια" is never. Literally never. That ISN'T AN ACTUAL WORD in greek! It's a latin word adopted by french and the romans even spelled it wrong because they couldn't (understandably) understand how greek grammar works. There was a city called "Γραία" (literally means old woman, "Γριά" in modern greek) the short of "Ταναγραία" named after Hesiod's daughter being the most likely source of that word.

The reason we go along with it is because most of us can't be bothered educating barbarians (joke!) and they are too dumb to understand anyway (joke again!) as is proved by you, fake greek person totally uneducated in greek culture. Do you know who greeks called greek in classical times? A greek was one who who had greek education. Tell your relatives they did a terrible job of educating you in our culture. Also, that last part about greek gods explains a lot about what you know about Greece. You know what we call Greeks who still acknowledge the Greek gods? "Crazy people". All 1000 of them. But they have a very lively internet presence most likely due to the sex parties ;)

Don't bother arguing with uneducated people. With regards to your ban, don't worry about it. The same.people that banned you, are the same people that put out the last expansion and this last raid.
I'm not arguing. I'm educating <3

The second part of your comment is mean. True but mean <3

I get it, hence the saying 'when in Rome'. For example: Germany isn't the name of the country, it's Deutchland. However, you'd be foolish to think that the entire world hasn't been anglicized (for better or for worse). Do you think that when a German person is on vacation and they meet someone speaking English that they say they are from 'Deutchland', or from 'Germany'? Ding ding! It's the latter, 99.9% of the time. Why would they do this since the absolute correct answer is the former? Because there is a difference between being pedantically correct, and being appropriate. The VAST majority of the world refers to Ελλάδα as Greece, and the vast majority of Greeks apparently know this and refer to the country as Greece and themselves as Greeks when talking to us barbarians.

I learned plenty of Greek culture and heritage, but you're right, I'm not a 'real' Greek. I'm only half. I'm also quarter Black and quarter Scottish so I spent plenty of time learning about those heritages as well, not to mention learning about Canadian Heritage. If I'm on vacation and someone asks my nationality I simply say Canadian, despite the pride I take in my various heritages. Your comment about me not being a 'real Greek', whether intentionally condescending or not, can really rub people the wrong way. I don't personally care, but I know it really irks African Americans when Africans say they aren't really African. There's merit to the comment(s), but the person making them knows it is insulting.

And you're right about one other thing: I'm not fluent in Greek. I can make very simple conversation and get myself into plenty of trouble (it's a VERY colourful language for profanity!), however living in Canada I felt French was more important to learn. I also speak Spanish, and more German than I do Greek. Maybe if I learn the language and study the culture more I can be a 'real Greek'!

One last point. Instead of weighing the value of a person, or hey, even a country on what they have done in the past (sometimes the very, very, VERY distant past), why don't we judge them based on their merit today? So, how's that economy in Greece doing? 😏

The economy in greece is we're doing everything the americans tell us cause we can't have them force us into another civil war or have them sponsor another military regime. After that we do everything the english tell us then everything the french tell us then everything the german tell us otherwise they'll have the turks invade us again like they did in cyprus. Now sometimes what all these guys tell us to do conflicts but we do it anyway all at once, smile and ask them to sort it out.

So the economy in greece is doing exactly what it's supposed to do. Way better to be economic slaves to the americans and the EU than actual slaves to bulgarians or turks. Nobody is executing people on the streets so we're winning!

You're definitely correct on the sporting events. It comes up often when I watch Hellas Verona play in Serie A.

Anything caught by the profanity filter is apparently also a potential warning (but then why do we have the profanity filter?). I was given a warning once for using the most common variant of the word excrement when describing a particular DDO mechanic. As a European, it is surprising to me that this is considered a profanity. Even the humble p-variant.
