I did everything as recommended, but can't get my old character name back.

As recommended in the Wiki, I created a placeholder toon in Shadowdale with my main toon's name to hold the name. I then tried to run "/changename (Newname)" after unpacking my main toon and deleting the placeholder toon , but I get the message "There was an error while renaming. The name you have selected is banned."

What can I do to get my name back?

At the very least, try to recreate the new character with the name you want, so you have the place holder still. That way if there is some mishigas going on you can try later with the /changename.

You probably have to try your luck with customer service. My guess would be that you are falling into the weird realm of the game using different content filter lists/rules in different areas. So the character creation list/rules has no problem with your name but the /changename list/rules are different and are blocking it.

Smart cookie.

Were you trying to use a last name as well? That was a stumbling block for me in the process. Was unable to add or change a last name when using /change name. It worked fine when I only tried first names. If there is a way to change last names in this process, I would love to hear about it.

It's also possible they parked the first name only (on the new world) and old character's last name is the issue with the current filter list.

Yeah, I tried names with special characters like blank or apostrophe and it won't let me; saying that they are banned.

Instead of those ( ), maybe tried with /changename xNewNamex maybe?

If you do that, trial run it with a throwaway new toon and delete it if it works, not the toon you have "rename rights" on and that you want to be named Newname

Did your new character name have a -1 after it when you transferred it? You only get the free rename when this happens.

No last name.

I've just run into another problem. A bunch of my characters aren't able to unpack in the new world. I keep getting this error message:

World transfer unpacking failed with error: Transferred guild not found. The guild leader has not yet unpacked the guild on this world.

And yet, I am able to withdraw items from the bank in the new world. But, the suitcase icon next to each character remains.
My understanding was that we could still transfer and unpack without the guild having done so, but we'd just have to unpack again after the guild unpacks in order to join it.

Anybody know what's going on here?

You're unpacked except for your guild membership and your renown account. That can't unpack until your guild exists to attach it to.

If your guild went to another world, there's a way to deal with this, but for now you should probably just wait a bit or try to check in with your guild on your home world.

It will unpack everything but your guild in that case; so the suitcase stays as the guild data is still packed.

Once your guild leader arrives and unpacks the guild you will then unpack your characters again and it will add them to the guild. Until then you can quest normally, just don't TR or try to create or join a guild. If your guild is defunct or is going to a different world then you will need to delete the guild information that was packed with your characters so you can join or create a different guild. You do that with the command /transfer delete guild. Use with caution though, doing this is not reversible and it will erase all that character's guild data.

It is possible that if a character's name was selected a long time ago, and our required name blacklist rules have been updated to no longer allow it, that you will not be able to rename that character to your original name. Typically CS can sort through the cause if necessary.

But would OP have been able to create a placeholder with that name? Since they did it seems like there is a disconnect somewhere.

I'm rather sure I skirted the "ban" by being able to create a well-known DnD character name on the new servers - which I only did because I've had the name since 2007.

So the filter/"blacklist" only applies on renames? That's .... odd. The filter and "blacklist" cannot be the same thing else we'd see many, many offensive names. Also odd, but what do I know :)

*So what would have happened to my TM-DnD name if I just transferred?
