I will go out on a limb and make an educated guess about the Dragon Disciple

The Dragon Disciple was a desperate attempt to pump out a 'DRAGON' themed Archetype during the Year of the Dragon, regardless to how
convoluted it would be.

You know what the 'Dragon Disciple' cost everyone ?
A better Monk archetype like a Samurai.

This is what happens when the urge the follow an arbitrary theme out weighs good judgement.

Just my personal opinion.

Samurai a different class, bro. Just look in the books.

BUT the point being, Dragon Disciple is a poor archetype and if SSG had not been dead set on a 'Dragon' archetype, there could have been a better offering for the monk.

I dont think the shortcomings of DD are solely due to it being shoehorned into a Draconic theme

It was just designed to fill a role that the game doesnt really reward you for playing - hybrid melee/caster

It could've been executed with a stronger vision and still have been Draconic. Dlord is all the rage, after all.

Like most new Archetypes DD will likely have various bugs and be found to have some not WAI OP ability that people will flock to and then cry when it gets brought back to what they had intended, i.e. nerfed. Here is an idea. Play one to cap and then comment on it.

That's the problem isn't it. IF it works like what seems to be intended, it's awful. IF there's some not-WAI stuff that makes it op - that's even worse.

On topic: agreed on a missed oppourtunity for both dragon disciple (why not sorc? if monk, why not sturdy but simple monk, why is it a caster? sturdy but simple would have avoided the whole mess with builder/finisher systems) and the monk revamp which have in combination led to a rush job on monk revamp clearly indicated by how late Lama came around, how little happened inbetween them and how many reported bugs made it through Lamas to Live - the entire Ninja Spy being kaput and having no ranged attacks (Deepwood Stalker was an example on how to do this with grace - Ninja Spy a horrible one), icons being DONOTUSE, icons entirely unfitting for what they do, enhancements in wrong tiers and wrong requirements, etc etc etc.

Disagree on Samurai being a fitting Monk archetype. They seem very different to me except for the part where they have high willpower and focus on what they strive for.

Is DD even viable?

I feel like it’s extremely weak since it tries to half-heartedly be a caster and melee and can’t decide on which one.

What’s its gimmick anyway?

there are a couple of named armor that look like it - and several bastard swords have a katana look

I don't have a screenshot but there is a common rangen bastard sword that looks really katana-like. Look for the icon that doesn't have a crossguard.
Yeah I know which one your’re talking about.

Still isn’t a katana katana. It’s blade is a tad off.
