If I play an Iconic hero, do I need a +1 lesser heart, or a +15, to not go that class?

The answers above cover the basics. But it can get more complex if you're multiclassing or if there's an alignment issue (as a result of the base class having an alignment requirement that could be different than the class you want to swap into's).

You only need a +1 Heart of Wood to get rid of the initial class level. When doing the LR, make sure you pick the new class you want at the initial character creation screen, not the Iconic option, or you'll waste the HoW.

It's more complicated (and expensive!) if you want to swap between alignment-locked classes where the default class blocks access. E.g., making a Bladeforged barbarian or a Razorclaw monk. In that case what you need to do is:
  • Level to 15 as an alignment-agnostic class: e.g., Bladeforged paladin 1 / fighter 14.
  • Use a +1 HoW to get rid of the initial class to become e.g. BF fighter 15.
  • Buy an alignment change to something compatible with your desired class, e.g., Lawful Good->Chaotic Neutral.
  • Use a +15 HoW to swap to your destination class, e.g., BF barbarian 15.

As I don't want to start a new thread - if I just want to get a class life in a different class to the usual Iconic one, then I can just go one level starting class then 19 in my preferred one (and 10 Epic levels) and still get my preferred class life?

E.g.
If I started as bladeforged paladin but wanted a sorc life I could go 1 paladin 19 sorc 10 epic, and when I reincarnate at 30 I would get the Bladeforged Iconic past life and the sorc class past life? Is this correct?

Thanks!

It follows the same rules as any multiclass setup for what past life you get. So 1 pal / 19 sorc would net you a sorc past life.
