I'm not one to complain...

...I'm really not.

But I feel like saying this here may make me feel a little better. No responses required. I won't be checking.

I have spent the last 48 hours (when not asleep) absolutely failing to complete the simplest dungeons on my main who is currently level 6 (again). I blew through the last of my Store points on first a stack of 5 cakes (when I typically don't need any, or one at most). Then a stack of 3 cakes. Then a single cake. I'm not going to buy points until there's a super awesome sale again. I just had some expensive surgery done last week, and my pocketbook needs to recover.

I didn't complete the quest.

Playing the game is impossible with this amount of lag at the level I Iike to play. Or even a lesser level than I like to play.

I hit my Jibbers at one point only to have it not decrement the charge, not raise me, but somehow go on timer. That's when I bought the first stack of cakes.

I went to run the Cannith Challenges to restock some minor xp pots and failed two runs in a row on a quest I never fail at. Once because the kobolds just didn't feel like moving, the other because they only wanted to run 10 feet at a time then stop and stare blankly for an equal amount of time....repeatedly.

I logged over to my level 32 aura Warlock and switched over to the event to grab the new cosmetics I wanted, and while the lag wasn't any better, doing passive damage through lag on a beastly defensive character made running the event (which, to be honest, isn't meant to be insane hard at 5+ level) easy if ugly looking. The rubberbanding, the enemies standing still while I killed them or any other visual lag effect that happened to be occuring at the time just further stoked my ire.

Sometimes my loss was popping to double digits (often it wasn't), never once did my connection indicator go yellow or red. I visited the forums to see Orien having issues (I'm on Thelanis) and I had to wonder if they got a server reboot simply because they complained loud enough. Because it isn't happening over here either, apparently. Or elsewhere. I see a bunch of other anti-event, anti-lag threads.

I'm done now. Got my cosmetics. But since I can't play the characters I want to play, I'm going to log off now. Probably for a while.

This next line is a lie based solely out of my rage at having to deal with this and my frustration at not being able to play while I'm recuperating from surgery, because I know I'll be back in here trying to see if things are better at least twice a day, but it's going to feel real good saying it. I'm going to put it in quotes to really emphasize that I'm being extreme and that it should be read through the perspective of me being slightly hyperbolic.

"That's it. I quit. I'm tired of wasting time and money on quests that I can't complete simply because of lag. I have better things to do with my time. TV, cooking, sleeping. Heck, I could even go bang my head against a wall and at least have something to show for my efforts. I'm contemplating going out on the front lawn and watching my grass grow. Because its a better choice than trying to play DDO right now. Call me when October is over. Maybe I'll think about coming back. I'll have already gotten involved in other things. I mean.....watching grass grow is fascinating. I'm going to mark it off in quadrants and set up a fantasy league. I would like a refund of the points I spent on my three cake purchases. And something shiny for the complete waste of time that has been inflicted on me. When I waste time playing a game, there needs to be some kind of 'progress' to show for my investment. That's my choice. When a game wastes my recreation time....that's something else entirely. I don't think there's anything shiny enough to compensate me for the lengths of time and patience I have extended thus far. But you should still try."

Going back to real talk now. End of the quoted passage, see? I've read a lot of highly-opinionated posts over the years stating that "this thing" is going to be the end of the game or "that thing" is going to be the end of the game. My personal opinion? This game is over when I can't log in and play it. Because if you can't play a game, you go somewhere else and do something else. Even if it's watching grass.

Edits made for typos/clarity

Additional/final edit: I am grateful that things seem to be back to normal today. I don't like leaving negative threads unresolved. My gameplay is back to normal, my frustrations and ire have all been washed away. Nothing I said is retracted, it is all still true. It is now just moot.

Just take a break until the 64-bit servers arrive. Initial testing suggests that it's a massive improvement. Tolero mentioned on the latest Fridays at Four that with the lag massively reduced with the 64-bit tech they're starting to find the actual source of consistent lag spikes in some quests (eg they've identified the source of the massive lag spike in the first part of the Shroud).

As I mentioned years ago, and as is the obvious elephant in the room, lag is the ultimate fun-killer in DDO and any online game. For this reason, addressing it should always be a top priority in order to keep the "lag monster" at bay. Of course, it’s probably impossible to eliminate lag entirely, and it's a thankless task—when there's no lag, no one talks about it, but when there is, everyone has good reason to complain.

I’m hopeful we’ll see the 64-bit servers soon and that they will have a significant impact on server performance.

By the way, while it's clear that SSG is primarily responsible for server performance, players can also help by avoiding the aggro of too many monsters. Similarly, it’s not just the player’s responsibility to ensure good client performance; the client software itself must also be optimized to avoid unnecessary graphical lag.

Bad me would say: they are doing the lags on purpose, just to sell us the new shiny nearlylagfree VIP only 64 server 🙈

May I suggest playing a game called "Grim Dawn". It has been my goto during times I'm not on DDO, for one reason or another. It's the best Diablo spin off I have ever tried without it being a Blizard product. Even FO4 is great, as you don't need connection to play it. Thus days where lag is a non-stop issue, there are gaming options that don't place you in micro-transaction hell with a bunch of tards.
