With this new judgement and now law being passed for all of the UK, if someone hacks your account and takes in game currency that holds real monetary value, its actually illegal now, and falls on the company to take matters to resolve it ASAP or face legal ramifications. This doesn't JUST pertain to OSRS, either, this pertains to ANY game with currency, is now belonging to the individual.

Why does this matter? Well, for a few months now, yes, a few, a couple or posts or comments or messages on the official, and fan discord will pop up, of people having tickets open, some upwards of 50+ days now about having X amount of DDO points stolen from accounts, or duplicate charges being done, upwards of 1200+ dollars, this is now clear cut theft on SSG. With zero accountability from SSG's part being taken to boot. With this new judgement passed in the UK, SSG is now liable for all of it. I know SSG just loves getting into legal issues, so this is right in their ballpark. Sure, this only affects those in the UK as of right now, but now that Moonsea exists as an official EU/UK server, It's only a matter of time until this comes to bite them in the ass when it happens to someone there.

Henceforth, I suggest SSG gets their **** together, resolves these tickets players have been making, and avoid the legal ramifications to come if it ever is to happen to someone in the UK.

QUICK EDIT: I'm going to archive this, just in case it gets removed, that way I have it on record that at least an attempt was made to reach out the only way us players are able to do so.

where does any of this say that it "falls on the company to take matters to resolve it"? This seems to just say stealing in-game currency falls under theft in UK. the only references about companies in this is that the defendant had obtained information on players from working at the company. My interpretation from this is that the thieves could be held liable. So, unless you're claiming ssg hacked people and stole their points, I don't see how this affects them

It also doesn't really change the things I've read lately about hacked accounts. People keep posting about having large amounts of purchases (hundreds to a thousand plus dollars) put on their credit card to buy virtual goods that are moved off their account. A crime was already commited with credit card faud/theft, the additional aspect of the virtual goods is entirely secondary at that point. If the hacker gets caught, it might result in some additional charges/lawsuits vs them, but it's not exactly major difference next to the crime of credit card fraud/theft.

mad props to your legacy Fox, but from forum reports a SSG account wasn't hacked first in order to get access to a credit card on file. the point being SSG should be responsible for keeping credit card purchases reasonably secure. many apps offer multi-factor authentication...we have no proof forum reports of theft are real, but if even some reports are true, then SSG should offer improved authentication.

it's all fun in game until theft happens to you or someone you care about.

You guys really do just read the headlines, there are some very important facts that you all seem to be glossing over: The theft was done by an ex-employee, the amount was significant and it was premeditated theft, it wasnt just a bug with the system or an incidental occurrence. It only applies to situations of theft as it applies under the theft act (this part is really important) and doesn't set any wider precendent of value. So unless SSG employees are going to start stealing platinum from peoples accounts en-masse (which doesn't really have any real world value), it wont affect them.

But I get it, the truth is less dramatic :p

Several of the posts also reference doing business with the astral shards site, which is known to be a scam site. It really does suck when you or someone you know gets scammed, but it's also a good idea to not open yourself up to those scams.

Sounds like it's time to shut off UK, and no longer offer services in that region.

This is the most likely outcome if the UK has passed a law that makes EG7 criminally liable for things that include player stupidity prominently in the causes.

You cannot idiot-proof anything. Making companies criminally liable for things that are often the result of bad player decisions is just going to shut the door to those players.

It seems that most of these issues are where someone just inadvertently logs into your account and steals. That seems like an SSG problem as well in those cases. How can that even happen honestly, but several reports are being made that it has.
