I agree DDO does not encourage exploration like many MMOs of its kind... in fact, since I started playing DDO I never considered it a traditional MMO, but this does not mean that it is a bad thing, on the contrary, it can have its strengths and weaknesses, I would see it mostly almost like a Diablo or a Path of Exile but simpler to understand and play. Yes DDO has its complexities but in my experience compared to a PoE or a Diablo it is not complicated to build a character...especially if you use the right tools like DDO Builder etc...Gotta agree with this. DDO is highly idiosyncratic in play choices.
For instance, there are only a few reasons I run a quest and "it's new" is not there:
For whatever reason, DDO doesn't trigger explorer mode for me. At present, DDO is all about making characters for raiding. BTW, ESO, Aion, GW2, Wildstar, SWL, and EQ1 set off explore mode. Tera and FFXIV did not.
- It has an item I need for a build
- It gives favor I need to TR (coin & bank)
- It gives Legendary RXP and is part of a saga I can bank for ER
- It gives a TON of XP for reaching cap quickly
- It unlocks one of the above
