Just played through the Legendary version on Reaper 1 (EDIT: Solo, Level 34 Pure DL). It's alright. Low-res textures and typos give the strong impression that deadlines were a factor.
I think and hope that both textures and typos are rectifiable.
A low-effort texture pass would make all the difference in the world
- I echo the comments about visuals; the graveyard in particular could have been such a great opening piece to that quest - instead it took me out to thinking about if I'd ever seen lower quality textures.
- I liked the overall vibe of the outdoor area, and in particular the rooftops - but having now been to the rooftops once I doubt I'll ever have cause to go back there as no quests or purple names are there (if there is at least a red name up there I retract this).
- I almost liked the docks. If the textures were just the tiniest bit better I think it again could have been an amazing mood. The PS1 Silent Hill level visuals were again too obvious to the point of distraction.
- One exception: the new 'Reaper-ghost' monsters look tremendous; genuinely awesome job.
[Suggestion] I doubt it'll happen, but even a very low-effort texture pass on the walls/graves might provide huge bang for buck.
Drop rates feel looooooow
- I did every optional I could, but received a single named item (no sun/moon augments - but quite a few sentient filigrees) across the entire saga in the form of a Docent from one of the end chests. I'll run it again (for the gift at least) but I don't think my experience of a single drop is super likely if the drop rates really are 34% on R1.
Balance
- The monsters have some funny balance:
The hard:
The patchwork beasts are brutal, as are the mini-cats without knockdown immunity. The 'animated objects' and snowballs are absolute hellscapes of bat movement coupled with missile attacks, and the trash warlocks seemed to have a base damage of >1000 force per blast on non-champions?
The easy:
A lot of the end-quest Red Names were chill. It felt broadly 'alright' though; a few random red name enemies felt very tanky, but my character is using entirely ML:20 items ('I'll quickly gear up in Lamordia' <-- me, an idiot) so I'm not a great barometer.
The c'mon let's keep DDO not pure hack'n'slash:
- Why do these flesh golems not haste and heal from lightning?
- Why do I need to kill tanky stationary turrets, to spawn the mobs in another room, who need to die to unlock a lever... when the obvious strategy for 'large stationary hard-hitting gun' is 'leave the room'? Sigh. Battle for another day (or arguably a lost battle from the distance past).
Some typos:
Mayor Vogelhertz: "Any every field has frozen over." <-- "And every field has frozen over."
Mayor Vogelherts: "DNT more info 2 pc b" <-- no idea.
Petra Mendung: "\Baron von Aubrecker rules all of Lamordia." <-- no "\"
Katrin Waljager: ".The Isles of Agony were a windy..." <-- no "."
Frida Kauss: "Yet while I'm doing that, perhaps you acould sneak inside the zpp and take a look around." <-- should be "zoo".
Erhard Gildemeister: "And what you heard about the Deadmongers?" <-- I did not realise my PC had a Cockney English accent. If we're going this route I politely request an, "Ello ello, and what's all this then?!". I think the original line should probably be "And what have you heard about the Deadmongers?"
There's another at the start of one of the quests but I didn't screenshot it and don't remember it.
Short version - I'm suss on the drop rates, and cannot stress enough how much a low-effort (literally get an intern) texture pass would help most of the complaints.
