Lanterns in the Mist Event

As for the event mechanics, I see a serious flaw.
1 person with the lantern should not trigger a fight for other party members that don't have said lantern and will not benefit from it.
Keep it simple, You can not enter a dungeon with player party members unless they ALSO have the correct lantern in the trinket slot and participate.
If one player party member does not have the lantern in the trinket slot, the event turns off for that dungeon.
Period.
All or nothing.
If you don’t want to play the event don’t but what’s the point of going to the event if you don’t want to play in it

Sounds like you want a way to stifle others progress

Until we actually see how the event plays out in about 5 minutes, it's more likely that they are simply regular champions and you only receive benefits for killing them if you have a trinket equipped.

Oh. Also. They should have made the 'lantern' a cosmetic item that fits in one of the cosmetic slots. I guess they forgot that cosmetic items are treated as magic items by their own game, which is the reason we cannot have cosmetic storage. Remember putting Festival Cold and Fire protection on your armor and helms during the ski jump event? The thing we were not supposed to do. *wink wink*

This is quite an excellent point^! How did they forget that we have cosmetic slots and their entire reasoning for not having a Cosmetic Closet tab feature is that behind the scenes as they keep telling us... cosmetic items are still considered actual magic items by their code. So they could have easily coded the lantern to be a cosmetic head slot item that sets a glowing lantern by our head much like the Memorial Ribbon (https://ddowiki.com/page/Item:Memorial_Ribbon.) This would not have inconvenienced any gear tetris or disadvantaged any build that needed their trinket slot. Seems like a winning idea to me.

Maybe cos cosmetics themselves have no active functions. All they do is 'make my character look pretty'. They don't level up, they don't have animations inherent in themselves, they don't DO anything else in the game. I suspect some re-use of a certain cosmetic from the other game that must be equipped for its animations to work. So, a passive cosmetic versus an active item with a cosmetic effect. I mean, it would be nice if the engineering worked that way, but it seemingly doesn't. I personally can't be fussed about it cos none of my builds are make-or-break simply due to the trinket slot not having a statted item in it, but I do recognize the same is not true for others. Sometimes, all you can do is work with what you have available and make the best of it.

A few thoughts:

1. Only one person in a party has to have a Lantern equipped for Mist Stalkers to spawn? What if the others aren't part of the event?

2. Further to 1., if a MS spawns, can you only fight it if you have a Lantern equipped?

3. If you have something else in your Trinket slot and your Lantern is in inventory and a MS is killed, does your Lantern advance?

4. Could we get the kind of flexibility there is in Slave Lords items (chains, rings, shackles), and allow them to be equipped in multiple gear slots? Making the Lantern Trinket-only limits gear Tetris. At the very least, Trinket and Ring (like Slave Lords Rings); could even make the Ring *green. :)

*Blatant Green Lantern reference
1. Mist Stalkers start more interested in the lantern bearer but won't ignore getting fire balled by someone who isn't carrying one. It's up to the players to determine pug social mechanics. It is easy for lantern bearer opt out for a quest or two just by bagging their lantern, if that is what their current party prefers.

2. No it's a monster, it just starts with the lantern bearer as it's first target. After that it's like any other fight. The lantern does offer some advantages against the mist stalkers by it's active ability.

3. You have to have your lantern equipped for it to advance.

4. We currently aren't designing the lantern to be desirable as permanent gear, more something you use while you play the event since your required to turn it in. We may try "loot" rewards for events like this later after we iron out the format.

P.S. Magic rings powered by lanterns may come later :D

This is an interesting mechanic that could result in what we expected sentients weapons to be. a weapon or item that can evolve with you, could be fun. I can even see potential in a hardcore league to test the waters hahah

Just a thought: Being able to have it as an Augment so it only takes up 1 Augment slot? Not sure if it is doable (and people will still complain about losing that slot also and having to lose/unslot it as they level).

Edit: Now that I have checked out the event it seems more unlikely to be feasible especially with the Hardcore aspect of losing the Lanterns on death.

The server will be ongoing as a new server even after the event. This also allows both Hardcore and Normal players to player together at the exact same time. (IMO)This is also a model that may eventually evolve so events like it can be run on all servers.

The response was:

So imagine taking your Main toon on a normal server and running an event just like this. . . .
Perhaps, but I don't think many will keep playing on that server after the event as most will return to play with people they know on their main server. And the character can't be transferred off thus my comment it's a dead-end server - which from my perspective it absolutely is.

I'll probably pass as the event itself is a "my little pony" version of hardcore - not sure that reward means anything to me as it looks the equivalent to getting to 20 on hardcore.

Kudos for the event. Seems like a good idea. I like that this could potentially evolve into making hardcore league take place on regular servers, so we won't split up the playerbase all the time.
I won't be participating myself since I don't really care for cosmetics or not playing my main, but I think there are some good ideas here.

Thanks for the responses. That clarifies a lot.

Re. 4., though: It's pretty clear people don't care if it's temp gear or not; giving up a slot with no option for which slot it is is going to be unpopular. It means anyone running the event cannot use a Trinket for as long as the event lasts, no matter how important it is to their gear set.

Seems like a bad plan to me.

Level up? Agreed, no cosmetics "level up." Animations attached to or inherent to a cosmetic? Hard disagree. Wings do, ioun stones circle the head, the Mabarian head spider moves its legs, some Night Revels cosmetics such as the new orb, a shield, etc have flames active only during the festival, other cosmetics such as the Diadem of Fire, Glowing eyes or weapon cosmetic imbues have cosmetic animation elements. As to doing anything else in the game... Hard disagree again, Sophie is correct that we used to be able to put festival recipes on cosmetic items and get minor benefits like 10 fire or cold resistance and there are cosmetics that have a clicky like the Elite Spider Cult Mask or still purchasable cosmetics with continuous beneficial effects such as Bunny Hat, Top Hat, or Ninja Mask.

So only the point about a cosmetic leveling up stands.

I am almost certain if they can code a regular item to do what they say these lanterns will do they could have just as easily coded a cosmetic item to do the same... it just didn't occur to them for some reason or they discarded the idea for some reason.

I wonder if making some of the rare MD loot available as rewards would draw more folks in. Wouldn’t even need to have invest more in art.

I was originally curious (but disinterested) in another HC or HC-like event. Requiring an equiped item utterly killed it, especially the trinket slot (most valuable slot). 5! of them is annoying.

BTW, I doubt stealing an item slot will deter those eager for an HC-like event, but it is a negative. An even bigger negative is no free transfer off the server when the event ends.

Likely late for feedback, but if you make the lanterns CC-blanks like Gem of Many Facets, my objection to loosing a slot vanish.
i agree but it would have been great if the lanterns need only be equipped to a cosmetic slot

What server(s) is this happening on?

When is it happening?

What account(s) can play?

These are the very most basic questions about the event. Player comments and speculation are fine, but what is the official word? I would like to see that information in the official announcement describing the event.

It's fine. I have already given up and lost interest.
The first run of the event is only on Cormyr. It was made clear in the first Lamannia preview for the server that once it's off Lamannia, only VIPs will be able to access Cormyr for the foreseeable future, and therefore the same applies to this first run of Lanterns in the Mist.

We know further 64 bit servers will be released that don't require VIP, and the devs have indicated in recent Fridays at Four chats that they'd be open to rerunning the event in future, but for now the only run of the event we know about will be VIP only.

As for the dates, I'd imagine these are not fixed yet - release dates are very rarely fixed before the first Lamannia preview in case something goes horribly wrong during testing and they have to delay the live update. (The exception is for expansions, which do have an on-paper release date since they have a pre-order window - even then several expansions recently have ended up launching a week late.)

  1. Lantern of the Pledge - Easy to Fill. Reward - Cosmetic Half Cloak of the Order of the Guardian

  2. Lantern of the Order - Long to Fill. Only Advances on Reaper Difficulty. Reward - Cosmetic Full Cloak of the Order of the Guardian

  3. Lantern of the Shield - Medium length to fill. Reward - Cosmetic Shield of the Order

  4. Lantern of the Seeker - Very Long to Fill. Reward - Mist Stalker Sabertooth Mount

  5. Lantern of the Keepers - Medium length to fill. Reward - Magical Lantern Cosmetic Pet

If all the rewards are just cosmetic, why isn't the lantern taking just a cosmetic slot?

Ok, this is rediculous. I am a 20 warlock (level 34), no sneak. So in the first encounter, to bypass the "Monster" either it doesn't work, or you can't really hide. He turns, locks me up, and hits for 6500 HP.

And Yes, I am in the blue box around the bush, With sneak turned on.
