Lanterns in the Mist Event

Those two things have no logical connection. Though I agree with the question itself.
I would invest a real item to get a real item. and I wouldn't mind using a cosmetic even without a cool visual to get a cosmetic item. but I'd never use a real slot to get a cosmetic item. I see a logical connection :)

The lantern isn't the reward. It's the mechanic. You keep it equipped while trying to progress the event.

uhm no, I get that; wearing the latern is the investment, the cosmetic cloak is the reward

You should have the ability even with no points allocated in Hide and Move Silently.
I mean, yes, I have the ability, but the checks suck with a Hide of only 2.

Ok, this is rediculous. I am a 20 warlock (level 34), no sneak. So in the first encounter, to bypass the "Monster" either it doesn't work, or you can't really hide. He turns, locks me up, and hits for 6500 HP.

And Yes, I am in the blue box around the bush, With sneak turned on.
Same. The toon I copied is level 28 one shotted and with circle of doom or whatever cant even run away. Very fun starter quest that will limit the number of participants!

The text for going into the save area states: This is the perfect hidding spot. Stealth Hide checks always succeed even against some creatures who typically never fail such things. This does not affect move silently checks, so staying still when it's important helps!

Obviously it doesn't, because he sees me anyway.

Every time I "used" a hiding spot he just walked right into me, so I just decided to ignore the mechanic and go around him.

Things to consider:
  • I started an Iconic (Aasimar Scourge) and chose to get my XP reset to 1. I then reincarnated to be a Dark Hunter and retained my 15 levels worth of XP.
  • Additionally, Using the teleport to the lantern event on an iconic character results in not having any starting gear.

Yeah, switch to a different character that is currently 7 Mond/3 Rogue, 2 Fighter, WIth a hide of 23. Made it no problem. I would guess then it is some bug that allows him to see (and ignoring the fact you are in the area).

If we changed lantern to a cosmetic slot which slot would be preferable....shield?
Thematically, making it a cosmetic cloak seems correct.

Not that I relish the thought of not having a nice looking cloak on while running this event :D

I was thinking the Quiver slot might be ideal for it.

Not everyone uses a shield, would it still work in the cosmetic shield slot if you had an offhand weapon or were going one-handed or using a bow? My thought was cosmetic head slot because everyone has a head or goggle item equipped and nothing interferes with it by making different build choices as happens in the cosmetic weapon/shield slot. But cosmetic cloak slot would also be fine because that too is build independent.

I was testing with a level 1 Rogue with no points invested into Hide. He only saw me once when I was standing close to the edge of the blue box but he never seemed to notice me when I was standing in or very close to the center of the box.

As a weapon/shield/orb cosmetic you could (in the future) actually make it look like a lantern. So players can visually see who is doing the event or not

95% sure at this point that which cosmetic slot it goes in will have no functional change to game mechanics. It's a question of what cosmetics visuals you will be forgoing till you finish your event goals. I mention the shield slot because that cosmetic only draws if your using a shield and many builds don't.

Turn the lantern into a cosmetic Pet. You summon it, it floats next to you like a good lantern. Everyone knows you have one active. Doesn't use up slots ... other than a cosmetic pet slot.
Interesting.

As I understand it, when you make progress with the lantern it restores some of its durability (I ran a couple quests with Kozy and I had restored durability by 13). So the question would be, would it be possible to give a cosmetic pet the durability function? If so then I think this is a great idea.
