launcher always download stuff

This problem was mentioned in another thread, but there is no detailed information there.

If you look at the launcher logs, you will find attempts to load Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF) modules. There are no files on the server, so the action is repeated several times and every time the launcher is launched.

I submitted information via the support form. This does not guarantee a solution to the problem in the near future, so below is information if there are problems downloading about 56MB files.

Download CEF version 3.2924.1575.g97389a9
Windows 32-bit - for the root folder of the game;
Windows 64-bit - for x64 game folder in the root folder.

For each bit depth, place the corresponding files (from the log) in the appropriate places.
cef_extensions.pak, cef.pak, cef_100_percent.pak, cef_200_percent.pak, d3dcompiler_47.dll, widevinecdmadapter.dll, avcodec-53.dll and other missing files.

Use the skiprawdownload startup option (link to details in related topic) to further reduce startup time.

This is the manual fix for the OP issue. A couple of further details from my experience fixing it up.

AFAIK the launcher is trying to download version of libraries that DDO no longer uses and don't have available from their site.
You'll see all the failed files the launcher is failing to download in the launcher log (Use the Explore Log folder from the launcher menu.)

Code:
Error downloading http://installer.ddo.com/dnd//5000.0050.3264.4021//CEF3/2924/cef_binary_3.2924.1575.g97389a9_windows32/Resources/cef_extensions.pak

Error downloading http://installer.ddo.com/dnd//5000.0050.3264.4021//CEF3/2924/cef_binary_3.2924.1575.g97389a9_windows64/Resources/cef_extensions.pak

Download using Dolmatov's links the Windows 32 and Windows 64 versions of:
All Builds, Standard distribution 03/01/2017 - 3.2924.1575.g97389a9 / Chromium 56.0.2924.76

I was also missing the AwesomiumSDK 1.7.5.1 files and downloaded that to copy the files to DDO game folder.
Now on Launch, Admin access isn't requested and no attempt is made to download the files.

Another easier way (i realised after), like Valerianus suggested is to copy the missing CEF files from a working Lamannia (Preview) install.

If you are unsure, leave the install alone and hopefully DDO will eventually fix it, possibly with the new 64 bit server deployment.
It isn't actually downloading the files each time just trying to, waiting, receiving the error and moving on.

Yet it downloads the same 56.3mb worth of files every time.

But it doesnt do this for people with an old version of the launcher.

BTW Ive never played any other game where it makes some users download the same files every time but most dont have to.

This is very much SSG. So stop defending their laziness.
I'm not defneding anything, just pondering...why you? we all use the same access system into the game. Whenever there hasn't been an update the launcher has launched the game. Or maybe SSG really like me and provide a goldrated route into the system :ROFLMAO:

Its not just me. I believe anyone using the new installer gets it.

You dont hear it much because there are so few new players.

It also is not saving my game settings, launcher settings, and is making playing the game an overall pain. And yes, the account I use is an administrator account.

And if the problem truly is that DDO is trying to download files that are no longer used, that is inexcusable. Fix it already.

Had the same issues with my new PC. Took me about a day to get DDO up and running.

New players who get that... LEAVE. They assume the game has got to be terrible for the developers not to bother fixing the damn client launcher.

I don't so clearly not everyone. The launcher has always worked consistently for me

Im going to go out on a limb and guess that you didnt do a fresh install of the game on a new computer in the last 6 months or so.

Otherwise Im going to go out on another limb and say you arent telling the truth. Because the new installer is bugged.

feel free to go out wherever you want. I did a fresh install last week because the hard drive needed reformatting. And I use wifi on that particular computer so I would have been unimpressed if the launcher repeatedly downloaded any large files/

EDIT: didn't see the baseless accusation.
So if you're going to start slinging baseless accusations then I suggest you go elsewhere and "go all karen". The purpose of these forums is to exchange thoughts and attempt to overcome issues that might arise from game experience

I just find it amusing that many have issues but someone with "DDO" in their name had no issues.

Im sure all those with issues will believe they are at fault, not SSG for having yet more dodgy code.

I have issues. The worst issues with DDO are doing cove when the game suddenly freezes...and when it unfreezes you've lost HP AND time.

Or the st*pid kobolds decide to do nothing because the torch placement isn't kobold-approved

What worked for me is:
- I use 64-bit client (#3 below)
- for
  1. DNDLauncher.exe (in C:\Program Files (x86)\StandingStoneGames\Dungeons & Dragons Online)
  2. dndclient.exe (in C:\Program Files (x86)\StandingStoneGames\Dungeons & Dragons Online)
  3. dndclient64.exe (in C:\Program Files (x86)\StandingStoneGames\Dungeons & Dragons Online\x64)
do right mouse click, select properties (for exe), Compatibility tab: set "Run this program as an administrator"
Main issue seems to be that the system thinks it didn't actually finish the previous update (as it doesn't really when not run as admin) and hence does it again & again.

For the unrelated display issue (but then I use windowed resolution & scaled as I have too high DPI): Change high DPI settings: Override high DPI scaling, set to System (Enhanced). That shouldn't be necessary for the update issue.

In any case when you decide to do a full reinstall, don't forget to redo your property settings (I forgot and was struggling with update issue and later the DPI issues, as I had fixed that years ago and had forgotten how, same with new PC).
