Melee Bard Returnee Help

Hi all,

I'm back (again) to DDO after almost 5 years, so going through the motions of picking up everything that's changed and remembering what the hell I used to do with my character. I'm hoping some of you could lend me a hand in figuring some things out.

I play a Human DEX Melee Bard, mostly Swashbuckler with a tier 4 dip of Spellsinger for HoT and some Warchanter protection. I only have a couple of epic past lives, mostly for doublestrike. It wasn't a really optimized build at the time (Count of Monte Cristo was the benchmark at the time, iirc), but it worked well enough and I had decent gear for it. 98% of the time I play solo, so it's ok if I need to take a quest slow. That character is now level 24 and I can barely survive reaper 3 with (Fatesinger and Divine Crusader for ED). DPS is regular, but enough for my solo play considering all the single-target CC involved. My survivability is terrible though, and usually not enough to get me through bosses or if I happen to trigger a mob.

So, all that said, I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on the current status of solo melee pure bard. From what I gathered so far, it's bad, I know. But given that I'm doing it anyway, and that I have only a limited capacity to pivot the character mid-life, anything more specific would be welcomed!

I checked out Kali's melee caster hybrid bard. It's really great and I'm learning all I can from it. But I don't have access to some basic elements for the build (Tiefling, 2 levels of Rogue, caster gear, CHA focus this life), so if there are more inputs from other melee-locked bards out there, I'd appreciate them.

Thanks in advance!

(Sorry for not providing detailed breakdown of my build, I'm still trying to remember it all. And getting used to the new character planner I found which is different from what I used 5 years ago).

I have been running melee bards for a couple years now and if you tinker with them right, the results are nutty. I have always been a pure/-2 lvls bard. Currently, I am running 18 bard 1 ftr 1 fvs. My primary focus is on stuns and warchanter freeze effects. I have my personal build saved somewhere, and ill pin it here when i can figure out how to do so with the new forums. But anyone who says bard is bad has never seen the golden axe in action.

FYI melee bards are getting some buffs next update:
Swashbuckler
  • Battering Barrage cost reduced from 2/rank to 1/rank
  • Thread the Needle now gives +5% to-hit (percentage bonus based on precision) while precision is toggled on
Warchanter
  • Spinning Ice, Frozen Fury, and Skaldic Scream now use the highest of dex, cha, or str for their DCs
  • Their DCs are now (0x bard level / 1/2 bard level / 1x bard level) and (10/12/14) (Skaldic Scream is 1x bard level and 14)
  • Spinning Ice is now a 3/4/5W cleave
  • Northwind cost reduced from 2/rank to 1/rank
One drawback to DEX Swashbuckler is a lack of crowd-control options so it's nice that Warchanter's freeze abilities will be able to use DEX.
  • 41 Warchanter for tier-5s and capstone (Skaldic Scream)
  • 15 Swashbuckler for Resonant Arms, Swashbuckling Style (Skirmisher or Dashing Scoundrel), and Swift Strikes (DEX to damage)
  • 13 Horizon Walker for No Step Missed (DEX Battle Trance)
  • 11 Vistani Knife Fighter for Haste Boost and +5% doublestrike

Looking forward to those update buffs!

I see a lot of the builds rely on Warchanter > Swashbuckler. I used to play Swashbuckler 41, without the Warchanter freezes, relying mostly on Fascinate for CC. Since I have very little comparison leeway, can I ask if this is somehow very very suboptimal or non recommended at this point? Or are there Swashbuckler dominant alternatives to Warchanter capable of doing some reaper solo?

IMO Swashbuckler is a very front-loaded tree; most of the best DPS bits are from the Swashbuckling stance and the mid-tiers (Swashbuckling Style etc.). Tier-4 is very meh (though at least Battering Barrage is about to get cheaper). Tier-5 is decent for pure melees and Coup de Grace is one of the better instakill attacks; but tier-5 Warchanter is better for party support and Spinning Ice is really nice AoE CC if you can get the DCs for it, which is about to get easier.

Main thing the Swashbuckler capstone has going for it is Evasion but nowadays you can get that from Epic Destinies or Tabaxi racial tree, so even for a pure bard, it's not the only option.

Thanks for your inputs! I'm looking into freeze DCs with the new updates, see how high I can get them in my current life and available gear. What is the average DC range I should be aiming towards for Epic Elite/Reaper 1-3 content? Is there a ballpark value?

If you could post your build that would be great. I have been wanting for create a freezing bard for some time.
