You do not want to do the motes after the quest is complete. There is something about how the timers work where you have to "flag" your lute with quest completion to get better times. Basically, complete a quest with your lute equipped, leave and go start the next quest. Get a mote before completing this quest and only complete after. Doing this will get you "better" times.

If you are completing and then doing the mote in the same quest before leaving you will basically always be doing that.
If you avoid doing a mote in a quest after it is complete, you have a decent chance of getting one during quests.

well thats the way we did the mists farming the quest into the mists on cormyr and it always happened pretty fast. Edit ----i was wrong here since mists doesnt end until you leave.

thing is i've been in explorers waiting for motes to spawn for over 30 min and got nothing so i'm wondering what the trigger is to get them to spawn.
edit: just had a green mote spawn out in korthos explore... it bugged out and wouldn't activate from 2 different lutes. (still level 3)

I have never tested explorers, but assuming they operate on the same rules as quests you have the problem that a wilderness instance can never be "completed." I would expect you to be waiting an hour (not sure on the variance) if you have not completed a quest while your lute is equipped.

From my understanding the motes do disappear if you do not use them in a certain timeframe, correct? Something I guess I will need to verify.

- About 100 seconds after it spawned in I got "(Dungeon Master): The Mote you found will fade soon. Use your lute to claim it before it's to late!"
The Mote disappeared about 20 seconds later.

So I run a quest. No mote during the quest. After a completion I can watch paint dry or I can just go to the next quet and I have a btter chance of a mote spawning there prior to completion. Did I get it right?

Mostly, if you have not had a mote spawn yet prior to completion it should not take too long to get one to spawn, but it should be roughly the same range of time waiting there as it would be in the next quest after 10 kills. You would rather be "waiting" that time out in the next quest because you are still doing the quest at that point and not standing around after completion.

Unless you are pushing for "optimal" grind, do quests, if you did not get one do not wait for it.

Thank you for the clarity.

Given these are musical motes, I'm quite surprised they do not announce themselves with a series of chimes, tones, chords or notes, preferably somewhat discordant. Where are our fey jingles ?
they do play music but its faint if you have sounds low like ive had for many years. been turning them up for this event.

I'll have to adjust some settings then so I can hear it. I do play with sounds on and use audio cues but I have not heard anything from them.

Noticed that motes are slow to spawn and often behind us as we level through R1. Today had one spawn behind me and it was called out by another player, I looked on my map and it showed up as a red dot, like the mobs in Bark and Blade. We are collecting them throughout quests as we level both before and after completion. It helps that the player on the ranged build is staying behind to let me grab agro on the barbarian. They usually spot the mote spawn behind me.

so was doing some testing with the mote spawn time in korthos... waited almost an hour and didn't see one spawn at all so either there is a quest completetion trigger or its based on the quest instance ID if you get one... wich is BS that if the spawn timer is after so many kills why the HELL is it that you don't get one within a given amount of time under 30min.

I finally managed to hear one playing, it's so faint as to be almost inaudible, a missed opportunity here.
