When I am exploring - Cerulean Hills or Borderland for instance - I seem to go painfully slow - how can I speed up a tad.

I am Barbarian - level 8.

you just missed the night revels event so sadly you cannot get a freebie mount (TWO were available)

I find items, particularly boots, often drop with the "swift" feature and this makes life so much better. I believe named pieces of loot from Feywild, Isle of Dread, and even Sharn Syndicate drop items giving a speed more than several boost (without looking them up).

On hardcore, where players don't have dragon hoards of loot stored, swift items go quickly on the AH.

You should be able to find some or you could craft some in Cannith Crafting if you work on your crafting skills!

First option: Get the "clicky boots"
Anger's Step is in Korthos (end reward)
Giyar's Boots of Dashing is in Borderlands. (very high drop chance)

Second option: Start Tumbling. You need to invest a full point in tumble (so 2 if it is not a class skill). This will let you tumble. When you put more points in it and keep tumbling everywhere you go it starts to get a lot faster than walking. You need some skillpoints maybe an item and get a clicking rythm though.

Third option: Get a horse. You can get a free horse from the borderlands in exchange for 15 quail feathers. If you make a LFG and state you are trying to get your first horse, i can guarantee you people will join to help. The DDO community is actually pretty great with that.

Not quite true, there are other options.
Completely free real world money but rather time expensive option: do all quests you have access to, save those turbine points, when you hit like 2500 buy the nightmare mount on the store. This will take some time (a coupla weeks to months depending on how fast you quest and how much favor you have access too. If have the whole game for example a 6k life will net you ETA: My math was off, 6k is 1500 not 1750, 7k is 1750 turbine points, more than halfway there)

Less time intensive completely free option: Farm out 1000 turbine points, get the borderlands pack. Farm 15 feathers, get a free horse from a vendor in the keep. If you want an even faster mount, farm out 15 feathers from the slayer rare and quest chests, and span the quests until you get a rare horseshoe drop . Turn one horseshoe and 15 feathers in pick one of four colors of fast horse to your liking. (this is of course if you don't already own borderlands, if you do, just go farm a short bit, feathers are EASY to come buy. Horseshoes can be a pain depending on how well the rng likes you). ETA: 1000 turbine points is 4000 total favor points.

Faster way: Spend just enough real world money to get borderlands, and farm out the vendor items (Feathers/horseshoe). Cost some real world money, but faster than farming out the 1000 ddo points. Which of the top of my head would take 4000 total favor not counting server first time bonuses, might be worth rolling up a toon on a second or third server to rack those up also. If you do this, use the borderlands option. The nightmare in the first option is VERY spiffy looking in my opinion, but would only be good on the server you bought it. Buying the borderlands content pack if you don't already have it but will open the content on all servers if you ever decide to swap (join a forum advertised static group, make friends on hc that you want to play with on regular live going forward from a diff server as examples of why this could be a thing).

Alternatively multi-class into wizard so you can cast exp retreat and get your barb galloping :)
Be careful doing this, I'll never forget the cleric/fighter I met on Korthos long ago who couldn't cast cure light wounds. They started as a fighter, then took a level in cleric so that they could heal themself without realizing that with an 8 WIS they couldn't cast CLW.

are you in a guild ask in guild chat if anyone has any swift boots or check the brokers and auction house for them ask guld mate for plat to buy them pick up any item with swift in the name and arm it while moving then change to regular item when fighting

long live ROGUE
A new player toon should be human barb with passage feat to self-cast expeditious retreat

Without that you need to farm the boots out of sacrifices; get a couple pairs. You will need faster movement during the actual quests which a horse will not offer; horses are only for wildernesses and public spaces. On Hardcore people farm up a horse and grab the boots, so it is a reasonble path (if you get a horse, every toon on the server can then use it).

Another option IF you have a lot of plat is to buy haste potions. They are good for melees because you get the boost to attack speed. So buy a few hundred if you can and chug away; ask guildies or any vet for platinum if you need it…
Here is where to buy the potions:

additional to the above great suggestions from everyone, u could also try

pumping points into Use Magic Device (UMD) and find "evil warding/command" armour or "celebrated cloak" that gives bonus to all charisma based skills and buy stack of Level 1 Expeditious Retreat scrolls from marketplace, and some +Charisma item to temporarily swap into

sometimes see the "evil warding" armor in platinum Auction House or from the Pawn Exchange https://ddowiki.com/page/Pawn_Exchange

also don't necessarily need 100% success to use Expeditious Retreat scrolls, just high enough like ~75% or whatever u'r comfortable with, u'll waste some but they're fairly cheap Lvl 1 scrolls
