New 64 bit servers transfers vs old names

Ok, I have maybe some dumb questions, and maybe it's been answered and i missed it.. (when i first saw this thread it was at 13 pages.
My main concern will be keeping the regular names I am accustomed to, I don't play on all the servers but i have played on 3 of the 32 bit servers (as player bases changed) and have some regular names throughout them I that i have kept and used for years (save one because as I switched servers later on, one regular name I use was taken on the last one of them before i got there - though i've never seen anyone using it online).
Sadly I'm not VIP, but I've kept and used these names for many many years.

My questions are as follows, 1) what if i move multiple chars with the same name to one of the new servers (because maybe they have gear on those servers I want to bring over, but want to keep a specific one of those with the name (because it has more past lives or a +8 all stat tome for example)? and 2) what if (for cormyr) i already created a char with that familiar name to use (during the lantern event) that i would prefer one of my much older transfers (that has the same name) to get and keep the name as the older char will have more past lives etc? oh and 3) I also use a second account in which i used some of my regular used names on for cormyr when it opened... as i didn't intend it to be a main server at the time i used the regularly used names for my main account on both for speed and efficiency during the event. so, what if i want to transfer an 32 bit server's regularly used name to say Cormyr but my alt account has it, and i want to select which of my char transfers specifically keeps it?

I'm not real sure I have the heart to play at all not using my familiar names, and hope i can get this sorted. I'm not real interested in having Familiarname-1 names or the like.

First character to hit the server with that name gets it. If you already have a character on the server with that name then I would transfer the other character over and get the Name-1, then transfer the first character off at least temporarily (or delete them), then use the free rename that Name-1 has to reclaim the name.

Obviously this leaves a window of opportunity for anyone to grab the name, but it should be a very limited window.

Same name characters get a - number so if you had Sam on Cormyr and moved another character named Sam there one would end up as Sam-1.

There's a set of rules for who gets the original name and who gets a - number. Things like when last played, how longed played etc...

How do you use the free rename?

With the /changename function. It's actually mentioned in the new server news. Every character that is transferred and is hit with an auto name change gets a free name change, this goes back to hard-core server characters as well, it's been policy for awhile.

I thought the rules was whoever claimed the name on a server by creating a toon with the name, or transferring to the server first gets the name. When you last played (or played that toon) or how long you played don't matter.

Im sure this is how it will be. With VIP getting the chance to reserve names before the aervers open.

So then its a race between VIP to nab popular names.

Im not fussed. Id be amazed if anyone on any server has any of my commonly used names.

If (big IF) that happens; Sev said the tech to do VIP reserves in advanced doesn't exist in DDO currently, so its just something they might do if time and tech allows for it.

I assume they built it for LOTRO. Cant imagine it was just sitting around unboxed.

I remember reading somewhere that you cannot use a name change to pick a name that has already existed on the server. I have no firsthand knowledge as to whether this is true.

- from https://ddowiki.com/page/Character_name
  • Only pristine character names can be considered, so the naming is stricter than upon character creation. Choosing a name that has been already in use for any reason, even if the character bearing it has been deleted, will lead to an error:

In the Fridays at Four, Severlin and Cordovan did bring up this issue and they mentioned being aware of it, and at some point perhaps allowing some extra free rename coupons or something to help people fix these issues.

This is going to be a problem mainly on Cormyr, but also for the server merging for players who play on multiple servers regardless of where they end up.

But Cormyr being 1) an event VIP-only server 2) an event server open to all 3) the first 64-bit server open to all, and finally 4) a normal server that people can transfer into and out of ... does engender a unique set of issues and potential problems for some players.

His explanations were a bit confusing on that point, but as I understand it he was saying that they have no tech to permit limiting the number of characters you can create to some artificially set number ; so that if they made it VIP only for one day or three, even if they disallowed login to the gameworlds, then those VIPs could hog all the names they wanted instead of being limited to only three. Especially people with multiple VIP accounts.

Which would obviously be unfair.

Their most recent compromise solution was allowing VIP access one hour before general access was opened ... but that's obviously non-ideal.

Make a down time 1 week after the new servers open. Look at all chars with the same name. Reorder so the oldest char gets the name, the end oldest gets -1 etc.

I assume that didnt happen with LOTRO and it was first in best dressed.

Which is good for people in the same time zone. Not so good for those of us in the antipodes.

The best way to handle this name thing. Is one lock out making new toons on new servers for 5 days o one week.
Than use time stamps to show who gets the name with out a 1. So the older made toon should get the name this will 💯 stop people from name trolling.

Exactly, and I posted the same 2 posts prior

I had heard rumors of VIPs getting reserves and was wondering where they were coming from cause there's no such thing currently. This explains what people were talking about.

Here's the sound clip for Sev talking about the VIP reservation they did in LOTRO and how DDO doesn't currently have the tech for it. (28m38s in)
