New Bug - horrid/unplayable lag sets in (seemingly out of nowhere)

First time this happened (yesterday), I was in the end battle (Marut) after talking to Clipse and trying to rescue Veil (Laughing Knives arc). It started like a normal lag storm, lost the ability to interact except maybe once every 6-8 seconds, wouldn't take key commands, and would stutter move (a couple of laggy steps forward, then jerks back to a previous placement). Died to the Marut. Also oddly, my Cleric hireling went brain-dead. On "aggressive" setting, didn't fight, didn't heal, etc. Just died a little before I died. I ALT-TAB'd out, checked my connection, background processes, etc. and nothing was amiss. Back in game, could run freely again, and wrote it off as a freak occurrence. I used a spirit cake, healed, and re-engaged. Exact same thing happened again. This time after dying did a full diagnostic and quickly restarted the game. Logged back in still in the mission, bought another spirit cake, got to a safe location, healed up. Waited. I could move around the rest of the area fine, so I re-engaged (Marut was very low on health). Exact same thing, froze to almost no interaction, died. Quit, left game for the day.

Today I played ALTs and figured it was a fluke/bugged mission. Except that this evening, I tried a mission in the Wheloon prison (first mission in the arc), and in battling the first larger group of barrier-smashers the exact same circumstance kicked in. Hireling went into dip-$%!t mode - wouldn't attack/heal, got killed. I attempted to disengage lag-running/yo-yo-ing back, casting buff spells (stoneskin, etc.) (which eventually after 8-10 seconds appeared to take effect). Still couldn't target/effect mobs. Had to teleport out (which worked after about the 8th cast) to avoid dying. *** folks?

Newer players would leave this game in a heartbeat if this frustrating nonsense was the norm. Is this a bug? Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Yep, there are at least 3 other threads posts reporting similar things. For me, it started last night. Yesterday morning was laggy, but playable. Last night, I kept dying due to not being able to move. Also, it's not just hirelings that are becoming brain dead. 1/3 of of the mobs I've encountered (including reapers) just stand there while I attacked them.

It's been going on since Friday for me. I logged in Thursday with family/guildies and it was "normal". Friday it was unplayable and has remained so since. I've been pushing through slowly, but quests that should take 15 minutes are taking me an hour with lots of deaths where I would normally have 0-1. Something changed. It's all the buzz up in my FB threads and and here in the forums. I'm not hopeful for a resolution any time soon. But since this is the only thing I play.....I'm choosing to see it as a new challenge feature. I mean, I completed 3 whole quests today. It only took several hours, but I did it. I'm a legend!

This lag has been here since at least Saturday... 10+ seconds lag on spells, rubberbanding during fights making hitting mobs impossible, characters dying without being hit on our monitors (apparently they are beating us down server side however) cleric automatic rez failing because before you can heal you are killed again... Strangely I neer noticed this kind of lag in raids but EVERY non-raid quest has been unplayable and sov XP pots are totally wasted... THX SSG YOU HIT A HOME RUN THIS TIME! EDIT: My partner and I had quit playing after the Epic Destiny rework but we had been joining guild raids on and off... She resubbed this weekend I didn't and I am not going to when the game is unplayable...

What server are you on? Sunday morning (Central time) on Sarlona there was a bit of lag and mobs and hirelings would sometimes just stand still and do nothing, but the lag wasn't crippling (just a bit of stuttering here and there) until Sunday night for me. I didn't really play on Saturday.

I knew about the lag but didn’t experience it until I started epic Sharn. Challenges seemed lag free but that may have been luck.

I just got off of Sarlona. I was having lag all day but, the last bit was just horribad. The last bit was in the Night Revel's "Gravework." I had a horde of minotaurs knocking me prone all over the place; I could rarely be sure of wherever I was. It must have taken me an hour to finish that run.

Same here, and it seems to be getting worse by the day. In the Scorpion quest in the red fens the healing scorpions (I can't remember their names, I'm old, bugger off lol) stay burrowed under the ground, healing until they are out of mana / spell points. My hirelings do as you described. Half the time they don't follow, and when they do catch up they just stand around picking their underwear out of their collective butts. Same for my Doggo, but I don't think Hekubus wears undies. Ditto again with mobs (based on someone else's post), at LEAST half the time they simply stand there while I kill them (without the aid of my hirelings and dog, of course). When they ARE active, half of that time I'm unable to move and they beat me to death while my adoring fans (hirelings and doggo) watch.

"Are you not entertained??!!"

We have been investigating degraded game performance since the weekend and we are continuing to look at our options. Once we have something to announce we will, but we're looking at several possible culprits at the moment and discussing the best path forward.

Every time new content is added, the lag gets worse.
Its the second law of Thermodynamics. Entropy always increases as the system is getting more complex.

To reduce entropy we simplify the process and introduce order, cooling and condensation.

Maybe to reduce lag DDO needs to simplify the code and streamline the storage systems, reduce randomness, remove reaper trees, and remove the TRs and simplify the character's computation; or add up all TR information upon login and cache there. i.e. not dynamically computed.

Bigger 64 bits systems only let people to create more complexity and increase entropy if the code is not streamed down.

Maybe even reduce the level cap and get rid of ship buffs

that sounds like a weekend hardware failure...which would be unfortunate seeing as you guys are at the early stages of a transition to the new servers. Maybe you can hire hardware on a 12 month lease as an inbetween solution

Yeah, that too. Or we add the ship buffs number to our character sheet. The problem is timers though. There are too many timers on DDO. Elixirs have a timer, raids have a timer, chest ransack have timers, character buffs have timers, summons have timers, even quests have timers. On expiration launch this expiration_event_handler(...)

They're preparing to launch a new server not transition the existing servers to new hardware. The existing servers won't be getting upgraded or be moved to the new data center. The idea is that they will eventually enable full character transfers off of them for free to the new servers.
